Pultec EQ Atten is not related to the "High Frequency", it is related to the "Atten Sel'" that means you rolled off the frequency above 5k

This is the first video from this channel that I’ve seen with this particular instructor: I genuinely thought that this was one of the clearest explanations of an audio engineering trick I think I’ve ever seen. I literally understood every word he said, it just made perfect sense to me. All of these people giving “constructive criticism,” like just listen to what he’s saying, he’s telling you literally everything you need to know 😂 Great job bro, I’m a fan 👊🏻

Pro-Tip. The high "ATTN" frequency is selected by the "ATTN SEL" selector, NOT the "High Frequency" selector . So, you are cutting at 5K, NOT 3k.

The High Frequency selector and the the Attenuation knob, don't work together. The Atten knob is affected by the Attenuation Selector.

@@r3furbish3dbrain12 sorry but at the end this is not compression, he is ADDING 2 signals (one of them being a compressed copy of the other), but an addition actually. The only sum of 2 signals being 0 as result is 0+0.

This parallel process is an old Dave Pensado technique, and the original process was a combination of dbx and pultec. Joshua just used Dave's technique to emulate Bob Power's low end, this does not imply Bob Power's actual process.

Love the tip. It’s called an expander and it does expansion, like a compressor does compression. I didn’t know this use of it, but I have gotten some similar impacts with a multiband compressor/expander, getting parallel compression/expansion by adjusting the wet/dry knob.

Good video, but i think you should had given the advice to use a linear phase EQ in the parallel track.
@STyonk
@STyonk 11 ай бұрын
Possibly, but the EQ curve of the Pultec and the Non linear Saturation was probably part of the 'sauce' he was trying to add to the Kick. He did mention checking the phase though with some meter and inverting it if need be.
@1erwayne
@1erwayne 11 ай бұрын
@@STyonk Nope I'd never had any phase problems with a UAD pultec. Had he used a hpf, he may have needed it.

@@STyonk Possibly, just saying that should mention it, maybe in the future video of phase he talk about this. Using Linear Phase EQ when processing a parallel track its not a mantra, but I think it deserve to always test it if works on this type of scenario, maybe he test it and the solution was worst than the problem due to pre-ringing. Any way good video and great plugin, I use this exact technique on vocals.
@STyonk
@STyonk 11 ай бұрын
Definitely, Linear Phase is an advanced concept to explore. Seems he wanted to keep it more simple to not intimidate beginners. Linear Phase EQ when treating transient material tends to cause smearing , which might be less preferable on Drums. But it's a good theoretical topic to explore.

My man's never used a Pultech before. So the BOOST frequency is 3k, sure, but the Attentuation frequency is 5k. You aren't touching 3k at all but are attenuating over 5k. You still got the results obviously, but just saying. When talking newbs on KZbin though this stuff, might be better to be familiar with your tools. Peace

@memeswillneverdie
@memeswillneverdie 11 ай бұрын
Not quite, an expander attenuates the signal that goes below the threshold to expand the dynamic range (basically just a really soft gate) vs upward compression increases the volume of the signal that goes below the threshold thus bringing up the quiet parts instead of smashing the transients
