Matty's point about scratch/single digit players looking at these and bending them weak is exactly where my mind went. I'm surprised more high end players haven't done this already...maybe these are the hollow bodies that will get people over the hump. I’ve been playing the OG ‘08 AP2s since they were new. I haven’t been able to find anything I liked in the past few years since I’ve been looking. Hit the mizuno 225 yesterday. I was thoroughly impressed with the looks, and most importantly, the FEEL. I’ve tried many other hollow irons and none of them come close to the feel of this mizuno, in my opinion. I never thought I’d be able to move away from fully forged into the age of iron tech. I thought I’d have to give up. The mizuno 225 renewed my faith in modern iron tech. Do yourself a favor and TRY THESE. You won’t regret it.

Just tried out a 225 7-iron with the Project X IO regular flex shaft at my golf range. I have used Mizuno forged blades for years (MP-33 and MP-67) so have a high regard for their irons. But here's the problem. The 225 7-iron has a 30 degree loft. My current 7-iron has a 36 degree loft (Chicago Classics blades almost identical to MP-33s, forged in Taiwan, designed by Bob Evans who was director of production and director of tour operations for MacGregor Golf and president of his own company from 1987 to 1995) and my 6-iron has 32 degrees. I'm 80, a 16 to 17 handicapper, so my swing speed is nowhere near that of Ian or Matt. Did a fitting in June with Trackman. My best shot with my 7-iron was club speed 74.8, ball speed 100.6, smash factor 1.34, launch 22.9 degrees, height 81 feet, carry 137.3, total 146.4, descent angle 46.3. The 225 7-iron obviously went further. As far as I could tell just by sight hitting to a green with a flag, a good strike probably carried an additional 10 to 12 yards. I can't help thinking it might be nice to upgrade to a new high tech club like the 225 to get more distance. However, my conclusion was that it would not be worth spending $200 a club to change to the 225 irons, even if I had the money. To get those extra yards I can just take out my 6 iron. With a 32 degree loft, it will go high enough and have enough of a descent angle to stop on the green. Using a ball with good spin can also help. And finally, while I agree the 225 does not sound "clicky" I still prefer the feel of my solid forged blades and the sound they make with a good strike in the sweet spot. So for what it's worth, if you are just buying a first set of premium irons, the 225s (or 223s or 221s) may well be a great choice. But they won't work miracles. If you like the clubs you have, it may be better to know your distances and gaps and stick with what you've got. Especially if you're a stubborn old goat who just loves the feel and sound of solid forged blades.

Ben Hogan PTX pro is the butter zone. Compact hollow head with normal lofts. I'm a 7 handicap and use the Ben Hogan players combo set. Have the mp20 HMBs, scratch golfer. Like others have said, the only bad thing is the gapping. I have standard lofts on these and my PW goes 150, 7i 200. It’s a lot of guessing on the course for those in between distances, but the forgiveness is amazing. Also made me switch my wedges to 50, 54, 58 to get gapping correct for the scoring clubs. Still love them overall.

Curious to actually see these in person as I currently play the MP 20 HMB’s and I do notice from the spec sheets some loft differences. For me personally I can live with the size of the HMB’s (I play off of 6 HC), but will be interesting to see if there is a performance advantage of the 225 vs the HMB’s (other than size). Thanks again for yet another great video. Well done as always! 🏌🏻👍
@GolfNut103 жыл бұрын
Agree my exact comments. I got myHMBs in spring 2020 and have dropped from 8 to 5 Hcp. Once I started playing them and how solid they felt I never notice the size being too large. I’d be interested to see the 7 HMB bent 1 degree strong and the 225 1 degree weak so they were equal and then do a comparison of ball speed, carry, height and land angle. Ian says 17 yards farther than his 7 but the lofts is more of a 6.5
@andrewbegg34523 жыл бұрын
Really have my eye on these but the main thing I noticed: PW carries 140, 7i carries 190 so 50 yards to gap with 2 more clubs. Thats over 16 yards in between clubs. And then 4i carried 220, so 10 yard gaps between 7i and 4i. Obviously a gapping session solves this, but I notice so many of these clubs (I have the same issue with my P790s) jump in the 8, 7, 6 irons and then 6, 5, 4 are kind of muttled together. Again, adjusting the lofts solves the issue, but wondering why OEMs set their lofts where they do. Any opinions are welcome!

I just did a fitting with my GolfTec coach and was fit into these irons. I was initially interested and planning on purchasing the PING i525 irons, but these were slightly longer and had better forgiveness on my mishits. They feel and sound great and look like a scratch players blades. I am glad I had an open mind and was able to hit a few different irons, (T200 Titleist, Mizuno PRO 225/223, PING i525). My current irons are Callaway Apex 2021 with Elevate 105 stiff shafts and they performed well. The ball speed was 2 mph faster and I was getting about 7-8 more yards carry with Mizuno 225's. I was fit into Modus Pro 105 stiff shafts which felt great and I was familiar with from a previous PXG set. My 7-iron carry was around 173 yds, 5300 spin, 46 deg landing angle, launch around 21 degrees. After seeing Ian and Matts comments regarding these irons, I am super excited to get them in my bag! TXG is the best golf equipment channel on KZbin, and the detail and knowledge Ian and his crew have is fantastic. I would say more like the p790. The topline etc maybe closer to p770 but the blade length is at least as long as p790 imo. It looks very nice but when you get it down by the ball I still think it is a stretch to call this a players iron. Also strong lofts. A nice club but really not a players club. Just my 2 cents. pw - 140 carry, 7i - 189 carry....so you have the 9 and 8 to cover a 50 yard gap....that's the problem with the new irons...gotta tweak lofts IMO otherwise the gapping can be way off, ETA (after finishing) ... 4i at 225 carry you have a 5 and 6 to cover 35 yrds...IMO the bottom end needs to have closer gapping and the higher gap should be at the top, they have it reversed. I guess it's just a product of who can make the longest 7i.
@dakota77703 жыл бұрын
Gotta consider all the factors. Someone with Ian’s club head speed isn’t really who these clubs are made for. But still, easily tweaked to make them work for him. He even said he would have to weaken them a degree or two. A 15 yard gap between clubs is acceptable. P-140, 9-155, 8-170, 7-185. You only have to lose 4 yards of carry off that 189 7i to obtain that. 👍

I used to play Ping i15's and switched to Mizuno Pro 225's about 9 months ago. For my 7 iron, i15's were a 155-160 carry with a low/mid ball flight and the 225 is a 160-165 carry with a high(er) ball flight. At 56, I dropped from a solid 8HC (prior 5 years) to a solid 5HC over the last 9 months I've owned the Mizuno's. I did take two 1-hr iron lessons prior to getting the Mizuno's but I honestly think the drop in HC was due more in part to these (10yr) newer irons. I actually loved the look at address of both sets of irons but the MP225's are damn sexy looking in the bag. When I was getting fitted on an open range with a flight scope, I compared it to the P790's which to me had a weird click or vibration I wasn't getting in the MP225's... maybe they were off center hits but thats the whole point when you're not scratch (yet 😎). As a side note, I took lessons from my local club PGA pro who played MP221 blades but had MP225's for his 4 and 3 iron. That probably biased my decision to choose the MP's over the P790's as well.

Ideal distance gapping in yards for me including 1/2, 3/4 and full swings on the wedges is Lob wedge 45-70 with 65 yards at a smooth swing, Sand wedge 75-95, Gap wedge 100-120, PW 125-132, 9 iron 145, 8 iron 157, 7 iron 170, 6 iron 183, 5 iron 195, 4 iron 210, 5w 225, 3w 245. I don't get the logic of gapping the 3w to the driver. If I was Kyle Berkshire and my driver carried 400 yards I wouldn't want a 3w that carried 370 yards. If an iron fitting is giving me a 170 yard 7 iron I know its probably going to work ok for me.

The new 245s seemed to basically take this model and make it slightly thinner, but it's basically the same performance. Feels like Mizuno fell behind on a lot of the marketing done by TM and Titleist, but they continued silently making the best forged irons and evolved the process. Think I'm going to go get me 225s since the price of these will drop, but it seems to me one of the most underutilized irons low handicappers aren't adjusting to.

These Mizuno's are very nice clubs but $1500+ a set is to steep for many avid amatuer golfers😳! Love to have a set but not at that price. Good job guys on your review! 👍

I want to switch from the JPX921 Hot Metal Pro to these. Would that be a good choice??

Have you done a comparison of the Mizuno 225 versus the Rogue ST Pro? Would love to see that

As a high single digit handicapper who plays enough to just about keep the rust off. This is exactly what I would be shopping for.

I’m a scratch golfer, game these. Trust me these are incredible. The only issue I have is they’re bloody hot. I had my lofts weaker I game 225 4 to 7 iron 221 8 to PW. Best MP mizunos ever.

How would someone pair a set of wedges with these given how far they carry. I play the mp20 mmc and my PW carry about 134 so I would image being in the 40’s with these. That just seems like it would create a larger gap with the wedges

Need to see the 225 vs the new cobra forged tec irons !!!
@DavidSmith-mo2qz2 жыл бұрын
I adore these irons. They look very much like blades, but give you the benefit of hollow body construction. Just placed my order for 5-PW. Now have to decide on wedges - Miura maybe :)

Could you do a direct comparison between the 225 and the HMB? Not everyone wants a smaller club head

It'd be a good informative comparison to have a mid & high handicapped player having a go at the Mizuno range.

I feel this sense of... Depression.. When there is more than a week no new TXG videos. I find myself hunting KZbin like revisiting the refrigerator without finding what I'm truly wanting...... Desperate for the sweet taste of golf equipment and science

I tested the original P790 and ended up going with the JPX forged. Couldn't figure out how to deal with gapping when hitting a 7 iron 210 yards, assuming that the distance would hold through the set. Would have hit the 4 iron past my hybrid and would have had about a 50 yard gap between the approach wedge and pitching wedge. The distance and feel of the 790 was absolutely amazing though, and assuming the Mizuno is as good or better.

Play MP20 blades through 4 iron. Liked the HMB’s performance but could not get over how they looked. Really interested in getting the 225’s 5-3 and adjusting lofts for gapping. Can’t see the 221’s being so different in numbers over a year to justify a full swap.

I’m curious as to how/why you gain more ball speed, but same distance-normalized? I would have guessed more ball speed = more distance. Is it speed, apex, ??? Cheers fellas from NorCal and the drizzle of rain. We need it, but it’s interfering with my play 😁

Is a Mizuno 225 vs Titleist T100S comparison something we can expect, guys?

I bought a Srixon driving iron 2iron 18 degrees , I think I am going to go a 225 2iron with 16.5 loft as my driving iron, I am hoping that it goes as good as it looks.

I like the idea of a 225 or a P790 but my worry is in actual play what happens with the "flier" lie. The change in spin can be much more drastic from a more traditional iron, hence why the 221 and 223 exit. I tried to go for the more "poppy" iron and found due to playing lies my distance control could vary drastically, so came back in to the more traditional MP series. If Ian does put them in the bag would be interesting to hear his views and results but then again, does he miss a fairway!

Test the Mizuno Pro 225 vs Taylormade P-770 please..
@nickhaslam32533 жыл бұрын
Very interesting that you talked about bending them a bit weaker. You could be setting them up like a P770. How you’ll you compare them to 770? Are you going to do a comparison? Three way, p790, p770 and 225. Do it please

ohhh, would three-ways.

50 yard gap between PW and 7i doesn't strike me as a good thing - but otherwise I like what I'm seeing here.
@ArmyGolfBC3 жыл бұрын
5* loft gaps from GW to 7i, and then 3* gaps the rest of the way - I just can't wrap my head around why that's a good idea or which golfer that benefits.

What impresses me the most about the 225 is there’s nothing added in the hollow body like all the other ones and yet it sounds and feels better the other hollow body irons .
