One of the best on youtube. Made songs to your beats many many many years ago when I just began rapping. What's your thoughts on breath's on vocals? Do you always cut them out or just gate them or lower them manually? It sounds very clean without but sometimes it takes away the natural feel, at least for me. How do you go about this?
@SeanDivine4 жыл бұрын
it depends on the vocal. If the breaths are excessively loud or distracting, I will ride them and/or mute some of them. If they feel right with the performance, I leave them as-is
@80sfan614 жыл бұрын
Create a track called "Breathes" or something, cut out all breathes and put them on this track. Do this before applying any processing. Leave the breathes as they are, in my experience the original loudness of the breathes is fine most of the time. This may vary, but a good vocal-performer will put as much emphasis on the breath, as it is required, it's just natural. If some pop out and are distracting, you should ride them via clip-gain or automation (no compression), or you can lower the volume of the whole Breathe-Track. Might want to add the High-Pass-Filter that you put on your Lead to the breathes. The reason why you would not process the breathes is that they add a natural touch to the vocal. If they are natural it is all fine and also it underlines the illusion, that the processed vocal is actually the real vocal. Most of the time leave all the breathes in, if the vocal leaves the room for breathes. I'm thinking about rappers that don't leave that room and spit syllable after syllable, cutting after every line and not having a second without vocal. This might be a situation, where you want to get rid of most of the breathes, cause they interfere with the vocal. TL;DR: leave breathes as they are and don't cut them completely, if they are part of the performance. Put them on a seperate track, so they don't get your vocal-chain-processing. If you are unsure, if you should leave a breath or not, just AB-test with/without the vocal and you will know immediately. Don't forget fades at the clips' start and end, if you put your breathes on a seperate track!

@flamersss2 жыл бұрын
Yo sean, just got the SSL 2 today and l really like how it sounds. Quick question. I have a AKGP120 mic (pretty cheap mic) but it sounds good. Would you still record with the 4K Mode on and add that X Saturator if you were working with a budget mic like this? is it overkill for the mic? Or would you just use the plug-in?
@SeanDivine2 жыл бұрын
No rules, if it sounds better with both use them. The 4K mode does add some character to the top end that can make some mics more harsh.
