Hi Karen - you're so awesome, thanks for all your great videos. Question: if I am going to resin a large wood canvas board with just magazine clippings glued to it (I painted the wood white first), what do you recommend to seal it before doing the resin? I know some sealants can make the magazine translucent and don't want to see through to the other side. Also (bonus question!), do you think the resin process is easy enough, or should I hire someone to do it? Thank you, thank you, thank you!

Hi Karen, My question is regarding the Kamar spray varnish. I use it on alcohol inks as I thought that is the only varnish that won’t interact with them. I add alcohol to the inks though. (Ie: Rangers). I am using the back side of photo paper or yupo . I see you were using inks for your vases. Have you heard about using kamar for alcohol inks as the only varnish? . Thanks for sharing all of your knowledge!

Interesting, so if I use a glue like sealant such as Mod Podge or Weldbond, then I need to spray with something else to make the sealant not be sticky? Also, wouldn't a sealant with gloss/sheen make it difficult to photograph the painting or drawing after the sealant has been applied? Can you use the Liquetex matte medium as the final layer for a painting that you don't want to have any gloss or shine?
@KarenCampbellArtist3 жыл бұрын
Interestingly on the back of all acrylic mediums (like matte medium) it specifically says “not designed for final coat” so if you’re worried about photographing, just snap a pic before the varnish layer it grab a matte finisher instead - there are plenty to choose from on the market!
@cynthiasaulter88234 жыл бұрын
Golden Matte Medium is stupendous to work with. As a sealer through out your work process and a final sealer, I use 3 coats. Love your processes. You have some very beautiful work! So glad I watched this I dislike Mod Podge but may give it another try, I also feel I need to start a fresh page from the bottom up and see how I feel when it is finished thanks Karen this was very interesting and educational. I have never seal my pages before, but I have used Daddy Van Furniture Wax on each page to stop the pages from sticking to each other up to this point in time I have yet to have any problems with it. I have not used it on my canvases, I have use that toxic spray have to agree with you that stuff is gross, hence thinking the Mod Podge may be the better choice.

Great demo and review. Love your art style. My understanding is that Krylon Kamar Varnish is only for the final (layer 7) step to seal finished product (and yes it is very stinky). I would use Krylon Workable Fixative spray for sealing interim layers. I do some alcohol ink or pastel projects. So, for layer 7, I would use a 2 step process: Step 1: Varnish Protective Finish using Krylon Kamar (fixes medium so that it doesn’t smear or move when applying other products), then Step 2: Final Sealant Finish such as Krylon Satin or Matte Finish or Krylon Triple Thick Clear Glaze, or Krylon UV Resistant Clear if going to be exposed to sun.

Have you ever tried Ranger's Multi Medium Matte? Don't think it comes in a size larger than 3.8 oz and is expensive for the amount you get; anywhere between $7 and $9 for only 3.8 oz. How would I seal the edges of paper collage that I have put on top of a watercolour painting? I know how to seal watercolour and I have often put final finish or even liquid glass over paper collage. Would I use one medium for the collage which is quite a big spread of semi Abstract Flowers and a watercolour finish for the table that the bars and flowers are on and the wall behind it and the windows behind it. I want to give the watercolour part a shine and I Do you have the varnish for the watercolour but I am wondering about a painting that also includes collage that is sticking up a bit here and there. Thanks.

Great video. Bookmarked. Question: Can you use water color ground between layers and/or as a sealer?
@KarenCampbellArtist4 жыл бұрын
Thanks! Technically yes, but remember that watercolor ground isn't clear, so you'll be covering up your ENTIRE layer with a semi-transparent white film, which, if it's cool with you, is cool with me! If you're following along with my whole "hamburger process" then you really will want to reach for a sealant on the last layer (watercolor ground is like gesso, typically the FIRST layer of any project as it's surface prep). So that may be awesome for your first round of sealant, you probably won't want that for your last layer (see page 2 of the PDF, here is the link, you'll want to download this when you watch Episode 5 of this series awesomeartschool.lpages.co/mm-supplies/) or you'll just be covering over everything. I hope that makes sense! Feel free to ask any more questions!

I'm not a huge Mod Podge fan myself and I don't always have the budget for Liquitex & Golden (love those products) so the Wellbond is something I'll definitely try. I want to thank you so much for making these confusing options accessible to a novice lilke me. I been learning as I go, first using Liquitex gloss medium and varnish to glue down my paper which worked well but from your video I could use just gloss medium without the varnish. I ran out of that and had some Liquitex matte medium, which didn't seem to give as strong a seal between canvas and paper. Also, when I tried pen and ink (pigma micron archival ink) on top of the matte medium it didn't stick. Is there a better medium to use if I want to use pen and ink on top of it? I also found in my stash some "Joe's primer really good binder medium," but I'm not sure how to use it. It says on the container, "water based acrylic emulsion used to seal most surfaces in preparation for painting. Use between paint surfaces as a barrier coat." Which is a puzzle. I didn't know I needed to seal a surface before painting or use between surfaces. So much to learn, so little time. I am now going to go look at your whole series.
@KarenCampbellArtist4 жыл бұрын
Glad the series is helpful!! It sounds like the Joe's primer is equivalent to Gesso. You do need to Gesso some surfaces like if your painting in an altered book, you need to Gesso (or prep) those pages first. I made an entire art journal out of cereal boxes and all those cardboard sheets needed Gesso to begin as well. So that's the prep part! As far as writing over Matter Medium, reach for a water based paint pen (Uni Posca and Sharpie and Arteza make good ones) and yes, definitely watch the series, it will be helpful for a lot of product information! But.... forgive me for asking...couldn’t you use nasty Kamar varnish on pieces you DONT want activated again? People have so much difficulty sealing their gelatos & some have had difficulty w their Stabilos reactivating and spreading more than they’d like? I’m a rookie w all the new mediums, gel gloss medium, liquid gloss medium... etc. I’ve used heavy gel gloss medium to add body to my acrylics and seal gelatos.... but it takes a lot to seal a gelato piece. I’m just curious about the nasty 🤢 kumar... would it work?
@KarenCampbellArtist4 жыл бұрын
No it's totally a fair question. The answer is yes!! You can BUT....IT'S SO NASTY!! It's also a FINAL/FINISHING layer rathan a sealant. A sealant is something that STILL needs a varnish on TOP of (see next 2 last video in the series here: kzbin.info/www/bejne/qpW5doxur86mo9k) and I didn't do a great job of explaining that when talking the Kamar. There ARE, however, many NON nasty spray sealants that you can use to seal gelatos in addition to the ones I already mention here if you don't like to use a brush on one (and yes, all of the brush on ones in this video WILL work to seal gelatos), and include the Mod Podge Spray Sealer and the Acrylic Spray Sealer I regularly use by Deco ARts/Americana (both of which can ALSO be used as a finisher.). Confused?! I know! I'm so sorry!! Bottom line is that there are a LOT of options and a LOT of options that are fabulous and NOT at all nasty like the Kamar. When you watch that other finishers video I linked above (this one: kzbin.info/www/bejne/qpW5doxur86mo9k) hopefully the pieces will start falling into place!! I appreciate all questions and never mind taking the time to answer so please, always feel free to follow up and fire away!! I'm here for ya!!!!

So I am a total newbie at drawing and finally started my first art journal. And tried this hamburger system and after the modpodge layer I tried to use my tombo markers on my face to make my girl not so green looking and found they kept beading up what am I doing wrong?
@KarenCampbellArtist4 жыл бұрын
Hi Angela!! So Tombow markers are dye-based ink and they aren't opaque enough to "sit" on the plasticy mod podge layer. If you love Tombows (and I do too!) just don't use the Mod Podge layer and you should be good to go! If you LIKE how the Mod Podge works with the layers underneath, use paint pens like Posca Pens or Pitt Pens over the Mod Podge and you'll be set!! The inks are permanant and opaque so work totally differently :) Hope that helps!

HelloCaptainBlingBling never heard of them, okay. So basically I don’t use watercolors in the Hamburger system. But there are loads of ways to do mixed media, the Hamburger system is just my favorite way! When I use watercolors I use them alone and then layer on top of them inks, pen and pastels. But they don’t work on top of acrylics because they need an absorbent base to soak into and acrylics dry to a hard, non porous, plastic surface, that’s why you can use them over acrylic paints. I don’t know if poster colors are acrylic, water or oil based, but watercolors like to be the base layer and really only mix in a limited layering situation. Hope that helps!
@DazzlingStar074 жыл бұрын
@@KarenCampbellArtist poster colors are water soluble. Do try your hand on those if you get a chance. Also, the reason why i got into mixed media is because of water spray paints. But your first hamburger video says no no! But i still wanna use them in my art work. So if I'm not wrong the spray colors are going to go on the crayon stage right? Btw, I can't believe you have been replying me so quickly. Thank your so much. Really appreciate it.

HelloCaptainBlingBling I’m happy to help!!! No you can totally use them with your watercolors in your mixed media projects. Again, the Hamburger system is just one of very many ways to make mixed media art! With watersoluble materials you’ll just be building a different kind of sandwich!! That’s all!! Couple them with inks and watercolors all day long! You won’t seal them because they’ll smear like crazy so again, you’re working outside of the Hamburger system, which is fine!!
