A couple observations for those of you who will be doing this job in the future... too late for the O.P. though: 1. If you don't clamp this in a vice while dis- and re-assembling the unit you are asking for trouble. Have you ever run a screwdriver through your hand while working like that? SO MUCH EASIER and SAFER to do this kind of work with a vice holding your work. Use wooden or plastic jaws on the vice so that you don't mar the surface of the aluminum. 2. Always use the RIGHT SIZE screwdriver! That way you won't be as likely to slip and bugger up the screw heads as the O.P. did. Don't use some worn out piece of crap. 3. Remove the clip from the connector and remove the connector with the wires and set the bottom half aside. That way you don't need to keep twisting those wires all around. There's a new seal for the connector in the kit so you're eventually going to take it apart anyway. 4. When re-assembling the diaphragm, you've got new screws in the kit so go ahead and cut the heads off two of the old screws, thread them in, and use them as guides to hold the parts while you reassemble the metal diaphragm and the plastic cover.

Hello Sir Thank you for showing us how to repair these parts, which sometimes give us so many headaches. It demonstrates the dedication, pleasure and a lot of patience with these magnificent cars. I have a golf Gti mk1 with a 1.8 16v engine and I'm going to try to do the same because it's getting bumpy on the cold start. greetings from Portugal Mário

Quick question... why are you running the engine without the upper timing belt cover installed? Not that it's really an issue, but just wondering why?
@ShinyFastLoud2 жыл бұрын
Because the one the car came with was in rough shape. I actually have a new one I will be refinishing and installing when I redo the timing belt…..I will be posting soon.

Thanks for the vid. Did it no problem, but I lost the damn little black cap. Any suggestion for an alternative?

not really....if I come across a good alternative I'll post it

The little black looks to be about the same size as on the back of the radiator fan,also on some 020 manual transmissions.

Man I got this kit and the screws to reassemble it are too short that came with the kit. Any leads on where to find a suitable replacement?
@ShinyFastLoud2 жыл бұрын
have you tried a local hardware store?
@nitemareglitch2 жыл бұрын
@@ShinyFastLoud That is exactly what I did. Only stainless and no zinc coated though.

Not dramtically, but I am systematically going through the car so it was worth doing in my opionion.
