This is what the internet has been missing when it comes to mixing. Useful information in a great atmosphere.

Great to see that a local talent is doing so well. Thank you so much for sharing your time and expertise with us. From a fellow Montreal native. Peter

Hey Arlo great points of concern and I actually think Gee addressed them vary well I will just expand. The listener isn't supposed to notice (hopefully) but as an engineer you do what you can to show off the performance. Every compressor and EQ does something different which all aids in getting the final character. One compressor might be leveling while the other is adding tone, one EQ is fixing problems and the other is adding some edge. Hopefully you understand these points. Cheers.

Concerning the multiple comps, to each their own my friend there is no wrong or right way, just the way that gets you where you want to go. As I mentioned in the video they all are doing their thing. Instead of reducing 5-6 dB with 1 comp, I prefer using more subtle strokes. Cheers

thanks for your comment, you do bring up a good point concerning the gain staging.The problem that I've found with the slate VCC is that it doesn't go low enough for me. I also like keeping these things separate incase I need to track down a problem.

I think Ghislain Brind'Amour misunderstanding C1 side-chain comp workflow. It doesn't compress specific spectrum range. it use it like a reference to compress the overall signal.

Thanks for your comment. I had to go back and check but you are correct the C1 SC is'nt on the right mode (as far as what I was explaining anyways, it should have been on split mode).

I appreciated your video because it addresses issues I face in addressing my own folk rock leanings. I also found the song and the songwriter to be excellent. The raw vocal recording sounded excellent. What an excellent start. I enjoyed watching the process steps (gain staging, eq frequency adjustment (cutting), smoothing and transient control, sweetening, etc.). What were the panning considerations and side-chaining considerations? Your efforts have helped me improve my own home grown mixes.

@Joe Malinovsky - Theres no actually side chaining on this mix, as I mentioned in the tutorial all the parts worked really well with each other so I didnt need to push stuff around. Panning wise its a little all over the place. One thing I did on this one was pan the Higher Harmonies closer to the middle. Mainly because I wanted them to cut through a little more and not interfere with the guitars, strings and all that other high end stuff. hope that gets you started!

@Bruce Nawa - Part 2 should be out on Saturday. We'll be going through Automation, parallel compression and the FX I used on the lead vocal. you can definitely do all of this in Cubase (or any other DAW for that matter). again thanks for checking this out guys!

In the vocal track, how visually the wave forms are going above 0 db. is this not bad? or its just controlled by trim plugin. if yes then anyway what is the point of making wave forms so loud (touching zero db)

On the mcdsp 1176 why is the release set more towards 1, I thought 7 was fast and 1 was slow on 1176's? Is this plugin opposite from the others in regards to attack and release?
@ModernMixing10 жыл бұрын
The McDSP works the other way around. Cheers.
@ram72747 жыл бұрын
I was also thinking 1176 must work this way that when release is 7 then its fast and same with attack. I have seen with many 1176- waves, Softubes etc, they all have same behavior but here its opposite.

just once in a while, these guys need to come at these vids like they had no clue when they recorded the tracks to begin with.take my situation for example, when i recorded the tracks i am trying to mix, i had no clue what i was doing, i was working with the cheapest gear imaginable.from guitars to mics even the recorder was not intended to be pro. and now i am in no position to go back and redo. so i am stuck trying to make it sound decent. most starting out. prob. make same mistakes. lets see!

Since the Slate Virtual Console has a gain reduction knob, couldn't you just skip the trim plugin and trim using the console? And with all due respect, I really don't see why so many duplicate plugins? He has EQ/compressor/another compressor/another compressor/and another EQ. At the end of the day, is the person listening ever really going to notice? I'm beginning to believe less is more when it comes to mixing.
