This video was extremely helpful and a very easy follow-along. For those who comp by splitting all of the takes by the same region instead of taking bits and pieces from each one the way that she did and struggle with getting all the comps from a puzzle to a full take. I finally figured out how to do it! You have to left-click, drag the blue box over the entire take you want to make into one (the top row with all the take splits), click the folder pop-up menu on any of the takes (2nd button on the take - the same one she used) and then click 'flatten and merge'. This will comp all your puzzle pieces into one full take 😉Thank me later!

Holy guaca, this was 12 minutes straight of high quality entertainment and straightforward tips. When you automated the volume, I thought "why aren't you just using a compressor for that instead?" But doing all that clean up and then running the compressor definitely leads to a much smoother and more natural vocal👌 Saving this to watch and rewatch later. Thanks! 👍👍👍

Interesting approach, it's possibly genre specific or just personal preference but I always do my volume automation dead last. That said I'm usually working with very dense mixes with the genres I mostly work with so heavy compression is usually step 1 which irons out the need for much detailed automation.
@mtnmoo Жыл бұрын
Nah I 100% agree I think automation should always be last, volume is going to change with compression and eq changes

One suggestion on vocals, add a pre-delay before sending to your reverb. That way, the reverb return audio containing processed consonance and sibilance doesn't compete with the attack and jumbles up the performance's intelligibility with too much time-smear on the leading edge.

When you automate the volume of the lead vocals, does it create a more natural sound as opposed to skipping automation and relying only on compression? Also, when you're auto tuning the rap vocals, how can tell if spoken word/rap vocals are in the right key? I totally get it for singing, but cannot clearly hear it for rap vocals. Excellent toots. Thanks.

My favorite part of mixing? Hmm. So far, it's always been pretty hard work for me, not necessarily a ton of fun. Kind of stressful, actually, because of the endless decision-making that it takes to mix a track. Don't even get me started on mastering. I look forward to a time when I can mix tracks more instinctively & efficiently. What I'm really after is making cohesive songs and albums that get people to dance and sing along. And/or ambient tracks that lull people into certain moods. Also, soundstaging is really important to me; I care a lot about creating a 3-dimensional sound in my recordings (bass to treble frequencies x L-R panning x front-back "in your face" vs. "in the background") So overall, my favorite part of mixing is creating a successful 3D soundstage that balances a track in a way that puts people into the intended mood lot of hard work per track, is all I can say, so far.

It is definitely a lot of work but I am sure with practice you will be able to do it more instinctively and fast, with better techniques to help you make decisions!
