I don't really understand why developers refrain from using tensorflow instead. Tensorflow estimators would have been much easier and efficient to train/deploy on ML engine considering all the factors.

I meant using a feature column and canned tensorflow estimators would've made it more developer friendly to understand. I'm not against the use of sklearn by any means :P But, the number of advantages an estimator has in ML engine is really good. If you wanna fully automate the process from a client application, from creating a model, creating training jobs, deploy the model, managing versions and making batch predictions, estimators are the way to go.
