This is a perfect tutorial for what I am looking for. Not brain-dead like a lot of KZbin, but still covering everything I needed to hear at the perfect speed. Thanks!

Nice one mate.. I've just used this trick on a female vocal. warmed it up nicely. A reminder how good Decapitator is.👍

YO BRO what effects your using on your vocals, or hardware and microphone? like on your talking voice lol
@SICKZ Жыл бұрын
Hi Jerry, i am using from an year the decapitator but instead of using this over the principal vocal channel i use it just after the compressor over the parallel compression aux. So i basically mix the vocals as i like then send in to another track on the mixer, heavy compress the vocals with CLA76 black (like 20dbs of compression) and then i add the decapitator that i set as more i like. Than if the vocals sound too muddy or shine i just use an eq to cut the mud or the harshness. Is this good or would be better insert the decapitator on the original mixer track and then parallel compress it as usual? Please let me know what you think about this technique. I most mix rap vocals.
@ChevyQuis Жыл бұрын
your approach with decapitor on a return track specifically is more cpu efficient, but the dry wet knob gives you the same parrallel processing affect

Thanks for the demonstration but I was distracted how good your audio for the video sounds.. do you have a video explaining your set up or could you tell me? I’m getting into voiceovers. Thank you

In this video I have a condenser mic placed right underneath my camera just out of frame. I think I used the Neumann TLM-103. Just have some basic post processing on it utilizing various plugins. EQ, Compression (about 10db of gain reduction), and a De-Esser. On the EQ I like to boost at around 100hz to bring the bass in my voice out more. Also a high shelf boost at 12khz will make it more bright.

@@mixwithjerry thanks for the response. I’m assuming you have good room treatment using a condenser mic

@@MitchellFxnesse yeah I’ve invested in room treatment for pretty much every corner and have a cloud hanging above me.. but still experimenting with mic choice and placement

I was gonna ask the same question, boom here is it asked and answered thoroughly. Secondly, immediately he choosed the option he went with in that saturator , I immediately told myself “That’s it”. And that was it for him too. 😂 I just started loving this guy now. This is me watching his first video. I am subscribing immediately.

No I don’t have a video but all I used was the CLA Vocals plugin by Waves.

Jer I'm a folk singer songwriter, my vocals are on the warm / softer side, however I want to my vocal have a little more grit/edge (think damien rice). Would this benefit a folk singer-songwriter vocal to give it just a natural grit mixed with my warm softer vocal? Or does this work best with a vocal more like in this KZbin video or could it sound good on singer/songwriter vocals? Thanks this is a great video
@mixwithjerry Жыл бұрын
I do this on pretty much every vocal but in a pretty subtle way depending on the genre. I think it would definitely be okay for singer/songwriter where I’m assuming it’s just vocals and acoustic guitar? The thing with lead vocals in any genre is you don’t want to ever overdo an effect unless you’re intentionally going for an exaggerated grit. Parallel compression also is another great tool for lead vocals to experiment with if the saturation isn’t working. It really helps put the vocal in your face for lack of better words.

@@mixwithjerry thanks Jerry I'll experiment :)

do you put the saturation directly on the bus or on a send track?

I put the saturation directly on the main vocal’s track.

Yo do you make your own beats and record the vocals and mix it all in one session in FL Studio?
@mixwithjerry10 ай бұрын
Yes unless I use a lot of computer heavy instruments when making the beat. Then I’ll bounce the audio tracks and bring them into a new session for recording and mixing.

Hi, I know I´m late, but may I ask why have u used the mono version of Nls plugin? I´m new in mixing and wonder what´s the differnce between mono and stereo versions of different plugins and what and when should I use it. Thanks a ton :)
@mixwithjerry Жыл бұрын
I use the mono version of the plugins on mono sound sources (the vocal signal is mono because it was recorded with a single microphone). If it was a stereo synthesizer or something recorded with a dual mic setup then I would use the stereo version plugins.

Hi Jerry. Is there an analyzer you can recommend to look at harmonics of a plugins? I'm using Logic on a Mac. Thanks!

Any spectral analyzer will show you the frequency spectrum and you’ll be able to see what’s being added. SPAN by Voxengo is free and works well.
