That's not entirely true. While he is not as OP as Brawl Meta Knight or Smash 4 Bayo, he is still a very unbalanced fighter, and easily the best character Ultimate bar none, only being rivaled by Sonic (who is a whole other ball game.... no pun intended). Steve is a broken character not because he has strong options, but because he has no proper means of being effectively countered for the majority of the roster. He forces the opponent to play on his terms, and then he proceeds to stack the odds in his favor to checkmate you in a plethora of "damned if you do, damned if you don't" situations. Steve mining behind a wall in neutral is a prime example of this. I could go on and on about this, but the point is... despite it sounding like a bunch of baseless complaining from salty players (which some of it is), Steve sadly is an objectively overpowered (or at least severely over-tuned) character that does break the fundamentals of competitive Smash and is extremely toxic to fight, especially when played optimally. And while counterplay has been slowly but surely developed for Steve, the matchup is still extremely rough (if not borderline impossible) for 70% of the roster.

If you look around everything points at Meta Knight being one of the best characters in the game but not a lot of people play him for a number of reasons. I would love to see more MK mains and MK secondary's

You know to balance Steve his shield could be directional. Like the player has to press the direction they want to shield in

It doesn't really address any of his problems though. Anvil is an insane down air because it's fast and it kills extremely early because you can never tell which direction it'll send you so your di is pretty much 50/50 add on to the fact it does a huge amount of shield damage so you may be forced to let go of shield before the second hit to ensure you don't get shield broken so steve can make an opponent option select from just 1 move that costs 2 iron blocks. It either needs to cost 3 iron blocks or it's values needs to be tuned down Minecart is also really good because not only is it a zoning tool it also helps with steves poor movement and it can serve as a disjointed grapple as it can grab people out of shield. You have to guess whether steve will jump out early, late, or whether he'll stay inside. It also technically doesn't follow minecraft rules as when steve was released minecarts did not preserve their momentum when launched off of a ramp or midair, they just dropped. Then his blocks, steve's blocks force people to break them and if you just have stone which is 1 level higher than dirt then it takes 2 or even 3 attacks to break through depending on your character and during it all he'll be mining away increasing his power through mining stone, iron, diamond and redstone and for a mixup he can even try to hit you through them. To add onto that he can place his blocks midair for gimps, as a wall for him to tech off of, to provide him a way to extend combos that reach up to 50% to 70% that only characters that were meant to perform combos could reach on their own. Now for characters with a resource/s they are most weakest when they spawn. Except steve because steve spawns with resources and steves will very likely just go to a corner, build a wall and mine and to add insult to injury special resoruces like diamond, gold and redstone do not disappear on death so steve is always strongest on his last stock as he'll get the diamond by then and diamond is insanely strong. Giving him a directional shield just makes him annoying to play and he'd still be frustrating to play against. I think the easiest nerf to him would be to make it so that blocks couldn't be placed midair that instantly nerfs half his damage potential and also keeps it closer to his source material.

@@Isun-u1qBlocks need a significant nerf to their health. They can last as long as they do, but dirt takes 8%, wood 16%, stone 24%, and iron 32% before breaking. That’s obscene. Dirt should have a health of 2%, Wood 6%, Stone 10%, Iron 16%. They are too defensive of a tool. Steve also shouldn’t keep inventory upon revive, should start with no tools, and Minecart and anvil should be retuned

Everyone else got better more or less, his Byleth isn't as good as it used to be because everybody knows how to fight a byleth now. So his Byleth is used for counterpicking but that's getting pretty rare, Umebura is the first time in a while that I saw his Byleth. Min Min started appearing more as Japanese players started going international and very few of Leo's characters can go up against the Min Mins Actually, Leo picked up Meta Knight back then to counterpick Protobanham but then Proto retired so he never really got to use it much until a couple months back. His Joker is still pretty godly but it doesn't do too well against steve. Actually a while back his Joker was supremely rusty and he used Byleth more, but it seems like he got his groove with Joker and goshdang it's insanely fun to watch just like back in the good old days. MKLeo hasn't retired but he didn't compete as much for most of last year and he was focusing on family and the businesses he invested in. Earlier this year it seems that his 25th placing in Lumiranks may have sparked something and he's going really crazy in tourneys. Sonic and Steve are still his two worst matchups so far. Sonix and Acola especially are really good players with Sonix getting 2nd for pretty much every single tourney for like a year and his 2nd place streak was only beaten by shuton who brought him to third. Acola has been 1st for 2 Lumiranks now though it seems likely that either Miya or Spargo will take the 1st place spot in the next rankings. Shulk is also a pretty dangerous matchup as Leo learned when he fought what may be the best Shulk player Akio in Umebura as previously he had thought that Joker was a good matchup for Shulk but apparently he just never met a good enough Shulk that could beat his Joker but it seems like his Byleth is good enough to counter Shulk.
