Just before Inside Out 2 released, Pixar director Pete Docter said they were going to get away from telling personal stories to focus on sequels, spin offs and movies with a wide appeal. This can be concerning because they've already more or less run some of their other franchises into the ground and that's not what we as fans want to see from the company. However, Inside Out 2 ended up being a huge hit for Pixar and imo one that in many ways proves Docter wrong as it was based on the director's experiences with his daughter. Can Pixar retain their magic and keep this momentum going, or will they over rely on nostalgia bait and lose control of their momentum. After all, Lightyear was a spin off and that didn't work out for them.

As a mixed-race person, this is so frustrating. Especially within the media; roles usually call for a POC or a white person, and while mixed-race roles are increasing (though Asha, Mirabel, and Hiro are the only multiracial leads I can think of for Disney movies), being told that your race isn't enough to promote the self-congratulatory optics of diversity is frustrating--and even worse when having discussions about it and then being told "hey, you're only half/part (this race), so your opinion is invalidated."

My explanation for why the parents don't have the other emotions is that the reason that Riley has them in the main office, is that she is a teenager. She isn't developed yet, her mindscape is still building out, changing and evolving. Aka, all of the emotions, negative and positive, are situated in one place at one time and all vying for control. With anxiety being such a control freak, due to teenagers usually falling prey to anxiety, and having it take control over their life (and bottling up emotions). The parents in their adult minds, are way more structured. I imagine that if we were to expand them out a bit, we would see the parents minds as "ranked offices" if that makes sense? The core emotions in the main office, and branching out to the other ones, ranked dependant on how strong they are within said individual. that is why we find that the dad still has anxiety in his main office, as he maybe struggled (and still do) with it in the past, so anxiety is around the corner. That is just my interpretation of course, it is more liekly they didn't think about it that well.

We already seeing rooms are developing in Riley's mind with Nostalgia being kept in a new waiting room because Riley's still too young for Nostalgia to play any significant part, the parents' Anxieties showed up as if they operate on another sector and just came in like an employee talking to their superior at their office

I watched Inside Out 2 in theaters with my nephews and niece. I enjoyed it, despite the cringe of accurate teenager behavior aside. I will say that I don’t know if I agree with you viewing Joy as the the only “positive” emotion compared to the rest because it’s less about which is a positive or negative emotion to have but rather what emotion is needed for a specific moment. Anger is for expressing injustice, fear and disgust keeps you safe physically and socially. Plus the reason for Saddness was the whole point of the first movie because they aren’t necessarily bad emotions to have as long as they aren’t overindulged.

So even though the others aren't present in the parents minds, they're still around.

I don't think the personal stories are so much the problem as much as who those personal stories belong to. It's tough to admit but not everyone's personal experiences are particularly engaging or exciting to watch, and when they're being told by people that might care more about it reflecting their own perspectives rather than using their experiences as a vehicle for an original narrative it can come across as fairly boring or even annoying and self indulgent. Everyone might have some stories to tell but not everyone has an exciting life. That's just how it is.

Surprising to learn about that behind the scenes "no promoting/hiring white dudes" bit. Well not SURPRISING, all things considered, but y'know what i mean. But yeah with the "personal vs generalized story" thing. I guess as Inside out shows, the key is a balance, but for the ones that do lean more towards personal, maybe they should lower expectations and understand they'll likely only be really impacting a relatively nicher audience, idk. Like, i dont NEED every piece of entertainment to be a relatable parallel to my own personal life, but at the same time I'm not going to go out of my way to watch like, Turning Red as someone that isn't an Asian Canadian girl going through puberty or whatever its about. And from what i hear Turning Red doesn't really have a hook beyond conveying that specific experience. So it comes back again to what you mentioned about striking a good balance and incorporating personal experience well into the writing, or maybe just leaving it as an inspiration and not making it the plot in and of itself. Idk.

A really good fan explanation on why the new emotions aren't present in the adults is because unlike Riley, they have learnt how to control and decide their emotions, all the core members on the control panel aren't a complete stereotypical representation of that emotion, instead all complementing each other. Anxiety and the others is present in their minds, but they take a backseat and don't hold much power and control over their actions. But that's a fan fix for this particular plot hole, lets be honest pixar probably didn't think that far ahead for a sequel to a movie they made 9 years ago

I really liked Inside Out 2, I thought the new emotions were interesting and voiced well, especially Anxiety, who I thought was a good antagonistic figure for the movie. I also thought the new cast for some of the old characters did a good job sliding right in for the others and in some case doing better. I also like that this was a sequel that didn't destroy continuity or character development like many others do and it also felt like a sequel that deserved to be made, because the human mind is constantly evolving, even long after the brain stops growing, so this allows a lot of wiggle room for a sequel to be made, and I think focusing on one of the most turbulent times for one's life. The step backs this movie takes for me is that I wish they did more with Riley and the others, as in more scenes with the human characters, and I felt that the concept of puberty starting to change Riley felt a tad underutilized. But my absolute favorite parts of the movie include Joy saying maybe this is what happens, you feel less joy when you grow up, the I'm not good enough sense of self kicking in, the 1984 reference with the imagination land, the anxiety attack scene, and the mixed sense of self being created. Overall I think this is a great movie, and one that I really resonate with watching it as an adult.

Technically, it's a more nuanced perspective on the first movie. The first movie focuses on "not everything is about being happy," and you can take that lesson and go. I saw the newer movie like how you'd write an argumentative essay. You reassert the previous points while adding nuance through counter-argument. It also sprinkles in more relevant things with how we grow. When you get older, you have to get more serious, and you "feel less joy," as Joy says in the climax. The "losing your sense of self" thing also applies. It's a similar thing and point, but the context that surrounds it makes the story more compelling. But that's just my opinion.

I just went to see Inside Out 2 the other day and I adored it! As a teen that is currently navigating puberty this was extremely relatable, and in my opinion, an even better movie than the first one - though I might just think that because I haven't seen Inside Out 1 in a while. Also my personal head cannon as to why the cast of emotions from the sequel aren't present in the parent's brain for most of the second movie and the whole first movie is because when kids get to adolescence their emotions become more complex and diverse (creating the new characters we see in Riley's head), and because that change is sudden they juggle all these emotions at once not really knowing how to handle them, but as they get older they learn to control these secondary emotions that were seen in the second movie thus the emotions becoming less used and therefore only popping up at headquarters occasionally (as seen in the case of Riley's parents).

I feel-no believe-that Disney and Pixar will take the wrong lesson of the success of Inside Out 2 and think the audiences wants more sequels instead of original movies. Not seeing that no one wants any more sequels to pre-existing movies like Frozen 3 & 4 as a huge example. And it’s sad that when they do make an original film, the story doesn’t feel like how Disney use to be before their pandering

Agree with you 100% on that last point. I'm not saying that it wouldn't be cool for her to cameo in another film/series, but Pixar gave Riley an emotionally beautiful ending, let her story end there.

I was 6 days too late to watch the English version of the movie (in theatres) so I had to watch Inside out 2 in a language that I did not understand. I tried to understand what was happening via the snippets of the movie that I had seen on yt before hand, and the vibes of the scene. I definitely missed a lot of the movie but it was enough to quell my curiosity.

So Inside out 2 was a good movie with a good story and it's doing well at the box office......What a twist. No its just par for the course. People will go out to see a good movie. Movie theaters will sell out these days if they have a anime movie feature. Plus they've been doing box office classics.

I really liked Inside out 2, it had me balling when her new sense of self had conflicting thoughts. But I disagree with what you said in 5:30 The entire point of Inside Out is that no emotions are "negative." Heck in the very first scene we see anger motivate Riley to score a goal, fear remind her to wear a mouth guard, and disgust stop her from using someone else's own. Even anxiety was only negative because she put wayy too much pressure on Riley, when she should've simply been a voice of caution to potential future events. Our emotions are neither positive or negative, it's letting them determine our actions that can have positive or negative effects on our lives.

I am starting to think who ever is running Disney now is doing all it can to watch it crumble. Like they have a personal reason to watch them fumble and die out. I don't know. I just think its ridiculous how they went from "Keep Moving Forward" to "Oh we cant hurt anyone's feelings."

I agree with most of this, except I personally didn't have a problem with how envy was used because I think that's the intention. Like envy was a lot more subtle, she'd often fuel anxiety (E.g. Like with the notebook, she'd bounce off of anxiety and just make her worry even more) and I think that's more realistic - feelings of envy are often subtle, and I like the way that her effect on Riley was more subtle in that she'd just feed into anxiety's anxiety.

5:32 I wouldn't say they were all negative: Envy was portrayed much more as Admiration/Determination/Desire. Whenever Envy was using the console Riley was never shown being envious of others, rather she was desiring or admiring something. I'd say if Envy and Anger made a mixed memory THAT would be a true envy

I honestly loved the movie, it expanded greatly upon the original movies concepts, and I loved the progress of Riley coming into her own more not letting her emotions control her as much anymore and allow her to make her own choices. The Original had some too but not as much the most definite being Anger saying “She took it” after giving Riley the idea of running away showing the ultimately Riley has final say on all choices she makes

Inside out 2 was a okay film that had it’s flaws and straights, but I understand what your saying it felt like it wasn’t weighted down by disneys political, progressive or corporate side and felt rather genuine despite me not being a fan of the new emotions and etc. And in general i think Disney's gonna eat well especially with deadpool, Moana 2 and mufasa. Tho I hope they learn something from this and don’t pump out sequels that Pete doctor was eluding too.

To comment on this first, I have NOT seen the movie, this is just an observation from snippets Ive seen so far & thoughts that remained from the first movie. The thing with sequels, at least for me, is that I wish for more of a setup. As you said, suddenly having new emotions join is fine BUT there was no setup for them, at least not that I remember. Not even a sign that any of the grown adults had them before this movie, which is odd to me. And its also kinda odd, to me at least, to have emotions join in relatively late and take over entirely. Especially since its a) only negative emotions and b) they join in at an age where, surely, those emotions have been experienced before like idk, a child being anxious and crying because their mum walked away with the shopping kart while they were stuck looking at toys or something. It feels like this is a sequel that wasnt planned too well ahead. At least not in terms of core emotions. I mean it couldve taken away from the whole new reveal of "ohhhh new emotion" but technically you couldve just introduced more emotions to begin with and then showed how they slowly unlock in Rileys brain, what caused them to appear, the first memory theyre in etc. You couldve still gone with the different lifephases thing we have rn but you couldve also added the thought of "oh, I wonder which emotion will unlock for her next and how big of a role will they play". And diving deeper into that, you couldve made the main brain part a bit more buzzing with different emotions that all do their part and who, every now and then, decide who gets to be the idk, top5 emotions. And make those top emotions different for people over the years and based on personality. You could even go as far as do awareness stuff with anxiety, sadness etc being the main emotions of someone depressed and how more memories with joy could raise joys popularity so that they could then be a top emotion again, just as they were when they were a child etc and have that be a big plot point. Idk, just throwing thoughts at a wall here.

The pandemic has had many after-effects, especially in the Entertainment industry. Because no one could come to the movie theaters and the many streaming services, there are not many people who really go to the movies anymore. The gaming industry is doing even worse but in a different way the Pandemic actually made gaming grow but it happened so fast that game companies not called Nintendo couldn't keep up with the Demand for video games and now almost all video games are Unfinished and are way too expensive to make and take far too long to make

Actually Nostalgia is also a positive emotion but u fortunately she was one that was shelved. Had she been involved in this movie more, the second film would’ve been avoided all together since Riley would’ve been too melancholy to desert her friends. I wouldn’t say all the other emotions are all negative either, a couple of them are more neutral. Plus you could say that a couple of the emotions can be known by multiple names like Ennui who is also known by Boredom. Kind of like how Envy could also be known as Ambition. I’d say sadness is a neutral emotion as well.

I've been in the cinema for inside out 2 and I quite enjoyed it, even if I expected some very different scenarios with the new emotions. Also I think there's some lost potential here on "becoming a woman", which as we all know, messes up our emotions a hella lot. That would've been interesting to watch as well but yeah, too gross for the young audience I guess. A shame. On the other hand the yellow bag was waaaay too cringe for us adult audience 😂 But all in all the movie was great. I'm curious if we see her again or if Rileys Story ends in puberty already. Which would also be a great shame. And disney... once upon a time bigD was a major reason for me to go to cinema. But that's been long gone. It's so sad watch them greeding and killing all emotions and stories for money only. Also they don't understand today's society at all... it's not only about being a strong independent woman. We can have love interests, we can be weak and rely on guys sometimes. And we're not akorable (at least not everyone). The only thing that needed some upgrades in original Disney films was the "oh I met a prince, lets marry him! Bc that's my only purpose in life" mindset the old movies often carried. It got better over time but now D is as lost as never before, at least imo.

I'm not really a huge fan of the original Inside Out and y'know what? I'm actually glad that people seem to be saying the sequel is good and actually worth watching. Pixar as of late hasn't really had the best track record with movies, let alone sequels. Incredibles 2 comes to mind as I find that to be probably one of the biggest failures that pixar has made. Sure, other movies were received better, but Incredibles 2 has FAR less excuses for it to be bad.
