Mk4 Volkswagen Golf GTI Coolant Reservoir Replacement DIY (1998-2006 VW Beetle, Jetta, Golf)

►The Mk4 VW Golf GTI coolant reservoir is like any other coolant reservoir in that over time, the plastic ages and degrades due to heat. Look inside any older car's engine bay, and you're likely to see an aged yellow coolant reservoir.
If your coolant reservoir is yellowed like the one shown in this video, you should, at the minimum, inspect it. As the plastic ages, it becomes brittle and prone to cracks. Due to the pressure these are under, they are especially prone to cracking as they get up there in age. Failure of the reservoir will mean loss of coolant, air in your system, and the potential for your engine to overheat.
In this DIY, Jay Van Gorden demonstrates how to replace the coolant reservoir on Jamie Orr's Mk4 Golf GTI. However, this DIY applies to any Mk4 chassis Volkswagen.

So if I don't have the vacuum cooler I can use 50/50 water and coolant ??

Too much coolant left in the bottle, though I’m sure you guys know, but others following may not, despite the level indicator on the bottle. Also, you can change the coolant bottle without dropping or loosing any coolant and without having to bleed the system.

You can indeed pinch the lines and empty the bottle and replace Mr VRS! And correct in that we could have sucked out a bit of the extra coolant after vacuum ffilling.

FWIW, I did it without even pinching the lines. The top line is empty when engine not running and can be removed without leaking. The bottom line won't drain if it's above the original fluid level, so I just 1. Removed top line, the electrical plug and the two screws holding the reservoir in (don't drop em). 2. Lifted it up and tilted it back (with cap on and coolant still in it) until the big hose was above the original coolant level.. 3. Removed the clamp on the big hose. 4. Got the new reservoir ready.. 5. Slide the hose off the old reservoir continuing to hold the hose high, and set the old reservoir aside still on its back (just nestled in engine bay).. 6. Attach the new reservoir to the hose, re-apply the clamp. 7. Put the new reservoir back into its place, then pick up the old one and align the bottom bottom opening over the new reservoir, and tilt it back upright to drain coolant from old to new. 8. Reattach upper line and clamp, electrical plug, put two screws in.. check coolant level.. done. Took longer to type this than to do the job..

Trying to figure out if the expansion tank cap requires an o'ring

Yes, so don't torque the cap on. The cap snaps when it is fully turned to the closed position after about 2-3 turns I think. Also wet the o-ring or filler neck with some coolant to make it easier to tighten the cap back on and provide a better seal.
