Hi Alan. I modified a 18mm impact socket so it fits in the hole on the top of mount but I ground 2 flats onto its sides and use a 20mm open end spanner to loosen the nut while the Allen key fits down the usual 1/2 inch hole to hold the shock absorber. Made a set to cover various cars where you can't get a spanner in there. Saves the mole grip trick. However if you do have to use grips I put Emery cloth between the jaws and it grips better with less pressure. Hope thats of some use to your viewers.

hi, thats really clever and interesting, if i ever get the time i may just make that but i sure someone else will follow up on your mod, anyway, thanks
@Grinder-one3 жыл бұрын
As an extra precaution, you can insert a piece of rubber fabric in the teeth of the mole grips. Wish I had one of those spring compressor machines, my compressors scare the life out of me....I normally strap the spring aswell, just incase. I think I remember you saying you've never had to change a spring on a MK4 either Alan, which is good news for me as I've just recently bought one....I had to do the job 5 times on my MK3 and there's only 4 on um. lol :)

I had a similar problem a few years back,when someone crashed into the wheel of my car,had to replace everything on that corner. Just a small bit of damage to a component can make a huge difference to how everything sits.

Any chance of a video about a MKV Mondeo where you restore that new car feeling by replacing any bushes etc to achieve that?
@christiankelly19814 жыл бұрын
I'm only a home mechanic but maybe the strut mount at the top on the actual car where the three 10mm bolts hold the shock could of bent. If it has going by where the shock bolts to the hub it would pull the hub in at the top
@alan4x4 жыл бұрын
i hope not as i won't be able to straighten that out, i am hoping at worst the subframe is slightly bent
@christiankelly19814 жыл бұрын
@@alan4x that strut mount in the engine bay doesn't look bent but if it is it would be hard do see without taking measurements of the hole centres to a fixed point and compare it to the drivers side. I'm thinking if the subframe is bent where the control arm mounts the wheel would be off the opposite way from what it is ie out at the top and in at the bottom.

I dont get it I was hit emerging on the drivers wing by a Zafira doing about 30mph the car still drove fine but both wings seem to be out of line about 1cm but the bonnet remained straight despite not looking too worse for wear it was written off, these cars certainly stand up in accidents there's no doubt about it.

Hope the boss recovers damages on that one. Ouch. Do you have compulsory third party in the UK?
@marklittler7844 жыл бұрын
Certainly do, though apparently generally because there's more competition in the comprehensive car insurance market comprehensive can actually be cheaper than third party to my surprise, though third party doesn't have an excess. I was caught out getting third party quotes not realising comprehensive can be cheaper, though with taxis third party is probably cheaper but I think the car has to be valued less than £5000
