To be clear, open back headphones are not intended to let other sounds in. They are intended to make the audio of your headphones sound more natural, like the sources of audio are coming from the space around you, instead of two small transducers by your ears. Don't spend big money when you're buying open backs if you only need the transparency for outside sound. And if it needs to be said, ambient noise passthrough features of sealed headphones do not accomplish what open back headphones do with "moving" the sound away from the transducers.

I’m surprised there was no mention of the sound difference between closed and open cans relative to soundstage and open sound. "Open back" headphone refers to the back of the driver's membrane. It's not enclosed, so it does not have to compress air within a closed volume, which reduces distortions. With the effect, that sound spills out for others to hear. Having a free floating driver in a closed case with distance to the ear and no cushioning around it still doesn't make it an open headphone.

@romanr9883Күн бұрын
@@parato54 That’s not the point. Sure, you can use an Apple Watch when diving, but claiming that this is what it was originally meant for is still wrong. These headphones are open to prevent resonance buildup in the ear and therefore create a more natural and clear sound (not better per se, but closer to the original sound, as if in an open environment). Therefore, they are good for sound mixing, mastering, or even gaming to improve spatial awareness in competitive games. Naturally, these benefits are most pronounced in very quiet environments with no ambient noise. Now, can you use them the way you and MKBH described? Of course. But that’s not their primary purpose, and presenting them in that way is wrong. And that’s sad for a tech KZbinr, because most people watching this will never know. Now, whenever they see one of these, they’ll think, “Oh, these are good for working in the office or walking through the streets, because…”
@JeffSmith_Күн бұрын
That might be what the headphones are meant for, but that doesn't mean people use them that way. MKBHD explained his use case and offered his opinions on that use case. Like MKBHD, there are people who buy open headphones for office/noisy settings. This video is for them. This is not a video going into the science or purpose behind open headphones. Edit: All the headphones he reviewed (except for the last one, which isn't out yet) literally mention the transparency in their one paragraph marketing blurb and most have photos of them being used in a work setting. The only headphone he mentioned that does mention soundstage on their website is his daily driver Sennheiser HD650, but he didn't review those.

One good reason to go with headphones that don’t physically isolate is comfort. Things like transparency mode and noise canceling put constant pressure on your ear drums… the only tool they have to simulate either quiet or the sound around you is blasting your ear with noise (even if it’s inverted so as to cancel out perceived sound). Personally, I find it fatiguing; a few minutes of using the newest airpods in a noisy environment makes me feel like I’m climbing in a pressurized airplane cabin. Having tinnitus makes it worse. It feels very weird to have “silence” trigger ringing in your ear.
@ChizFreak3 сағат бұрын
Open-back headphones are not for also ''hearing the sounds of your environment''! Open-back headphones are used by audio engineers (like mixing engineers) and producers because they give a more accurate representation of the stereo field and frequency balance of your sound. Headphones don't exist for the sole purpose of ''not bothering others with your sounds'' but also to listen closely to some details and are often used in combination with professional speakers by audio engineers to make sure the sound is perfect. The main purpose of open-back headphones is not to ''hear the outside in case someone talks to you'' or whatever, it's to combat the boomy ''headphone effect'' that closed-back headphones have changing the stereo soundscape completely (so you don't an appropriate representation of the stereo field of your sounds) and boosting low frequencies because of being closed (so not giving an appropriate representation of the frequency balance of your sounds). That's why the exist, to avoid that detrimental headphone effect, and nothing else, really. An extra bit of information I will add is that open-back headphones because of this very reason are excellent for Gaming because the more accurate soundscape let's you hear better where sounds are coming from within the game world, but gamers often use closed-back headphones because it's assumed they only use headphones to ''not bother other people with their loud gaming sounds''. Finally, I don't know why he said they are uncommon or something, they have existed for a very long time and there lots of consumer-grade open-back headphones. I will admit that open-back EARphones are rarer though, but that's because it's a non-sense product, if you want something portable then you would inherently want it to be closed-back as to not bother people as you move around, and if you don't have other people to worry about then full-on headphones are always better than earphones. To be honest all the open-back earphones/headphones reviewed here seem like marketing gimmicks designed to look flashy rather than be functional and of high quality. High quality usual open-back headphones look almost the same as normal headphones aesthetically, these companies are making them look weird just to point at them and ''SEE? THEY ARE OPEN!!!" as a marketing strategy. Source: I'm a music producer. But you can literally ask any competent professional audio engineer and they will tell you the same as of why they exist.

The best use case scenario I can think of are the bose clip style ones in the gym. It can't get more practical than that in the gym, because: 1. Even with transparency mode on your regular earphones, the person who approaches you for asking how many sets you have etc, will not be knowing you have transparency mode on and will still have to signal/tap you to make sure u can hear what they're saying 2. The clip style grip won't make you feel like you are clogging your earphones with sweat, and in the case that you are getting them dirty, you won't have to worry much because you're not getting your primary ones dirty

I think if I am not wrong NONE of the products shown are open back. These products just place their drivers a little bit away from the ear with no acoustic treatment, but still all these drivers are closed back (driver housing is closed from back). They should advertise these products as passive transparency earphones or headphones, unlike active transparency in Airpods and Galaxy Buds which consume battery for such features. These products complements battery life in certain use cases much better. Situations where one always puts their AirPods in transparency which in turns brings less playback time and consume more battery.

Open back reference headphones are for sound staging and balance, not for noise transparency. Link buds, mf5, etc are not “open backs” in the same way as hd650s/600s, akg 702s, or other comparable cans. It is usually NOT a selling point for open backs to be used in the workplace or cohabited spaces because sound will leak out at high volumes and potentially disturb coworkers and people around you (especially for editing where you’re likely re-listening to chunks of audio multiple times repetitively). Btw - yes i guess it’s easier to hear through open backs then noise cancelled headphones obviously, but you must be editing audio at a very low volume for people to just come up to you and start a conversation without needing to get your attention.

look at nothing-sony marketing for their open earbuds and you will know its not for soundstage
@NabPunkКүн бұрын
@@ich_16 That's exactly what he said, they are not open-back. I can see the earbuds being useful for people who wear them while commuting where they cross roads and such and need to be a bit more aware of their surroundings. I still won't recommend listening to music while walking around town though.

I'm not sure if it's intended of not, but either way, some earbuds have a feature that can detect near the ear touches and map those to specific actions. Example, Samsung have this feature enabled on their earbuds to increase/decrease the sound volume.

FYI for those of you who have a hard time with ear buds staying in your ears. I've tried like 10 different brands and no luck. I got the nothing open ear ones and they've been great! Very comfortable, great battery life, good sound quality. The design makes it so they don't fall of your head and the band is flexible and soft. The drivers do float in front of your ear and can wiggle but they've never touched my ear while I'm being active. I've tried the Beats version that does have an earbud seal but these have been more comfortable. Only gripe is that in loud environments they don't get loud enough to combat the external noise. But it's fine in most cases.

Look into getting yourself some custom ear-moulds. It's pretty common for musicians, motorcyclists, or people with hearing aids. It's quite a weird experience, but not unpleasant. And it's not that expensive.

what ended up working for me after trying a number of different earbuds and none of them staying in my ear no matter what I tried and adjusted was just buying a $20 pair at a walmart register. They hold in my ear better than anything 've spent up to $120 for and don't sound half bad.

These are great for someone (me) who loves driving a convertible with the top down, who loves loud music, but is self-conscious about blasting music from the car, but also doesn't want to wear headphones so they can still hear the surroundings. I found neck speakers are a surprisingly good alternative. Sounds pretty good and you feel the bass on your shoulders.

I think marques misses the point of open back headphones. They are not analog transparency mode. They sound better than closed backs because the sound is not squished into your ears, it floats around your ear so the layering in the sound is much better. Thát is the function of open backs, not transparency.

I think you answered your own question about why the NWM headphones can tilt backwards. For people wearing behind the ear hearing aids, the microphones are on the device behind the ear, this backward tilt would point the sound at approximately the location that would be best for these hearing aids! How great is that?!

The quality of subtitles keeps getting worse every video. idk if this is AI generated subtitles, what Marques talks about on Waveform Podcast and savings that $50 for the quality. I love this channel, especially because of the quality of the videos, and seeing cost cutting of $50 over quality is unjustified, hope Team Studio sees this.

I think trasparency in open an headphone is a marginal feature. I use HD650 as well from years at home, I don't use them "because I want trasparency". I use them because I wanna hear music at VERY GOOD quality without spending thousands of Euro on an hifi system, or having to deal with neighbors. Because I like the sound more, and they have an incredible sound stage, and they are way less fatiguing than closed headphones over long sessions. It's definitely not a pair of headphones to wear in an open enviroments, mostly because people around you will hear everything.
