VocalChain in Cubase is brilliant! Not something I've seen in any other DAW as a stock plugin so it's great to have a 'one-stop-shop' plugin like this in Cubase. Great video as always. 👍

Dom in the pitch section in external MIDI mode you can do very very cool things like choruses etc etc... I really like it, it's like an alterboy from soundtoys Brutal and the fact that it's inside Cubase makes things easier. A hug

THanks Dom! This convinced me to upgrade to cubase 13 from 12 :) Cubase keeps smashing it exactly when i need these updates! I bought 10 just as they introduced inserting video in the DAW and it saved my project! they've done the same thing here again with this! Saving my vocal in a song I'm mixing!

The vocal chain plugin is awesome, especially for cubase artist users. Normally you have no stock dynamic eq in cubase artist, but nothing stops you from using the vocal chain on instruments and only activate the dynamic eq. Even sidechaining is available, wich makes it really useful for the mix in general :)

Great video Dom. Helpful as always. Instead of playing with the plugins trying to find sweet spots, you know what you want in advance and know how to achieve that. I clearly have more videos I need to watch. Do you have any tips on how to get rid of hissing on a track without killing the sparkle in the vocal? Like the kind of hiss you might get from an old VHS tape or camcorder or old movie or something. I've tried lots of different things around the top end like cutting frequencies, filters and multi band compressors but the vocal suffers every time and becomes muffled. Thanks.

Ok, my PC is not a super super high end device - but when I built it a few years ago it wasn't that bad either. But with the Vocalchain (which I only tried once) I had massive latency problems. Even the largest possible buffer size of 2048 reached its limit. Can anyone confirm this?

Dom has a great video about rendering in place which allowed me to free up resources like I couldn'tt believe. Just be sure to disable the original track after you render it so that all the processing on the original track (base or drums or other instruments) is not engaged. Hope that helps.

Hi, Dom! The timing is splendid. My colleague vocalist just started diving into mixing. I've been meaning to ask you. What's your standard for allowed dynamic range for vocals or solo main instruments before you start processing it? I see in this case the recording is not completely flat . some of the phrases have bigger peaks and some of them has lower peaks.

I said it in the past but one of the reasons Im not using this plugin is because of the dynamic filter, it doesn't have solo button to hear the frequency you are working with and it means that you need to work with your eyes and not with your ears, makes it not very musical. I hope Steinberg will add this function down the line. Thanks again for all your hard work and dedication.

The plugin is called vocal chain. A little misleading to say you can do all that with one plug in which would impossible unless you had a plugin that is a combination of many multiple processors and plugins like this one.

Regardless of the expectations in the genre, the vocoder effect is ironically most unsettling when used subtly and cryptically, as it draws the ear's attention to something unnatural and slightly uglifying of the human voice, but it is not expressed as a clear and intentional impediment. The listener's experience becomes disjointed. As advised, it seems best to avoid it unless this effect is a high priority. I can't remember the song, but, in the early '90s, a vocoder of a semi-popularised and mildly Indy record was used very obviously to disrupt the voice in the extreme. The effect was the major signature of the tune, and, at the time, a complete novelty. In that singular case, it served its purpose well. Separate from technical emergencies where the singer was severely off-pitch, the best artistic reason to use it will probably always be as a highlighted novelty.
