This was a great video. I'm about to be working on the HP team at Geek Squad City and was researching common problems, and although we don't use pen torches, we still have to find the issues and this has helped tremendously. Well put together.

Just got off the phone with one of your employees (George) ,who was very friendly and helpful with questions I had on the DV6 procedure. Since I will be doing it myself, my only problem is determining how hot the chip will get when I heat it with the pen torch. Thanks for the help and the video! Wish me good luck!

I had this problem for a long time. I finally completely lost my screen two days ago. I also lost my DVD drive and my sound a long time ago, but didn't think it was related. Well, to my surprise I tried this repair last night and am now typing on the very computer that didn't work yesterday morning. I even recovered my sound and my DVD drive. I know this video is old, but thank you very much. I didn't want to buy a new laptop.

My HP dv9000 just went blank today with this exact problem. I found your solution to this problem immediately through a search. Great job! I had wondered if it was worth fixing, at the time it was brand new i spent approx $1100. I am glad to know that I now have an idea of the cost for repair. If I can find anyone in my area, I would be happy to ship it to you. Also thank you for the class action law suit against these laptops. thank you for your great professionalism, everyone here agrees!

Wow. You are a master. I am just a padawan. I've done my fair share of computer repairs and even changed a dc jack once so I am daring enough to try this. But if it fails I may need to send it to you guys for a chip replacement. Damn HP for making such a faulty design. And foolish people for not taking care of their laptops, putting them on beds, pillows, or leather sofas and not letting them breathe underneath.

Thank you so much. I had this problem in my HP dv9000 and I could fix it using your videos. The last week my laptop's screen showed coloured lines and after some seconds the computer rebooted itself. When I saw the GPU, there wasn't any thermal compound and the fan was very dirty. I resoldered the chip and I cleaned everything with a brush and I put "Artic Silver 5" (15€) between the chips and the copper bar. Now it works perfectly. I really appreciate your videos. Thanks from Spain.

Thanks for the complete explanation. This fix worked for with my DV9730. I had a different problem though in that the video portion worked, but the laptop wouldn't see my CD-ROM drive. This after hours and hours of all the fix attempts on-line and swapping out drives ultimately, this procedure resolved the problem. I also upgraded the heat sink, using a piece of copper conduit piece cut into quarters (about a postage stamp size) and used a mallet to flatten. This seems to have resolved the heavy fan usage, as I hardly hear it. Used thermal compound Arctic Silver AS5 from Radio Shack.

For over a year I walk through my work area, glance at it and mutter unmentionables. Have not been able to locate the proper "nerve" needed to dismantle the entire monster. I've built and refurbished dozens of desktops with every possible problem. But laptops....scare me. Anyway, that was highly enjoyable and informative. I would love to have had you as an instructor.

This can be fixed very easily - When you power on the laptop, shut the lid down quickly, and wait for the system to start. And there you go! You will have to do it every time you start the computer though, so I guess this solution is better in the long run. But thumbs this up so everyone can see! Worked for me on a dv6000.

AMAZING !!!!! We use German Infrared Top and Bottom heat for this process. I would say that this is a band-aid fix at best. We remove the BGA graphics chip and put new solder spheres under it. This process is called reballing. Its actually the only sure fire way of permanently repairing the no video issues with the DV series and other laptops. It would be the best investment for your company. In any event..... GOOD JOB WITH THE TORCH !!!!!

Followed your guide except with the torch. Had my HP DV9072ea in pieces after +2 hours. Added a flattened smooth penny from 1964 (wet sanded with a 1200 paper!). Added thermal paste both to the CPU and GPU. Thing would still not work. There are more than 60 screws that have to be removed! Thankfully most of them are either short silver ones or black ones. Anyway, the video was very helpful!

Thanks a billion for this video!! I used a Wagner heat gun on the lowest setting with an inferred laser gun to get it to the right temp. Tried the battery hookup to see if screen would work and it didn't. Well the laptop is 6 yrs old so I said what the heck and blasted it with heat again, applied thermal paste and some old pieces of copper, and it works now! BUT I have 9 screws that I can't figure out for the life of me where they fit, and I don't care. Use this more as a desktop anyway. Thanks!

Yea I used an actual digital 4 sided air tool from my work. Set it to 410f, just slowly rotated it around the graphics chip for about minute (I started while it was at about 350f, then after about 20 seconds it hit 410f steady), let it cool down and put on the custom copper heat sink. Took an hour and a half to complete the whole project with this video, once again thanks.

Pete...Just want to say THANKS SO MUCH!!! This video made my life MUCH easier!!! Got everything fixed, and I'm actually running about 30 degrees cooler now!!! I also replaced the fan and heat sink since I was in there! (to anyone doing this, on ebay, you can get a new fan and heat sink for $20 includes shipping, personally, I recommend just replacing the fan since your already this far into your system). Anyhow, THANKS again Pete!!!!

I performed this to clean out the fan heatsinks because the dust was causing overheating, the likely cause of the laptops problem in this video. This is not for most amateurs to attempt. I now simply use a good vacuum on the bottom of the laptop to suck the dust back out the fan hole. You may have to buy a can of compressed air and apply it to the side vent next to the fan hole while you simultaneously vacuum it out. Make sure you have updated the bios it really helps prevent shutdowns.

As far as I know, the effective performance of the laptop can not be judge now because the processors have not really been subjected to their normal working temperature. Unless this is done and the system sustained then we can conclude. But all the same, the guy did a great job worthy of commendation.

Thanks for the video. Never pulled apart a laptop before but managed just fine. You made reference to some of the ribbons/screws, but didn't exactly show all of them being taken out. Would have made it easier, but I was able to figure it out. Ended up baking the whole board at 375F for 10 minutes. Also used a '68 penny that I sanded smooth as a sink over the GPU to replace the little foam pad. Added a little high quality grease also. Put it all back together and worked perfectly.

Hi, glad you enjoyed the video. As for the blinking lights on the TX2500, if your system has an ATI Chip Set, more than likely this could be an indication that a Reflow is needed. Taking into consideration that you have already Reflowed the GPU, I would recommend you try to replace your CPU instead or try playing around with your RAM, 1 by 1 in different slots, which could also be the problem. Let us know, how this works for you, best of luck -Anibal.

Unfortunately, yes, this could happen again in the future as there is no permanent fix for this issue. How long would fix last, really depends on how well you Reflowed your system, as well; your usage.

Yes there is. You would rather use a Heat Gun, preferably one that allows for you to monitor or control temps being applied. If the heat gun is measuring in Celsius, you should max out at 210. That would be your flow point. Hope this info helps

Great video, I've completed all of the elements contained within this video, when I've tried to test the video chip I only receive a temporary blue start up light for a few seconds. Any idea why I haven't received a permanent blue light as per your video? Thanks in advance Mitch

I just did this fix and I have a suggestion for those of you who do not own a torch. What you can do is set up the motherboard so it is connected to power (like he does when he tests, but do NOT plug in the screen and unplug power to the fan). If you turn it on, you will notice that the blue lights will come on and the GPU will begin to heat up. If you use a hair dryer on high heat and blow it onto the GPU, then it acts the same as a torch. I would strongly recommend using a torch though.

Back again, I'm typing on my dv9000! Thanks for the video, the $5 pencil torches from amazon I used were really bad but after enough heat/cool applications it seems to have done the trick. Now If I can only figure out where these eight extra screws go.. hmmm

Very Professional Great post How does head up the chip fix it does it re solder to the board. I heard this term before called chip creep. Where solder parts become disconnected. Working on my A+ and almost have it. Don't have that much experience with laptops. They look like a nightmare with all the parts. Great Job!!!!!

Reheating the Chip, allows for Solder points underneath to melt and once you are done heating it, during the cooling process it re-seats itself correctly. Hope this helps -Anibal
