I am a Puigchild 670 fan as well, never found any other coming close to the Waves one and the punch and depth it delivers. Good demonstration and the effect on the sum (as usually with this one) even if not compressing hard, just glues things together. Bypassed it sounds like a collection of tracks, with it switched on, it sounds like a mix!

I don’t know how true Waves (or other plug manufacturers) have stayed to the original 670 hardware, as many make slight tweaks (and sometimes even coding major adjustments) to the specs and functions of the original HW they are modeling... But, FWIW, here are the settings and their response times for the 6 Constants on the actual 670: Attack; .2ms in positions 1,2&6 and .4ms in positions 3, 4, &5 Release times (referenced at 10db of limiting) are: Position 1: .3 seconds (300ms) Position 2: .8 seconds (800ms) Position 3: 2seconds (2000ms) Position 4: 5 seconds (5000ms) Position 5: program dependent, ranging from 2 seconds for individual peaks, to 10 seconds for multiple peaks Position 6: Program dependent, ranging from .3 seconds for individual peaks, to 10 seconds for multiple peaks, to as long as 25 seconds for continual high program level/db. Michael White I also love it on vocals. One things I like about it is even though its "color" is subtle it helps round out the sound so if something is just a tiny bit to edgy this can help round it out just a little.

I tried it on master, its sucks a lot from the bass and low mid energy…if you ask me, not good for master bus at all…unless its some brighter music perhaps? I can hear that bass is also quieter in this video when switching. I assume ots great on separate tracks or busses such as strings etc…something where it can add that vintage sound/boddy to

Hey Mike, do you prefer the UAD or the Waves Fairchild if you had to choose one now that this plugin is a few years old .
@mixingwithmike4 жыл бұрын
UAD hands down. Have yet to see an emulation that's better in terms of the sound and feel. That said, some emulations like the PuigChild by Waves is a great tool and used in almost every mix I do.

How about this plugin versus the SSL B - Comp when and why to use them in the master buss, thanks for your videos they are great!!
@mixingwithmike8 жыл бұрын
Different sound. This is a much warmer compressor and is better at RMS style compression. The SSL is a better pump and breathe compression with a ballsier midrange.

Hey, Mike. Curious, I noticed you discouraged using it on an entire mix (and the explanation makes sense) but are you not doing that on this mix? I'm confused....
@mixingwithmike9 жыл бұрын
Dennis Alvey Hi Dennis, Can you point to specific time where I say not to use it an an entire mix? I shot this video a long time ago but listened through again and couldn't find what you were talking about. I love this compressor on the mix buss if it fits the needs of the mix. Cheers! Mike
@DennisAlvey9 жыл бұрын
Well, I could be misunderstanding, but at arund 6:27 where you say if you use it on everything as opposed to one thing..... Was I taking it out of context? You do say you "could" use it on a mix bus but then...
@mixingwithmike9 жыл бұрын
Dennis Alvey Ah yes! I think a very common mistake mixers make is when they find something really amazing and think the mix will be better if they use it on everything. But the reverse usually happens because what makes it sound great is that it contrasts the other sounds. This is particularly true of emulations like the Fairchild. Hope this answers your question. Cheers! Mike

You need to listen to JJP explain where this plugin works best, and make a review video on that. He says it works best on vocals, and acoustic instruments.
@mixingwithmike8 жыл бұрын
+Tim Kasey Hi Tim, Thanks. I have worked with the real thing many times and assisted JJP many years ago when i worked at Electric Lady in NYC. He certainly has more experience with his own unit and what it works best on. When I used it it was mostly an exclusive compressor that I used for vocals or the mix bus. I was trying to express the historical perspective of using it where only 1 would be available. Obviously a plugin allows for as many instantiations as your CPU can handle and the options are endless. I have a full course on compression where I feature this in more situations. Cheers! Mike

Ive had this plugin for a long time and I love it. The Finalizer preset really glues tracks together. But I had a questions so does the LAT/VERT setting split your track?Basically can I use the top part as a normal compressor and the bottom to parallel compress through the same plugin all at once.
@mixingwithmike9 жыл бұрын
marcuelcajon Hey marcuelcajon, Yes, this is an amazing one! There is no way to run a parallel chain within the plugin. The Lat/Vert turns it into a Mid/Side processor just like the original hardware. It was originally used for mastering before the cutting lathe for vinyl records controllng the Lateral and Vertical movement of the cutting head. Hope this answers your question... Cheers! Mike

oh man... you say you've worked with Fairchilds a lot, but then you go on to say that the "time constant" switch really "doesn't make a difference" wherever you put it... at 2:43. Huh? What? Actually, there are quite a bit of difference in the time constants of this limiter, and the DO matter. It's worth noting that the Puigchild's time constants 5 and 6 are REVERSED from an actual Fairchild unit, though. Don't know why they did that, but they did.
@mixingwithmike9 жыл бұрын
Hey Slamcrank, I think you should watch the video again. What I said very clearly was that the Time Constant is effectively a Release control and the Attack Time is not really effected by the setting which is 100% true. The release time is dramatically effected as stated very clearly in the video starting at 5:00. You gotta bring better game than that on this channel, hahaha :-) There are several factors that make emulating 50-60 year old components a problem and that is the fact that over time the components degrade and become far less efficient than the original specifications. Exact replacement parts are nearly impossible to find. I believe I read somewhere that Waves admits that the specs were not as precise as the original but decided to be true to JJPs unit instead of trying to manipulate the emulation. I have not heard anything about Time Constant 5-6 being reversed. Please let me know where you found that information... Cheers! Mike

This one has a but of aliasing in the 8-9K area which can be annoying at times, and other times it's helpful. You can debate accuracy to the original hardware, if you have JJP's hardware Fairchild for comparison, but otherwise a very useable plugin.
