This guy's approach is so different to what most of heavy music producers do. Glad to see that less sterile approach can still work well in today's music. Turns out the best thing you can do sometimes is just trust your ears to guide you.

I just love the aggressive simplicity of his mixing-approach. Boosting every frequency by 12 dB? No problem. Want some nasty frequencies? Let's go bonkers with everything above 1 kHz. Hilarious. I love it. (So different from everything I've ever seen in any tutorial)

I did the same thing-sent the guitars through Fortin, but then through Libra(using IRs dialed into Behemoth, Amon Amarth, Decapitated, Dying Fetus and others)and the guitar sound turned out amazing.

i love how Josh went several lengths to get that "crappy" Black Metal tone, but hey better have your sound good from the get go than having to fix a bad one.

Very cool that this is out on the internets. It's also kinda hilarious how Josh doesn't remember doing a lotta this stuff! A legendary, groundbreaking mix and the cook was so flowin' he didn't remember the spices he threw in...\m/

@dillpereira250 Жыл бұрын
digital clipping could be cool in this kind of sound. You lose information from the original audio but you gain volume and aggressiveness. This kind of sound is not meant to sound pretty. Clipping your channels is like using a hard clipping plugin but in a extreme way.

I can't figure the routing he's doing with the Fortin. I can't tell if he's running copies kemper gtrs into the Fortin or the DIs.
@BrofUJu2 жыл бұрын
I think they're the Kemper into the Fortin lol and then heavily EQed. Which is why it's so absurdly gainy
@craigpaulson35032 жыл бұрын
I somewhat did the same thing. I ran the already distorted guitar tracks through Fortin(I tried Sigma and a few others, but Fortin handled it the best) and then ran it through Libra-using impulse responses from Dying Fetus, Cattle Decapitation, Decapitated, Waking the Cadaver, and a few others. I experimented with this method before with awful results, but decided to give it another shot...glad I did. The results were amazing.

The standard setting of Reaper is to process tracks at 32 bit float. In doing so, you have almost infinite amounts of headroom. When your channel meter reads + 20 db overshoot and lets say you buss it into a groupbuss, you can simply turn down that group buss by 20 db and the signal is losslessly restored. The youtube channel Soundspeed did an excellent explanation on how 32 bit float works on a technical/mathematical level.

What is a 6505 mesa combo? Lol
@darkboxstudio36352 жыл бұрын
I think he just means peavey 6505 amp into a mesa oversized cab. That's just a classic combination that works for recording heavy guitars.
@Rex-sf8qj2 жыл бұрын
It’s a peavey 6505 amp (basically a 5150) and a mesa oversized cab (normally loaded with celestino vintage 30’s), which is a really standard combination of amp and cab for heavy metal tones

Wow, subtle use of noise gate on his voiceover 😆 Interesting video from an engineering perspective, but it perfectly illustrates why I hate deathcore and most modern metal. More of an sound production/engineering project than a musical project. Style over substance. Yeah, I am a boomer. Sue me 😉

Dont hate the process if it works and sounds good. This is still a song written by a band with emotional intent thats connected with a lot of people as clearly stated with how theyve blown up from this song. So clearly a lot of people dont hear it as just a production project
