When writing songs at home, I generally record vocals last and my SM7B is very low in volume when recording so I can't hear anything for monitoring during recording.. I'm glad I've found your video. I just got my UR-RT2 yesterday and suddenly I remembered why I have never used Cubase with my previous audio interface (I used Garage Band instead...). Thanks to your video, I figured out the monitoring with reverb (but damn was it difficult to figure out how to change the reverb type from hall to room : clicking on the bargraph below? Why not simply do it from the Reverb effect window once it's displayed with the "e" button?). Next thing I struggled with was being able to select a guitar amp for monitoring after I had played with the mic strip channel... Jeez!! If you already set your mic channel for monitoring with DSP effects, you must deactivate it (with that tiny 3 position toggle) to be able to select an amp for your other input (otherwise, only "strip" will be selectable). As I'm now having my DAW on Windows, I'll try to spend more time getting used to Cubase but if it still sucks next week, I'll likely to try out another DAW...

Most likely something to do with your audio connections. Open up Studio Setup and select Audio Connections from the menu. Then make sure the correct connections are made.

Recently discovered your channel and watching a lot of videos - great content, thank you! Two questions about this and the UR242 (that you covered in another video) 1) In the view at 8:37 you have the DSPMixFX in the HARDWARE rack of the Mix Console. I have this but I have no other options when I click ChStrp - i.e. I can't load any of the Guitar Amp FX. When I run DSPMixFX in standalone the Guitar Amp FX are there and all works fine. Any idea what I might be doing wrong? 2) Can the UR242 be used to have a separate Headphone or Cue Mix (ideally to come out the Phones) than the Main Mix? (would love to not have to keep changing volume on my hardware whenever I want to check stuff on my monitors vs. tracking via my headphones.

Hope you don't mind me asking, as I'm getting Nowhere fast with Steinberg. When I launch Cubase pro 12, it's absolutely fine. As soon as I switch on my UR816C, I get the spinning Wheel of Death. But interestingly, it works fine when using Logic albeit on ly one Headphone socket works. Any suggestions, would be really appreciated. I've done all the usual, like Uninstall everything and then install ensuring the my Licenser etc is all up to date, latest drivers and is compatible with my Mac M1 Mini and Monterey.

Hi Chris top-shelf video again. I have the ur824 and Cubase 9. where I run into issues is when I use my ipad to control my cue mixes when Im in the drum room. It never seems to be consistent with controlling reverb. I would really appreciate a video on direct monitoring with dspMixFx using cues mixes and iPad. Go between the 4 Auto-Monitoring modes found in Preferences...VST...Auto-Monitoring is setup to Manual by default, the one I use when recording is Tape Machine Style. I actually created myself a shortcut to switch between those 4 modes.

UR44: I thought I'd asked this question and you replied(?)... I can't find it here so... I understood your DSP info but you didn't mention the two H/phone ins and how to configure them. I think that we need to add an Audio (aux?) track (mon) to hear the mic/vocals in 'Mix 1' and also send all the other music tracks to an Audio/aux/group track so one can balance/blend/mix vocals and 'backing tracks'. Otherwise, only one H/phone can be used. (I loved my old UR22 which had a one-knob 'blender/mixer' but only one H/phone in.. Sorry if I am repeating this question but I cannot find, anywhere, how to do this and even a (dumb?) Steinberg customer service guy told me to send back my UR44 because it doesn't do what Steinberg/Yamaha says it will!!!! Thanks for all the other tips and tutorials; they're much appreciated. (-:

@@mixdownonline Hi! Chris, Thank you for making time to respond to this. Just so you know what my challenges are: Firstly set up: 1. UR 44 C 2. Cubase 10.5 on Widows 10. 3. 1 mic on Input 1. 4. Under Audio Connections: 4.1 Control Room: I have deactivated "Exclusive Output" under preferences of Cubase which means Output 1L and 1R are doubled. I put first set of Output 1L and 1R under Output tab (to enable appearance of the DSP panel on the inspector) and I put another set of Output 1L and 1R under Control Room, "Monitors 1" which serves Monitors. 4.2. Inputs Tab: Stereo Left buss, Mono buss and Stereo Right busses set. They all use Input 1. Problem: Stereo Right audio tracks do not show the DSP panel on the inspector. The DSP panel on the inspector only shows on Stereo Left, and Mono audio tracks. This means I cannot record fx on tracks that use Stereo Right. Second Problem: Control Room: the button for "Main" does not switch off when I want to record in the same room. I am forced to lower the volume dial on the UR 44 C when I record, to avoid feedback. With my previous interface, I could simply switch off "Main" on Cubase and the Monitors would be off without having to touch the Audio Interface. The reason I deactivated "Exclusive Output" under preferences of Cubase is because Output 1L and 1R are doubled wrong it is deactivated. I put first set of Output 1L and 1R under Output tab (to enable appearance of the DSP panel on the inspector) and I put another set of Output 1L and 1R under Control Room, "Monitors 1". This is the reason why the "Main" button on Cubase does not switch off. Output 2L and 2R are on "Phones" under Control Room. This serves for singer to hear monitor herself when singing. Headphone Amplifier is connected to Output 2L and 2R for the singer.

You mean having access to direct monitoring from the Hardware tab in Cubase? If so, this option work with the dspMixFx only. When I work on my Lynx Aurora16, I use the Lynx Mixer to manage monitor mixes.

As always great tutorial Chris!... Thanks for it. I have the Steinberg UR824 interface which has the similar routines as the ones shown in your video. I always use the dspMix F and also the various settings when recording. One question : in the effects I use the engineers settings with a variety of options; eg AK Bass, MZ A.guitar, MR vocal, SH vocal, OK Master, IO drums, TK and ZK settings. Any idea what these abbreviations mean: AK, MR, MZ, OK, TK, ZK, IO?... I have no idea. Thanks for your feedback Chris!

The Hardware Tab is the old system, with your UR816C you will get a TAB to control the input of your interface on the left zone when an Audio Track is selected and Routed to an Input of your Interface. On my side, the Tab will named AXR4T since the AXR4T is my Interface. Way better than the Harsware Tab ;)

Hey mate -- cheers for this. What can you do if even after following your steps the hardware option doesn't show up in the rack drop down? I am using the UR824 (with latest tools and driver) and Cubase Elements10.5 and it doesn't want to integrate and give me the hardware option. The dspMixFX app is always running the show and is never deactivated by Cubase. I have access to all the VST versions of the plugins in Cubase but it's not using the DSP versions (except when I assign them as inserts via the MixFX app).

That never happened on my side. I would uninstall all dspMixFx drivers and re-install them and see what happens. If that doesn't work, call Steinberg Support.

Hello, Chris: with this card or, for example, the UR-44C, is it possible to have the direct monitoring in other physical outputs, for example 3 and 4? In this case, where in the card software is that adjusted? For example, I could have output 3 and 4 with a cue mix and wanted to mix that with direct monitoring for someone that is singing. I ask that because in my card I can have direct monitoring only in the main outputs and headphones, but direct signal is not present in outputs 1-2 and 3-4. Outputs 1-2 are almost a replica of main outputs, but only the lasts can have direct signal too (there is a mix knob that allows to mix DAW+direct, but this only works for main outputs, the 3-4 get only DAW signal).

I am a happy urrt2 user but i currently have a problem that i can't solve alone : i use the entry number 3 (one of the line input on the back ok the interface) for a Yamaha vl-70m synth connected to a wx5 wind controller. Lately i lost a lot of output (about 50%) level while i was turning the morph button in the channel strip plugin. I was very surprised because it worked perfectly before. But now i can't get the right monitoring (and recording) level... It remains very low. I tried to uninstall and reinstall all the tools for ur-rt2 but it didn't change anything. If it want to record drums and use my UR824 DSP for my cue mix (EQ etc) AND, simultaneously, have my guitarist plug in his guitar into my interface and use a VST amp sim to hear him, this is impossible in Cubase, right? Because I have to enable direct monitoring which.. well, it skips vst-effects when monitoring a track. The DSP amp sims are really not good enough. I had no problem with a cheap behringer mixer with combining onboard dsp monitoring AND vst effects. Do I have to go back to the behringer?

Interesting! I have DSP on my Focusrite interface but never felt the same presence using their included reverb as I do using VST FX inside Cubase to monitor myself while tracking. If my PC is fast enough to give me live VST effects while tracking (with super low latency), is there any other reason I'd want to use the DSP ones and get absolute zero latency?

I think the main reason to use this (apart from sweetening with the reverb) for me is the built in latency free compression on the channel strip - it really helps me with my singer as he will always hear himself loud and proud no matter how far I am into the mix and how many compression plugins I have added to the various channels / group channels / master fader. It's also nice to use Cue Mix on the subgroups to give the singer whatever he needs without affecting the master mix balance. With Control Room you can check his mix on your own headphones - the UR824 supports up to 4 different cue mixes.

I am not sure about your Focusrite - I guess it depends on how you set up the mixer application. As Chris demonstrated with the Steinberg UR interface it is actually integrated in the hardware strip and you get a choice of insert or cue mix. I think for tracking 2:1 compression is probably good but it obviously depends on the kind of compression; personally I wouldn't print the compression [by default I bet it is only a live setting, so you do not go through your channel and potentially other compression plugins which may introduce more latency - it works best when applied to the cue / direct monitoring shown at 6:10 - which means your voice comes directly from the interface not from Cubase] in case I can come up with something better (I have a ton of compression plugins) - just dial it up however your singer feels comfortable and take a note of the settings?

Other daws, such as reaper, don't work the same as cubase does in the way it handles direct monitoring, hence trying the same in reaper is really not working in my case :( do you know a solution to this? Thanks for this Chris, I have a UR824 for a few years now with Win10 and cubase10.5 now and the dspFX work great. BUT - I would LOVE to be able to monitor with minimal latency while using a better gtr plugin (neural dsp, TSE, etc...) and even at minimum buffer settings I find the latency unusable... but I see people using this type of plugin on KZbin all the time but without the latency...any suggestions?

The people you see on KZbin will have latency but it will be very low. You have to make sure thst your buffer size is low to get lower latency when monitoring with plugins from a DAW. But lower latency will be harder on your computer. Do on Studio Setup, slect your sounf interface, click on Control Panel and bring your Buffer size to 128 or less. Experiment with this :-)

For the UR44C, it's not the same dspMixFx shown in this video, the new version is way better so lucky you ;) If you installed all drivers and software from Steinberg you should have the dspMix fx installed as well. Click on the Strat menu and Search for dspMixFx and you will find it

Tried this but didn't work! Running the UR44 but so far it's not cooperating at all. Done this stuff for decades but it's very unstable. No audio inputs work when Cubase 12 comes up & it shuts down the Inputs from the UR44. I got it going with the Deluge ONCE but now the Electribe2 isn't even syncing via midi out. Might just go back to Akai - think the UR44 is just too old for Cubase 12. But interesting clip. Have it working before but still won't cooperate now. Followed the instructions EXACTLY. Not sure what's going on. DSP mix works fine but craps out. Audio out is great with KZbin & VSTs but not line in. Will figure it out - eventually! Might go back to Ableton Live for software mixing if version 11 reads Jbridger for 32 bit plugins.

Nice, but I got a little lost once you got to the routing. You have a stereo in channel with no hardware control up top, how come? and the mono-in 1 seems to be automatically routed to the audio-1 channel, or did you do that beforehand? When you demonstrated making sure the mon button is activated, I don’t see how the signal gets to audio 1 when there is no signal showing..? I’ve used Cubase and have recorded several songs by trial and error on this section, but this routing part still throws me. Thanks

The reason why I have 1 hardware is because my stereo bus input is using the same input (1) as my mono input and you will get one Hardware per physical input. The Hardware is made to monitor what's coming out of your sound interface inputs. Basically, the Hardware is the equivalent of a channel we see in the Mixer version of the dspMixFx. So if you have a 2 channel interface, you will have a max of 2 hardware instance in Cubase. Hope that helps!

Hardware will not be listed under "Racks". It will only show up when an input is created and will show on the "Input" Channel section of the Mix Console. BUT you have the New UR44C, I don't know this one, but from what you're telling me, the UR44C you see in the Inspector will do the same job as it did before with "Hardware". It's the new way Steinberg works with DSPMixFX on the newser interfaces. Works this ways as well with my new AXR4. Do forget about the Hardware Tab and use the UR44C Tab insted. Hope that helps!

You need create mono bus input. Guitar amps dont work if you have stereo bus.

@@mixdownonline Thanks to your video plus knowledge of the sampling rate limitation, I was able to use the DSP channel strip for the first time. I'm new at this stuff. So, please pardon me if you and your followers are already aware. The reverb doesn't seem to be restricted to lower sampling rates. Hopefully this information will save people from some grief. Ideally, customers would be made aware of this issue prior to purchasing the interface. Yet, there is no information about this limitation on the product packaging. Additionally, "MIC/LINE" combo inputs 1 and 2 cannot be used with balanced 1/4" plugs. With the UR-RT4, the same is true but the additional combo mic inputs *can* accommodate balanced TRS cables. The RT2 product packaging is not clear about this limitation either. If one hopes to use the Neve transformers in conjunction with a 1/4" TRS balanced output pre-amp, I don't see how it's possible with the UR-RT2 and, in my case, non-balanced cables are too noisy. Line inputs 3 and 4 on the back of the UR-RT2 *are* for balanced 1/4" TRS inputs but using the Neve transformers with those inputs does not appear to be possible. Selling a 192kHz interface and expecting customers to only use it at 96kHz or lower is not reasonable. I will say one thing nice which is, the "Yamaha Steinberg USB Driver V1.10.3" release notes include the statement, "Added a selection of 32 samples to the buffer size setting of the ASIO driver".

From what I remember, when you record with Compression from the DSPmixFx, even if you use Reverb, the Reverb will not be recorded cause it's a Send FX if I remember correctly
