In this video I begin the process of finishing Project MIXED UP BOSS, The time has come to finally assemble the BOSS 429 style headed Ford 429" Stroker Windsor!
Using the great cylinder heads from Hammerhead Performance Engines (Greg Brown) I set out on a journey to build a 750hp pump gas engine for my truck that we call CASPER a 1971 F100 follow along on the build as we will be running this engine on the DYNO once finished and then install it into CASPER to make it a complete old school fire breathing machine....

I was a little surprised to see the stock style oil pump instead of a Kaase improved pump. Going on appearances the Kaase looks stronger, but that ain’t the whole story. Could you shed light on it Andy? Good video thank you.
@UnityMotorSportsGarage
@UnityMotorSportsGarage 3 жыл бұрын
David, the Kasse pump is for a BBF, this being a Windsor based build... I've never seen the SBF having the breaking foot problems that the 385 series has.. but that is not to say it hasn't happened... I would prefer a pump such as Kasse deal really... But I haven't found it necessary on small blocks as of yet... Andy

Yes sir, the bolts will $20 ya to death, if not $50 ya to death! LOL I like that oil pan and I was thinking it had a $500 price tag. When I rebuilt the engine in my '88 Crown Vic, it was the sensors and little things that I had to replace that got to be expensive.
@UnityMotorSportsGarage

BOLTS will nickel and dime you to death!... The oil pan is a big step up from what was on the old 393w.. You are right, on a FI car the sensors and other odd and ends add up quick! Andy
@bigbear5510
@bigbear5510 3 жыл бұрын
@@UnityMotorSportsGarage They sure do! My '88 is a 2 barrel carb not FI. Water temp sensor was like $95, spark knock sensor $65, etc. Some of the others would be difficult to replace with the engine in the car so I put new ones while it was out of the car. I think the oil pressure switch was the most reasonable priced of them all. I think I have a broke flex plate, I should have replaced that too. When I redo the engine, I plan on doing a stroker kit, 750 cfm carb, truck headers, do a little more porting on the bowls and get rid of most of them sensors. I would like to do a 5 speed trans. but may just go with a C4 to get it running. I'm looking for the pedals and whatever extras I may need to convert it to manual, a F-150 should get me the parts I need. May be a few years before I take on that project, I need to get the trans in my '99 rebuilt first.

This build was completely amazing what a awesome job Andy. I always wanted to build a Ford 6 cylinder use a 240 crank and Rod a 300 block with a set of 302 Pistons. @@UnityMotorSportsGarage non overdrive transmission doesn't help your highway mpg... Though the best mpg I ever got in my old Subaru was when I set the cruise at 3500rpm. This was in the hills of southern Oregon, I needed that much torque to get over the hills without losing speed. In 4th, that was about 60 and I was having semis crawl up my tailpipe. In 5th, that was 82 or so. 33mpg, when going slower normally got me about 28! 🤯 After that, I did experiment with running the car closer to the 4400rpm torque peak, where you normally get best fuel economy, but anything over 3500rpm and I'd really lose mpg. Fuel injection car, but I think it was the equivalent of the secondaries or power enrichment valve opening up.

That pan is kind of like the best of many worlds considering it has a rear pickup, full length sump and fits in your front sump application. There ain't many stock chassis that one like that will fit on. I can see it doing an awesome job of oil control compared to any stock ford pan due to the fact that it keeps all the oil in the bottom well away from the rotating assembly. It ought to do a great job limiting slosh to the rear of the crank compared to the stock front sump. A lot of ford people overlook the issues associated with a stock type front sump in a drag application. Some times I wonder if a lot of engine failures especially on Clevelands and 385s were caused more by the front sump pan than by oil galley deficiencies. (especially clevelands being revved high) Great content as usual, Thanks and keep it coming.

Thanks for the kind words.. you are on to something with what you are saying... On CASPER with the stock replacement pan . I mounted my camera so I could see the oil pressure gauge at the track so I could watch for fluctuations and on the launch it would dip for a split second! Then come back... I tried putting more oil in the pan and it helped on the launch but on the top end it would dip because the extra oil was being whipped into foam! I found a compromise where it seemed to be best .. lesson was.. it showed the value of having a good oil pan with a rear mounted pickup on a Ford! Thanks for Watching! Andy
