I have the same experience with a Walther PPK/S in 22LR; bulged cases and finally a split rim that gave me a face full of hot gas and particles. It was a new gun and Walther's customer service is top notch, sent me a shipping label for the return so it cost me nothing. A week later I received it back with a sheet saying they had replaced the barrel and extractor. About 60 rounds later it did they exact same thing and I got a face full of gas again. Customer service took care of me again and a week later I got it back with a "new barrel" except I had put a mark on it with a marker before I shipped it. The mark was still there when it came back and about 30 rounds later another ruptured case. It is back in for the third time now, hopefully they get it right this time because the gun is a lot of fun to shoot. We shall see. This has made me a firm believer in using eye protection all the time, every time when using a firearm.

not telling you your business I would have put the each time it and cases happen on video and also putting mark on gun and the returning of the weapon to you showing what they did or didn’t do . it sounds like with that the might should give you a hole new complete gun or your money back give you one of equal or more value of another caliber to not get bad publicity. if it we me and they won’t satisfy me I would take and make signs for my vehicle saying I won’t buy there weapons no more explanation why. put on internet videos of it on vehicle driving around with it any where you can also send them pictures and video. when those at the higher management see that they would bend over backwards to personally see to you needs . and if contacted asking what would satisfy you I would say I think I deserve two new guns for all the trouble you put me through would be fair enough and that would take the signs down. that’s what I would do. but you do have options. Nana and papa aka the hunter wishing you well

Great video. Glad to hear you had such success with Walther's customer service, especially with a used pistol. I had a great experience with Ruger customer service (albeit with a new pistol). My SR22 had FTE issues. Sent it back (on Ruger's dime). Got it back in eight days. IIRC, they replaced the extractor and a spring and sent 30 test rounds through it. They also sent me a new carry pouch and an extra magazine. Free.

I bought a Ruger PCC and another 10/22 last year. I had to replace the PCC extractor after about 500 rounds and the 10/22 extractor is getting pretty worn at about 1700 rounds. I’m still a Ruger fan and will continue to buy their stuff but I think they’ve tried to save too much on extractor costs lately and it seems to be an issue.

I bought my PPQ M2 brand new and registered the warranty with them. Walther called me saying it COULD be affected by a design problem (I wonder if this was the design flaw they were worried about?) and that they'd ship me a box and take a look at it for me on their dime. It arrived back at my house a week later saying it was fine and not subject to the flaw. Honestly, Walther's customer service is what has me come back to them. I like the PPQ, daughter loves her PPQ 22, and wife loves her PPS (she's a tiny one). I broke down and bought a Sig 365, but I honestly prefer the Walthers for fun/shooting pleasure. Great company. Would recommend.

Next six, blew the loading gate open and burnt my hand. Checked the casing that came out hard and it was split wide open, across the back and down the side. We'll see how good Heritage is.

My shooting buddy has one of these. I love the way it feels, and shoots. I recently bought a PDP. THAT gun, is an excellent shooter. I'm left handed, and can also shoot fairly well right handed, but carry on my left hip. These giuns have a great ambi slide catch. My M&P 2.0 Compact, and my Beretta APX Centurion requires a Gorilla on crack to operate the tiny catch provided for us leftys. The PDP is actually slightly lighter than my other carry guns, too. Walther is a great company. Great review... I'm a subscriber... and a Reno resident for 28 years now.

I missed this video last week. Maybe it's because I was out in the New Mexico desert shooting my Ruger SR22 and Henry Frontier .22. Anyway, I bet that feed ramp in the barrel is why it was sold as a used pistol. I'd wager the previous owner decided to "slick it up" some, then realized he'd screwed it up and sold it. I'm glad you made this video, as my wife was wanting the same pistol, but in some girlie color. It's either that, or she steals the Ruger I mentioned above - even though she already has a little Beretta 21 Bobcat in .22 LR. Thanks for another great video.

Got my wife a Walther P-22 w/ 5" barrel (the pre-cursor to the PPQ-22) about 10 yrs ago. Shoots fairly well but it is a little picky with with the ammo. It seems to cycle the high velocity 40 gr bullets better than the 36 grain bullets. With the lighter weight bullet or any slower velocity ammo, it seems to have just enough recoil to push the slide back far enough to eject the round, but not enough to strip the next round off the magazine. So every now and then the slide will go home on an empty chamber. Using the heavier bullets seems to help with that. I just saw the other day that there is a replacement recoil spring and guide rod that many people say has helped with this issue. Other than that it's a fun little pinker. My wife doesn't ever plan to get rid of it either.

I have had a similar concern. Unfortunately was not able to inspect the cases as we usually shoot at an indoor range. I did see one case that was blown out at the back like your sons. My biggest concern was a a lot of debris in the barrel after shooting. It was very difficult to remove. A lot of silver metal flakes and I was using lead round tip bullets. Could barley push a cleaning brush through the barrel. When this condition happened on my next range trip but did not happen to my brother's P22 I discounted the ammo as the concern. I did contact Walther and returned the pistol, left some of the flaking in the barrel and sent some flakes I cleaned out. They did replace the barrel also and had the pistol back in my hands a week later. Very good service. This pistol was purchased new in August 2020. My replacement barrel looks like your replacement barrel. Stay safe and watch the heat out there is Southern Nevada. take it from a neighbor in Arizona.

Could the ammo you were using have been Remington Thunderbolts bulk pack? That stuff leads up my pistol barrels something awful.

Wow - that was a lot of blowback from a little old .22 cartridge. I've seen case head failure in .22s before, but only with a rifle during the conduct of an experiment. At first I thought maybe the Walther fired out of battery, but when you showed the bulged case heads I figured there must have been an unsupported portion at the rear of the chamber similar to what early Glocks were infamous for, the feature that left the celebrated "Glock Smile" on fired cases. Props to Walther for fixing the problem on their dime. I would expect a reputable manufacturer to do that, though, being as how it was a dangerous condition that could have caused serious injury to a shooter. Glad they did the right thing and that you got the piece back in working order. Looks like a reasonably accurate and fun little shooter. Stay safe out there.

Glad he wasn't injured. I believe I will order some shooting glasses. I saw this Walther ppq 22 in your holster video and was curious about it. My thoughts include getting a similar set of pistols in .22 and 9mm. For instance the PDP 5" 9mm and PPQ 5" .22, or Berretta M9 .22 and Girsan or Berretta 9mm. It just crossed my mind to have a similar pistol to train with in .22 I do have it in my mind to get a full size 9mm for target and home use.

This happened to me with my first gen Walther P22. Shooting Armscor .22LR during the big .22 ammo scare of 2012. That stuff was so dirty... The case clearly fired out of battery and blew the case head apart. It burned my hands leaving black powder marks on them. It peppered my hands with burning powder and brass pieces. It blasted me in the face with gas. It also broke the slide lock spring in half and blew it out the side of the gun between the frame and the slide. I only found the half that stayed stuck to the gun. The other half ended up somewhere on the floor, never found it. That is the first and only OOB discharge I've experienced. It was scary. If that was my 10mm, I'd be in deep trouble... Other than the slide lock spring, the gun was fine once I pried the case out. That Armscor ammo is in the bottom of the pile now and always has been since. It'll only be fired from my revolvers and my bolt action rifle. No semi-autos ever.

I just got this recommended. I had this exact problem with an AR22 upper I had. The issue ended up being the barrel sleeve not being properly secured and just slowly moving forward. Eventually it got forward enough to where the casing did not have enough support and the shell blew out just like yours. My case was loud as hell because I was shooting suppressed and did not have ears on. Ouch!!! A gun smith epoxied the barrel/sleeve in place to fix the issue/make sure head space is right.

I’ve had a case rupture before with 22s and seen it happen to others, but if it’s happening with that amount of frequency with the bulged cases, there’s definitely an issue with the gun. Wow! 10 Days!!! Thats what I call service! At no cost too, legendary service! Wow the difference between the new and old Barrel is crazy I wonder if they were encountering that problem a lot and decided to switch up the designers barrel and get rid of that feed ramp. Considering the way that 22 long rifle bullets are made I don't think there be too many feeding issues because the bullets are basically seated lightly and pressed on to the case instead of seated into it and crimped like Centerfire ammo.

I suppose when you're buying a second hand anything, there is always the chance that you'll inherit the problems that could come with it -- in this case this gun with its accompanying problems. But, it all came to a good use, because if you hadn't had those problems, I, for one, would not have known what a ruptured or bulging case was all about. As it was, the problem took a while to show itself in this video. I have always liked the way you go to great lengths to show what the problems you deal with look like -- carefully showing us in close up shots what to look for in every problem you do have with your guns. It was no different here. I was happy to hear that you had such good service from Walther. I tell you what, there is nothing that sets a person's mind at rest, especially in the firearms arena, than to know you are going to get good service from the company that manufactured the item -- and, as you said, they went way and beyond what they were supposed to do in order to restore that gun to proper use. I was so glad to see that the gun worked flawlessly when you got it back. Now you just have to remember to keep your "fat" thumb away from the magazine release, so that your magazine doesn't keep falling out of the gun .... or did Walther sort out that little problem too. I, for one would be most impressed if they did. Well, I enjoyed every moment of this video, as I usually do when you make them. I ALWAYS learn SOMETHING when I watch your videos. Thank you very much for all the hard work you put in to making them and I am looking forward to the next one. (^_^) This video will definitely be going into my "Shooting a Pistol" playlist. Perhaps somebody else will be able to identify the same problem with their gun by watching it. I hope you have a fabulous weekend with your family. Kind regards. Liz.

Looks to me that the original owner had trouble with it and it was brand new. Someone tried to use a grinder on the feed ramp and fudded it up. Some things are just lemons right from the start. How did it get past QC at Walther? People are unethical if they sell or trade a malfunctioning gun to someone else without fixing it first. Guns can be inherently dangerous and to do something like this is highly negligent on the part of both the original owner and the dealer who did not fire the gun to check it for proper functioning. In my opinion guns should come with an operator's notebook to record all maintenance and repairs signed by the gunsmith. This is how aircraft are treated. A maintenance log is kept, and without the logs, the plane is basically only useful for parts. Guns should have maintenance logs kept with each one throughout the life of the gun.

Several years ago, I ordered several S&W M&P .40's that were traded in from a police department. (I am a FFL dealer) All but one were perfect. One had feeding issues. I emailed the factory and they have the same mailing label procedure. It came back in two weeks and had mostly new parts installed. That gun still runs perfectly for the Marine I gave it to a few days later. He loves it. I wonder if the PPQ first barrel had been modified before you got it. Had same thing happen to me with a Smith & Wesson 22 A1. Didn’t notice if cases bulged but case ruptured. Well the whole back of case came off. And it blew my mag out the bottom and extractor came off. Burnt my hand and popped crap in my face. It took a little longer. Bout a month but they sent me a new gun.

IMPORTANT! I wouldn't be so sure the pistol is a culprit here. Same happened to me while shooting from a bolt action, 5-round magazine rifle (CZ's model). Additionally, I've been as unfortunate as to not having a magazine on the rifle (I was loading manually, one cartridge after another). Now, this was a kind of ammo I wasn't familiar with (I did not use it before) - it's case was kinda "CCI silver-plated" instead of having that usual brass color and the bullet was a bit shorter (and copper-plated) whereas the case was a bit longer than usual and the "final" length was equal to any other 22 LR ammo (no doubt about it). What I had noticed upon the chambering of the first cartridge was that I had to use more force than usual, but, alas! I did not pay enough attention to it. To cut the long story short: the third cartridge went into the chamber just like the first and the second one (both were fired without any problem) and booom!...the case got ruptured, resulting in a mild bruise and a burn of my left hand's wrist! Upon the later inspection I realized that the ENTIRE bottom of the case was missing and that the rest of the case remained in the chamber (I had to use a metal rod to extract it by pushing the rod from the muzzle, backwards). Now, I did not give up, and I continued firing these cartridges BUT, before chambering them and firing, I put them in and out few times - each one of them - this time from the magazine and I did not have any such issues. Conclusion&advice: the cartridge obviously did not "sit" correctly within the chamber, so, whenever you're about to use a suspicious ammo, BEFORE actually shooting it, chamber and re-chamber it at least once - that way you will make sure the cartridge got "accommodated" to the chamber, so to speak.

I've got an old RG cowboy revolver, Dad gave it to me many years ago. It's fired alot of different rounds. Always fired just great. But acouple years back, I decided to fire some CCI 22 bird shot through it a friend of mine had given me. It fired them just fine. But when I ejected the empties from the cylinder, I noticed all 6 of the empty cases were split, real bad. These are the only rounds that have ever did this in this gun. I won't use them in this revolver again.

@@shadowwolf2524 Yeah, that was my point: not all the ammo brands/models are suitable for all weapon of the same caliber.

(in the end...) good to see. I have been shooting so much more .22lr these days than anything else... neat to see another pistol option to consider.

A one year, original owner only warranty? I did not know that. Walther charges a lot for their guns. You'd think they'd come with a better one than that. They sound as if they have pretty good customer service though and that is well and good, but the fact remains. Either a company stands behind their product or they don't. There is usually a good reason why someone sells a gun. The original owner of this one did not want to live with its poor performance, and may have gotten shrapnel in the face too. Glad you are happy, but wow.

The asking price for a new one is way to much for my liking. Could this be a recall issue for Walther? I'll stick with my old tried and tested Ruger Mark II

I know what you mean about your tried and tested Ruger Mark II. I have a stainless Mark II and my son has a Mark I...maybe someday I'll do a review on both of these great pistols.

If you still have it can you do a new review on your old Century Arms .308 R1A1 FN FAL?

Hello Amos...unfortunately I sold my .308 R1A1 about five years ago, but I did replace it with a Bushmaster AR-10.

A friend of mine had a Century Arms 308 G-3 copy a few years back. After only a few mags through it, it blew up. Destroyed the receiver. Luckily, he only had some minor injuries. He took what was left of the rifle back to the gunshop he had bought it from. After giving him a hard time and accusing him of using hot handloads in it (which he didn't. He only used the ammo he bought from them when he bought the gun) they let him pick another gun that cost what he had spent on the rifle. I wouldn't recommend Century Arms guns to anyone.

You have my philosophy. All bullets should be in the same hole... I had to work on my SR22 for the inherit feed issue but I can pop 4" dingers at 25 yards all day long.

Thank God this wasn't any more of a server malfunction. Is it due to a very hard strike or the chamber tolerance to tight for the round? Two different ammunition same result.... Definitely waiting for the update on the cause.

Smart policy - they don't an unsafe gun among the masses. My guess is that they have seen this issue before, explaining the timely turnaround. As always, enjoy the videos and stay safe!

Thanks for an excellent video. We have a Walther PPQ SC in 9mm and really love the ergonomics and fantastic trigger. Even though your pistol is a different caliber I will be keeping an eye out for any possible similar issue. Do you know how old your Walther is? Fortunately, I haven't had to utilize Walther customer service but every time I hear someone talk about the customer service it has been similar to your experience. I've got an upcoming outdoor range day next week in the desert and the forecast is saying 106 degrees that day, lol. I still enjoy shooting in the desert. BTW, I hope your son had no issues from the ruptured case and is doing well. 👍🏼
