!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Extra Information & Sometimes Corrections if Needed !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! 0:27 I am going to go on a large side note here that I wanted to put in the video but realized it's just a waste of my breath as the people who it is target to wont listen to me anyways. So I put it here instead. I would like to talk about the million comments a got from Hungarians saying that Hungary didn't want to be in the war and that they where forced into it by the Austrians, this way denouncing the Belgrade armistice and also somehow justifying their comments about how they should reverse Trianon. Anyways, this statement isn't really correct. Yes the Hungarian Prime minister Tisza was against the war and there where some in the Hungarian parliament who shared his views but saying Hungary didn't want the war due to these statements is like saying US didn't want to declare the war of 1812 just because some people in the congress voted against it. The fact remains AH couldn't have declared war if Hungary didn't approve it and despite Tisza initial disagreement they eventually did agree to the war with Tisza saying "It was with difficulty that I decided to advise war, but I am now convinced of its necessity." Plus many Hungarians even actively supported the war at the start like Stephan Burián von Rajecz this support can also be seen through the large enlistment enthusiasm of the Hungarians at the start of the war. So Hungarians saying that "we didn't want to be in the war anyways" or "it's all fault of the Austrians they controlled us we had no say in it" is just wrong. 1:11 Communist Hungary did give autonomy to Ruthenia and the council in Uzhorod for that brief period reneged on trying to join Czechoslovakia and wanted to stay with Hungary but when Communist Hungary fell the council went back to trying to reunite with Czechoslovakia. Even though one of the Rusyn councils meat up in Marmaroschsiget it actually was debating about whether the Rusyn populated lands north of the city it should join Czechoslovakia not the city itself, the city was just a meeting place as it had a Romanian majority not Rusyn. Therefore in the peace talks in Paris Marmaroschsiget was given to Romania while the Rusyn lands north of it to Czechoslovakia. 2:30 With no international help the Lemko Rusyn republic ceased to exist in early 1920. Also if you want to see the distribution of Rusyn people in 1918 - www.britannica.com/topic/Rusyn-people Although keep in mind the Rusyn population in the Austrian half of the Empire is more speculative as the Austrians categorized the Rusyns as Ukranians in their 1910 census. 3:35 There was a bunch of negotiation between the allies, Yugoslavia and Romania about how Banat will be divided and also French intervention forces where send into the area to arbitrate these talks and make sure no large scale fighting will happen. 4:02 Czechoslovakia didn't have to abide by the Belgrade armistice rules since it was never officially ratified, and so it decline to let coal shipments into Hungary. 4:14 Video of the Endre Ady funeral in Budapest. 4:33 Hungarians also reported a lot of border antagonizing by the Romanians and Czechoslovaks trying to instigate a border conflict. 5:19 Of course not all allied agreements where very specific other than supporting the formation/independence of the nations they agreed to be formed like Czechoslovakia. Therefore the Paris peace conference had to deal with the exact border lines, but there where plenty of backdoor deals before the peace conference within the allies about the new borders. It was definitely planned for Hungary to be divided and saying that Hungary could avoid it even though they lost the war is just factually wrong. 8:00 I show only Yugoslav, Czechoslovak and Romanian flags on the map but all these armies where also supported by allied soldiers and mainly generals. 8:05 The Hungarians launched the preemptive attack because they found out about the plans of the Romanians to enforce the new allied demarcation line by force despite the allies never agreeing on that with Romania. 9:49 The Hungarian army lost a battle in Zvolen between June 10-13th and was being pushed out of Slovakia, however, at the same time a letter was sent by the allied council in Paris known as the Clemenceau List. In the list the allies promised that the Romanians will withdraw from the Tisza line if the Hungarians withdrew from Czechoslovakia. Kun agreed to this the 16th and what remaining parts of Slovakia where occupied by Hungary where given back to Czechoslovakia. This sparked even more resignation and desertion from the army and more general hatred towards the Communist government who was giving up the land they just conquered. However, even more angering was the fact that after the Hungarian withdrawal and despite allied pressure the Romanians did not withdrew from the Tisza line which then sparked the last ditch offensive across the line by the Hungarians. 12:47 The area in northern Slovakia where it says it's disputed Polish population it's complicated. First the fact that there was a "Polish Majority" doesn't mean there where no Slovaks living there. Second the 1910 Hungarian census did not have Polish as a choice so many people in those areas opted to say "Slovak" being their native language as that was the closest language to what they spoke which was a Western Slavic dialect between Slovak and Polish. Whether this language was closer to Polish or Slovak is up to a linguistic debate and really doesn't matter because what matters is if the people thought of themselves as Polish or Slovak. Now many of these people may have never even really thought about it seeing themselves as just the subjects of the AH who lived on a border of a linguistic continuum so asking one of them at that time "what they are?" may have been very confusing to them. However, what is interesting is that in those areas in the 1921 and 1931 Polish censuses Slovak is stated to be only about 7% (in the 1921 census) so it seems like the people there did come to think of themselves as Polish if they didn't think of themselves as Polish already. Slovaks argue this is because of a post war migration of people from those areas to Czechoslovakia but this entire area is full of he said she said sources and quite frankly I believe the facts we do know seem to favor the Polish argument. 15:36 I added the [Soviet] part and [Romanian] part into this quote, hence the brackets, because when Clémenceau was talking about these strategic positions and the treaties he was also talking about Romania (after all the French were the main people who helped Romanians during the Romanian Hungarian war) and Soviet aggression and therefore the brackets just reflected what Clémenceau was talking about anyways in different areas of the speech. 17:36 Figures on the screen are taken from - Berger, P., ‘Wealth, Poverty and Institutions in the Habsburg Empire’s Successor States (1918-1929)’, From Empire to Republic, New Orleans, University of New Orleans Press, 2010. -Polish and Romanian 1920 figures have a * next to them as during that time the countries where involved in a war and not all their new areas where fully consolidated. 18:11 and the Visegrad Group Video scripts with all my sources are available for free on my Patreon.

The guy who gave the order to disband Hungary's (relatively large) army during the Károlyi government immediately moved to Yugoslavia lol The idea was that if they disbanded the army instead of resisting, the peace deal would be more favorable. I'd say this mostly backfired as it made them helpless to prevent further claims.

@@secretname4190 Not really, they had military larger than the Czechs, Romanians, and Serbs combined, and host of veteran officers from Austria, Hungary. and Germany offering their support. Even with only the red army militia, which was much smaller and not as well trained or equipped, they still had a great deal of success against the Czechs until they pulled out at the request of the Entente, thanks to former Austrian officers. The French population was not keen on a balkan war, and the expeditionary force France had in the region was still not enough to give their side the numeric advantage.

This video doesn't know what happened. King of Romania was Ferdinand von Hohenzollern, who was a big land owner in the K.of Hungary, he was married to Marie von Saxe-Gotha, grand daughter of Victoria von Hanover queen of United Kingdom. World War 1 was a war against the Habsburg by the other houses of the Holy Roman Empire. the Habsburgs were emperors of the Holy Roman Empire for hundreds of years, also kings in Spain and Portugal, Italy, Bohemia, Hungary, Croatia, lords of Netherlands, they even married their daughters on the throne of France - Marie Antoinette von Habsburg married her cousin Louis 16 on the throne of France, that's why the "French" Revolution of 1789. The Habsburgs even got on the throne of England, when Philip 2 von Habsburg king of Spain married Mary I Tudor. Dude wanted to mary Elizabeth 1 Tudor after Mary died, but Elizabeth went to guerrila war against the Habsburg, and you have the episode of the Spanish Armada sent by the Habsburg to invade England. The Habsburg were filthy wealthy, they owned the Americas, the East Asia colonies like Pilipines and trading posts like Formosa and Macau.

What is a view of an average Croatian on Austria-Hungary today?
@misobarisic4013
@misobarisic4013 3 жыл бұрын
@@DushanBauer The average Croat doesn't know much about that part of history. That's a shame. They know more about the first and second Yugoslavia and the hegemony Serbs tried to enforce. Let's just skip the Habsburg monarchy and Napoleon's brief control of some Croatian land. Croatia was split into 2 in AH. Dalmatia went to Austria and Croatia-Slavonia went to Hungary (Croatia has been in union with Hungary ever since the signing of Pacta conventa 1102). There were fierce attempts of magyarisation and germanisation. Khuen Hedervary made it almost impossible for someone to succeed if they didn't speak Hungarian in Croatian institution. Seems normal right? Not to mention the way the Hungarians modified the Croatian Hungarian settlement after it was signed by both parties (they added another section to it). There's much more than this. I don't know why I even bothered mentioning this. Nonetheless, I, as a Croat from Slavonia, would say that sticking with Hungarians for hundreds of years was at least beneficial in one way. Croatia would have been absorbed by god knows who otherwise. Trialist or a federative AH wouldn't have led to its collapse. Yes, there are numerous ethnicities but higher levels of autonomy were needed. You can't have two nations which are total overlords all the time. I'd choose to stick with anyone but Serbs, those lying bastards. As you can see, this is really biased but oh well

The saddest thing about treaty of Trianon is the still living hate among the countrys that benefited or lost from it. Central and east europe would be so much better if we would not hate each other.
@Kubqo95
@Kubqo95 3 жыл бұрын
I think that its just temporary nostalgia with the 100 years of trianon thing. Generally central european countries have very good relations. At least on political level. There is mostly shared sentiment about what they want, industries are pretty similar. I come from central-south Slovakia, there are mostly mixed populations of slovaks and hungarians and I dont see this hatred at all. I never had a problem where people would hate on each other based on ethnicity, its very common to hear hungarian or slovak there, so idk. Most haters are people that never met hungarians mostly from north. And there isnt even that much of them. Last elections we even had a hungarian party in power. Im Slovak, who lives in czechia and works with polish. Idk maybe im just blind but I feel that this hate is just in some small groups that never met each other

@@19Szabolcs91 2009 is 12 years ago. But basically what happened was that hungary enacted law allowing foreign citizens to get hungarian citizenship based just on their heritage. Slovak government reacted with changing its law so people accepting foreign citizenship would lose Slovak citizenship. ironically enough there was just bare minimum of slovak hungarians that lost citizenship, most of them were people living in austria, czechia and germany. I mean it was pretty stupid on both sides, but what can you do. @@ShiningForce07 Why should you, hungarian is not an official language in Slovakia. Benes decrees are a thing of a past that and they should stay there. Getting rid of them would be very complicated if not impossible. Slovakia overall treats hungarian population much better than hungary treats slovak population, if there is any. Most of it assimilated and therefore disappeared in past 100 years. All of these are just pointless issues that dont manifest in real world. We can talk back and forth all day about these talking points, but what im talking about is that in real world this doesnt exist, its all just dick measuring contest. People like Orban are just populist dipshits that have no idea what is life of average slovak hungarian like, treat their own population at home like shit. Hi! Great video overall, but you missed a pretty huge detail. At 9:50 you mention that the Kun government was pushed out of Slovakia. This is not exactly true. After the advances in Slovakia the Allied leaders sent an ultimatum to Kun (Clemencau jegyzék- did not find in English). Kun was supposed to pull out of Slovakia, and in exchange Romania would be ordered to abandon the Tiszántúl and pull back to the last demarcation line. Kun agreed and pulled back Hungarian forces, which infuriated the populace and prominent members of the military leadership (it lead to the resignation of Stromfeld Aurél). However, the Romanian troops did not evict the occupied lands.

To be fare the letter was accepted June 16th when the Hungarian troops where already being pushed out of Slovakia after their defeat at Zvolen June 10-13th but yes I should have mentioned the letter as it technically was the official ceasefire treaty between Hungary and Czechoslovakia. Before you start any comment war, I would like to tell you something. We shouldn't remember the Kingdom of Hungary as a state that oppressed their minorities (which was happening last 100-150 years). Before these nationalistic things we lived more or less peacefully without any tensions. Hungarians, Romanians, Slovaks, Croats, Slovins, Rusyns, Germans, Jews... Kings that have ruled over this Kingdom, were kings of all of these nations. We fought in every single war together. When the Mongols have come, we have fought against Mongols. What I'm trying to say is, that we lived more or less peacefully for 800 years. We can't despise the Kingdom of Hungary just because the last 100 years were harsh. All in all, we can't do nothing about it. Nobody who did these things, towards minorities or later towards hungarians is not living now. The only reasonable thing we can do is looking at it as a historical fact. We are living in 21th century. We are modern nations in modern Europe. We should act like that. "History is a science. Not a tool."

while i appreciate your sentiment, you must remember, the last years of the kingdom were the deciding factors, the people who live today on those lands are people who are more connected and closer to the ones who were oppressed, telling them to "forgive the oppressors because their distant ancestors were not oppressed and lived peaceful" is a bit insulting. the reason people in modern day europe should cooperate is not because 500 years ago they did, it's because today they are much more knowledgeable and open minded, today they should know that looking at the past for any inspiration is a very slippery road that should be threaded lightly.

Yeah, no central European country presented accurate information. Every country skewed what ever data they could in their favor. However, the allied negotiators knew this. It is not unfair 5:15 blame Karolyi. August von Mackensen was still here in Hungary with his army and offered the Hungarians that if they wanted, he could repulse the Romanian attack and help them. Karolyi arrested him because he wanted to please the Entente. Furthermore, he completely disarmed the army returning home from the front. There was a small group who had been serving on the hard front for years. They were able to recapture territories from Austria in the face of overwhelming force. Bélás Kun's Slovakian campaign also showed that the Czechoslovaks were not that strong. Hungary still had military potential. she would have lost territory in all kinds of ways, but she could have fought a much better position for himself. But because of Károlyi, the country was literally defenseless. Neighbours did what they wanted with her.

After watching the video about early history of Hungarians, I was sure that the dissolution of Hungary topic will be brilliant, too! It is very detailed and all effort was put into it by the author. The approach is perfectly neutral so either Hungarians or any other nations involved can learn from it. I remember how much we, Hungarian kids, hated Karolyi when we were teenagers! :D Now as a grown up, it is not as straightforward. Probably because grown up people have been in similar situation when decision with no choice needs to be made. Summarizing, Trianon was horrible but it was a fact...and it was coming whatever we played around it! It caused final damages in Hungary but there is one much more dangerous weapon against Hungarians: the "Trianon Syndrome"! It is an illness of believing no life to be continued after Trianon. It keeps the Hungarians in sorrow and apathy. WAKE UP! Open your eyes and realize the lethal mental weapon made against us (not from the surrounded countries)! Stand by brotherhood with Slovaks, Croatians, Slovenians, Serbians and Romanians. This has so much benefit what we never ever could have got from a larger Hungary with further conflicts as we Hungarians have the feature of living anywhere successfully.....but just with open heart! I have to say thanks for mentioning the Ruthenians! Not many historicists bother about them! Respect for that! Greet from Budapest!

Yes but they still wont pass anything favorable to hungarian minorities since they don't want to alienate the nationalist voters.

@@NegruRW Just a few, not exhaustative examples that come to mind: Most recently Ukraine forbidden Hungarian schools, Romania banning transylvanian flags to be displayed on public buildings (the rule may be even stricter i don't rememer off the top of my head). The slovak language law that pretty much bans public usage of hungarian, for example in Kassa on some monuments you will see many languages like garman and english, but not hungarian. Also there are multiple cases of workplaces banning employees from speaking hangrian among eachother etc. But these are just the laws, ask any hungarian living in these countries and they will tell you how they are being mistreated even on the individual level.

@@raktor1996 You know you have a weak case when you have to tell me what other countries do when the topic at hand doesn't concern that.. I will address only the part that I can answer for... Displaying the hungarian flag on a public building is not illegal..Other types of flags may not be allowed but that is the case in any country on earth when you are talking about public buildings..You don't see the Confederate flag on the Capitol after all..As for workplaces banning employees I don't know of any so be more specific..None of my hungarian friends tell me they are mistreated..That does not mean there are no incidents but they usually concern nationalists on both sides and they are usually circus type of events..The general population gets on well..surprisingly well considering we are not the most educated or progressive chaps in Europe

@@NegruRW What? How does the topic not concern other countries? Are we having the same conversation? Anyway, when talking about the flags, I didn't talk about the hungarian but the transylvanian, more specificly multiple flags representing towns and regions, which are not at all unusual as romanian regions are allowed to have their similar flags. The workspace discrimination thing i think i read in an article, if you want i can search for it. I'm glad your Hungarian friends do not feel mistreated, unfortunately I know many who do. You can play down these problems by calling them "circus type" all you want, but denying it never solved any problem.

Could the Austro-Hungarian Empire have been saved or was to rotten to the core to be kept from falling apart?
@ihavenoidea2736
@ihavenoidea2736 3 жыл бұрын
I think the empire could have been saved. If there was no war, they could assimilate minorities and Hungary could be almost 100% Hungarian again and Austria (and a lots of other territories) almost 100% Austrian, resulting in stabilizing the empire and it could improve a lot of things because with all those minorities, Hungarians and Austrians couldn't communicate very well, literally they couldn't cooperate but in case if assimilation this could be improved and it could be waaaaaay better, and more cooperation in the army, because it could be terrible to issue an order in 5 languages at least. So this could be a good, or at least better solution rather than fighting a great war and also more minor wars, and mostly Hungary lost even more land, and a lots of Hungarians were assimilated, killed, restrictions on Hungarians (and also other minorities) were issued (you couldn't even have a Hungarian flag in Romania, or a map of Greater Hungary, or write a poem, or anything, because you could get in the prison very easily, not only in the years of 1918-1920 but even earlier, like in 1848 when Hungarian minorities (mostly croats, serbs, romanians) helped the Austrians while killing a bunch of Hungarians. So yes, it could be saved in my opinion.

Best history channel by far , 20 min passed by like 5 , so articulative and even helping simple understanding by stressing important words. Just beautiful. As someone with romanian parents now i see and think the hungarians shouldnt got bruised so badly, and could have kept oradea, arad etc.

I disagree, those were key administrative points of the region, there was a railway - like in Czechoslovakia - that presented an important liasion, so it was similarly chosen to be kept in the region. *And* those cities didn't have Romanian population *bc it had been illegal* for Romanians to move *into* the cities - by Hungarian decree. But the area around them was still predominantly Romanian & in Arad there was a relatively strong Romanian independence strongpoint, growing.
