You skipped over the Super Select II 4wd system, the biggest advantage of the Triton. Allowing 4wd on high traction surfaces is something the other mainstream utes can't do. It shines in this area.

@@williambuschmann6152 i beg to differ. i use mine a lot when it's raining hard and the roads are slick. i have tested it on wet city roads when i stand on the gas midway around a corner, being a rear wheel drive, the back comes out and i can drift the corner, in all wheel drive its very difficult to get the back out in the same conditions. makes a huge difference. and it is not "all time 4x4", you activate it when you want it.

2016 model, 140k - love it. Serviced every 10k, no rattles, no engine issues, a little road noise on ATs, great handling, awesome in soft sand, interior is always dusty, infotainment screen is not bright enough, piano black scratches real easy, love the full time 4wd, narrow body is awesome on tight bush tracks, seat covers for extra padding, window switch area gathers dirt, door seals a bit sticky, had loose door hinge bolts once, otherwise faultless. Great car

I’ve had my 2017 GLS from new, it now has nearly 100,000kms on the clock and has literally been everywhere in SE QLD including Fraser Island a few times. Absolutely zero issues. Had provent catch can from new, outback armour suspension, upgraded UCA’s, 265/70/17 Wildpeaks and some stainless bash plates. It goes everywhere. My only complaint is that it lacks that low down torque when towing the camper trailer. But, a decent tune will solve that and give it a bit extra oomph. I paid $37,500 for mine, had $55,000 to spend but honestly could not justify going for a Ranger or Hilux as there was literally zero difference, other than a rear locker. Cracking ute that I’ll keep until it dies!

Had my 2013 since new. 170000km's on the clock. To be honest I treat it like shit. Been everywhere, carried a lot...including tubs full of crusher dust and fill. Take it camping at great hidden away beach camps. These cars are great. Pretty stock except for bigger wheels and off road tyres. I've rusted out one ARB bull bar and replaced it but the triton is rock solid. It looks a bit rough but mechanically I have never had an issue with it. And I'm hard on cars. If it goes as good as it does after 10 years with me I'd buy one again tomorrow. Not that I will cause I'm not getting rid of this one. My wife keeps telling me to get a new dual cab. She has even released the funds but I'm not doing it. I'll keep this one. I did look at a 2022 model triton, even had 16k offered as a trade in on mine (crazy) but nope. Much cheaper to replace the engine and gearbox if they go, then spend 60k on a new car. And I love driving the triton. It is so comfortable. If....and when I do have to replace the old girl (ute. Not the wife.....well maybe...) I'll keep this one to do the work and take the dogs to the beach and I'll buy another triton hopefully. Just hoping the new 2023 onward models live up to the namesake.

As a MQ GLX Club Cab owner, I’m a big fan of these Tritons. Jack of all trades is a good description. Personally, the biggest shortcoming is a high (for a diesel) peak torque at 2500rpm. Can lag noticeably off the mark. Left foot brake (auto transmission), get revs over 1000, and the lag is gone. Realistically, that technique is very rarely needed. Point missed, which I didn’t know initially is the Triton DPF is in the engine bay, immediately behind the Turbo. This personally is a huge engineering win. It’s a high heat source (around 700 degrees C I believe when cleaning itself), that isn’t under the vehicle. The Triton has a shorter wheelbase than any other common dual cab, and an excellent turning circle. The trade off is the tow ball is further from the rear axle than any other Ute. This does affect towing stability, and many motoring journalists have quite rightly commented on this. Although rated to 3.1 tonne towing capacity, 2.5 tonne would be my limit. It’s comfortable, is quiet inside on the road, and has been totally reliable. Engine wise, I agree with the advice to fit a catch can.

I have had 4 tritons. My first was a 1980 single cab ute, then a 1990 dual cab ute , then into the 4wd versions an MN 2010 GLX , an now just bought a MR GSR. Overall, for reliability . As good as any. Price wise -excellent value. 4WD wise -I have been everywhere I have wanted to go - Simpson Desert, Beach Driving, mud, etc Comfort - great. Towing - no dramas, with boat, and camper 1200 kg. The MR is my first auto , smooth shifts. Lots more safety features Why spend 10 k more on a Ranger or Toyota when this excellent vehicle is an option? Not to mention the super select, brilliant! All wheel drive on the bitumen when weather is rubbish, much safer. So you get a great 4wd for at least 10k less than the most others-that’s a bull bar, suspension lift, tyres, tow bar, roof rack, canopy for the same price as a ranger or Toyota. No brainer!

Just got my 2018 GLX+ few weeks ago, after owning several Commodore Sports wagons. Loving it. Living in Adelaide hills I am surprised how much it loves been tossed in to the corner, and effortlessly pulls itself up the steepest incline. However thought it jittery as hell over bumps. Wacked a cheap set of drawers in the back (has a canopy) weighing 70kg and huge improvement. Seems to reduced is bouncing for want of a better word.

It now has 138k kilometers n has had little problems but nothing major. The paint us is little dull in one small spot on hood but I do not take good care of it because I cannot. It has 3.2 diesel engine n runs great n makes a 7 hour one way trip once a month back n forth up to the mountains n we live in middle of rice field so it stays dirty in rainy season. Love my truck n b4 I moved here from US I never bought n e thing else but toyotas. From supra to celica gts to extended cab 4x4 with sun roof (the nicest toyota I had) to tacoma then FJ n highlander. Things I look for in a car apart from safety is handling, braking distances in an emergency, driving lights at night is extremely important as I drive country roads. Comfort of seats as I do long drives. I can say I’ve driven the triton exceed with leather seats and it was by far the most uncomfortable seat I’ve ever sat on long distance. Any chance you will review a vw v6 amarok? Curious to find out about dpf issues if they are car or driver fault. Cheers

@@cheerscheers6042 Great suggestion but the only challenge with that is that we borrow these cars off friends and friends of friends so we only get limited time with the cars. Also, if it rains, we can't shoot the pieces to camera so we generally reschedule when it rains. However, I'll make a note to ask owners their impressions of how the cars handle in the wet. And 100% we will be shooting a V6 Amarok as soon as we can find one that fits what we need. We were offered one recently but it only had 30,000kms on it so not used enough to get a good idea of wear and tear over a longer period of time. Hopefully we'll find the right example to review soon mate. Great suggestions but!

Was after a new ute for a while. Could not justify the 70k price in nz for a new dmax xterrain. I stumbled across a gls recently 48000km for $42000 nzd I bought it because i wanted a basic 4x4. Dont regret it. Everything i want from a 4x4 and nothing i dont. Perfect. Super select 2 android auto nothing beeping at you everytime you drive it. Daily driving 600km a week more then comfortable on road with the occasional weekend light off roading. Absoloutely stoked and plenty of money left over for mods.

Have owned my MQ from new. This review confirms what I thought at purchase. A bargain, could not justify the extra 20k for a ranger/Amarok/Hilux. Great review. Have had no probs at all. Canopy fitted, roof racks(4) kayak carriers , rear draws and loads camping equip. I average 9.5L/100 , so pretty good considering. Agree the headlights are not as good as I thought they might be. Been driving manual recently for work, biggest issue is lack of bottom end torque there is nothing under 2000rpm. Keep changing up to 3rd around 30-35kmh then back to 2nd as there isn't anything there. Found 40mkh is about right for 3rd and never use 4th in 50kmhr zone. Drove Hilux 3.0T manual regularly few years ago and don't remember having these issue, just better spread of power. Once hit power band then plenty of getup and go. With auto probably wouldn't notice the narrow powerband.

Bought a 2016 gls with 37000km on it in march this year...... First 4x4.....I put 30000km on it in about 3 mths before we were imprisoned, at least 40% off road. I'm talking hard core off road for about half of that. Never had an issue mechanically. Once you learn how to use the super select, low range and centre diff lock, it will outclass most in the rough stuff. Tight turning circle, great visibility, lighter weight, good traction control to name a few. Whacked on muddies, up 2 sizes, decent bullbar, winch, sports bar and uhf radio.......haven't found a place I can't go yet, and I've managed to wander into a few that came close to triggering a change of undies. Departure angle sucks but I ditched the factory towbar for an aftermarket one.......as good as any stock I've seen, even many modded ones. Bigger tyres can give an inch lift anyway. Can't recommend them enough. For what I paid I have spent about 6k to virtually bulletproof it and its still cheaper than any stock competitor. Only problems off road is no rear diff lock, though technique and line selection can overcome most obstacles. Always amusing when the 70 grand raptor comes to a standstill.....I usually don't wave on the way past, was never one for rubbing it in. Great review by the way, subscribed.

I own a 2016 MQ GLS. Some of the autos have 3rd gear issues. There's a ticket with Mitsubishi which will replace (used to replace D-tent) the gearbox under warranty if the issue is confirmed, although not a recall. Squeaky suspension is another known issue which they'll replace under warranty too. Towbar wiring recall and the standard airbag recall that a lot of cars had. My little niggles are a wobbly passenger seat and slow Bluetooth connectivity comparatively speaking. Great ute and would consider the MR as my next vehicle.

2.5 4D56 turbo Diesel engine has a common over heating issue due to manufacturing defect. Mitsubishi didn’t recall all the triton and check and replace the engine block with the issue. What they did is a campaign to “cover it up” and delay the showing of the problem. I bought a 2nd hand mn triton(10yr old). And unluckily after 4 month the engine start over heating. I have an old 2005 triton Ute with 4g64 engine. Bought it at 10 year old with 150k on the clock. Now it is about 320k and 17 years old. It never missed a beat and other than normal wear and tear the engine is so reliable and that is why I trusted Mitsubishi and bought the mn triton. But it seems to me, Mitsubishi was doing the same thing as what takata air bag did by covering up the issue instead of correcting them properly. So if you are thinking of buying a second hand triton with 4d56 engine, be careful.

For future reference, off-road tyres will add an extra litre/hundred kays or two, and if the new tyres have a larger diameter (usually the case with most A/T or M/T tyres fitted to get the most benefit off-road), that increase will throw out the trip computer since it will be reading inaccurate distance measurements, to the detriment of the displayed figures. The only way to accurately measure fuel over distance is to get a GPS distance travelled from the last fill to the next fill. The fuel used over that distance will give you the accurate litres per km. The Triton really is underrated. It's the best trusted value proposition in that segment.

Re tyre radius, when I first purchased my 2018 MQ Exceed demo, with factory 17in alloys, It had the slowest speedometer of any car I had owned, when compared to my Garmin GPS. It was even slow at 60 kph ! The onboard calculated fuel burn was in the high 8's ( The vast majority of my usage is highway driving ) I put a set of Ballistic 20" alloys and a set of Monsta A/T's and the speedo immediately matched my GPS. The fuel burn now averages high 9's- low 10's, which I believe is accurate, and my odometer also matches my GPS.

I love them, my family have all got rangers and BT-50, you should have seen the look on there faces when I first came home in a Triton, they though I was out of my mind but after many years I think they have realized that they are actually brilliant cars but some are to stubborn to admit it lol with the MR we recently did a trip and I managed to get the average fuel down to 8.2L per 100 and about 890km range (I understand they're not 100% accurate) the top of my RTT was sitting slightly above the roof line and the roads were smooth with no wind hah so then I did believe it could have got down to 7.5L without the RTT but I do have a sixth gear haha

I'm in my 50's and have been driving Toyota Landcruisers my whole life. Bought a brand new Triton 8 years ago. Best truck I've ever had. The motor is bullet proof.. 215km on the clock & still goes like the clappers.. Toyota is over priced in my opinion - you're paying for the name - A name established by the old HJ47's (which I owned new in the early 80's).. Triton is establishing it's reputation right now - in another 20 years they'll probably be paying too much for them as well.. so I'll switch again - if I'm still around - he,he,he..

I have owned a 2018 blackline edition since new, I have to say it has served me well. Hasn't missed a beat, and yes while it is down a bit power compared to others (132kw) it is lighter, so that makes up for it in the bigger scheme of things, and you can always get it tuned for more poke. Also the backline comes with steering wheel shift paddles, that combined with rear diff lock makes for some fun driving.

@@ReDriven yeah got the ls m model massive wait on the xterrain, interior is very nice heaps of storage and the most cup holders I have ever seen lol. Drives nice like all the other 4x4’s but the main thing I have noticed is the torque at all rpms is great. Time will tell haven’t got enough kms on it yet or put it through any tough stuff. The driver lane assist is great saves fatigue on longer trips but does like to take you over the centre white line quite often

Thought the fuel economy was 7.6 not 7? Good review. More praise needed for Super Select II, one of few that offers 2H and 4H on any surface which is a safety feature and means its a true 4x4. Inferior massey ferguson systems like Isuzu can only use 4x4 H on virtually sand!

Yes you completely glossed over the single biggest advantage which is the full time 4WD mode super select II. Nothing is worse than trying to reverse a Ute on wet grass spinning and embarrassing itself, even driving in slippery wet conditions on bitumen the 4H mode works perfect with Lancer Evo levels of grip in the wet! It’s the Amarok that also offers full time 4WD.

I have a 2018 Blackline and to be honest, its been really good. I have modded it with canopy, bigger fuel tank, better tyres. I get around the 11-12 l/100. Brilliant on road, and although it hasn't been off road to much, it is extremely comfortable even on long trips which i have done plenty of thus the long range tank. I don't have a catch can, but it is serviced every 10,000kms and every service has seen a fit and healthy result. Personally, im very happy with it and would recommend it. No, it doesn't come with all the tech goodies that the MR has, but to be honest, im not interested in a car that has more bells going off every minutes anyways.

Good review, but i have a few niggles. Down on power? Pretty sure it has the fastest 0-100kmh time out of all utes from its generation. P-Drive TV showed this. G'Day Michael. Totally understandable niggles mate. I should have made it more clear mentioning the power. I meant when compared to other cars and SUVs so apologies for that. And yep, failed to mention how awesome Super Select 2 is. I even wrote it on the script but stuffed up on the day and missed that whole section of dialogue, again my apologies for that.
