With the leg coming out on the jump shot can be explained. The leg coming out is a range of motion used for balance. Its like the kickstand on a bike. It flips outwardly at a slant so as to give the bike a range of balance when in a standing still position away from its center of gravity. If the bike stood upright it could easily be affected by gravity falling to either the left or right. With the kickstand keeping the bike at an angle it can fix a position securing it for stability. Same with the kick out of the leg. its all about positioning and stability. Other players who also use this method includes Grant Hill, Latrell Spreewell even Pippen himself at times used this method.

The reason why MJ and Kobe have their knees cave in for some shots is to create more distance/separation from the defender with the overextended pivot leg, which forces the non pivot leg to overcompensate to stabilize the center of gravity. It's actually super subtle. Notice how his pivot leg is always at an acute angle to the ground when he plants his pivot foot-- it's simple geometry, the more parallel his pivot leg is to the ground, the further away he can land away from the defender, and the non pivot knee caving in is just to compensate.

There is a clear difference between these two athletes. Michael Jordan was clearly the better player of the two, and is hands down the most skilled player to have ever played the game. He did not have to work as hard as Kobe to take shots . His knowledge of the game and positioning mastery were next level. The only thing Kobe had on Michael was shooting the three but I look at that as a weakness for Kobe not a strength because Michael was just better at getting better shots and positioning. I think in their primes Michael wins against Kobe 95% of the time. Remember Kobe was competing with Michael well past his prime and Michael was still winning championships. It wasn’t until Michael was way over the hill that Kobe was able to beat him. In their primes no way that would happen period.
