Bruce Hornsby is there for sure, he did interpolate a song Bruce's on Many Times, and kind of adjacent, Bruce is Justin Vernon's biggest inspo and has worked with him a bunch. It's a Bon Iver family tree. I hear everything you listed, plus prince, but then like Jamie XX too? lol

and definitely some John Martyn

@@samthomas1360 I hear Martyn in the guitar work as well. I feel like a lot of the stuff we're talking about all traces back to Martyn simply bringing these types of effects and songwriting into the folk guitar fold.

@@BroadcastsFromPoorFarm The beauty, for me, is that while the sound is attached to developed genres, his interpretation of these sounds is so refreshing. The hardest thing to do in any medium of art is make something new. Standing on the shoulders of inspiration, while only doing that, too many derivatives of stuff, it's easier. For me, an artist always gets put in a special category when you could pluck them out of a crowd just by their "tone/sound/instrumentation, etc.."

@@alexanderhanhardt9752 I mostly come from the community people tend to call american primitive guitar. Which when you boil it down, is essentially built on derivation, typically in a celebrated way ... for the most part. There are people that complain about players who use the same structures or progressions, but I don't think that is necessarily the point with a lot this kind of stuff. What I usually gravitate the most towards are players who take these pre-existing puzzle pieces and translate them through their own stories. When they can make it a personal thing, and do it really well, players like Jack Rose for example, you can pick them out by their tone like you said. For me, it’s less about inventing a new letter than it is saying something about yourself in a familiar way. I tend to feel that being obsessively concerned about innovation is as annoying as someone who is a strict traditionalist. I’d rather just pay attention to the voice and deciding whether it’s something worth listening to.
