I play outfield, and I can totally agree you literally can't see shit when it's in the sun. Doesn't change shit if your glove is in front of you, my coach has told me that many times and it doesn't do anything.

This is an example of great baserunning and fielding. Even though they miss the ball, most of these guys track it to the very last moment. It just shows how hard the sun makes some plays. As far as baserunning goes, these guys don't stop unless it's a shallow hit.

Obviously you'd expect all these to occur in the early afternoon, when the sun is high and behind home plate (baseball diamonds are oriented NE). And indeed, a majority of these plays happened in the first half of these afternoon game, when the sun would be highest. Though interestingly, some plays did appear to occur towards late afternoon (you can tell by the shadow length and inning). Here's a breakdown of where those plays occurred and what inning: *Location and Inning:* SF Bot 4, SEA Top 4, STL Bot 7, WSH Bot 3, SEA Top 6 BOS Bot 2, TEX Top 1, ATL Top 2, CHC Top 6, SEA Top 10 CIN Bot 7, SF Bot 8, SF Bot 8, LAA Top 3, BAL Top 5 OAK Bot 5, TOR Top 3, CLE Bot 3, OAK Bot 5, NYM Top 5 NYM Top 2, OAK Top 4, OAK Bot 5, CLE Bot 5, CLE Bot 1 OAK Bot 5, LAD Bot 8, DET Bot 1, OAK Top 9, LAD Top 7 WSH Bot 3, TOR Bot 3, KC Top 4, OAK Bot 3, NYM Bot 6 WSH Top 4, CHC Bot 1, LAD Top 4, LAD Bot 1, OAK Top 1 BOS Bot 5, BOS Top 4, KC Bot 6, NYY Top 7, NYM Bot 1 *Location Frequency:* OAK 8, NYM 4, LAD 4 SF 3, SEA 3, WSH 3, BOS 3, CLE 3 CHC 2, TOR 2, KC 2 STL1, TEX 1, ATL 1, CIN 1 LAA 1, BAL 1, DET 1, NYY 1 *Inning Frequency:* 1st - 7 2nd - 3 3rd - 7 4th - 7 5th - 8 6th - 4 7th - 4 8th - 3 9th - 1 10th - 1

If you want to know what this is like for outfielders, grab a baseball and throw it up as high as you can. Then, move around to try and align the ball with the sun. Watch the ball disappear before your very eyes.

I was at the game at Rogers Centre where Beltran dropped the fly ball, sitting in the outfield seats right behind him. Was pretty crazy to see that happen from 20 feet away. Ended up being a huge play in that game. I think Hutchison beat Severino that day.

I played semi-pro ball in Guelph, Canada. If you played left field for an evening game the sun would go down directly behind the batter. You were literally blind out there for about two innings and just prayed it was hit somewhere else.

7:52 How the fuvck was that a fair ball? Shit clearly landed way over in foul territory.
@DAK4Blizzard7 жыл бұрын
It was close for sure, and I wish there was a better angle. Given the Dodgers didn't challenge it, it probably was indeed a fair ball. (The Dodgers challenged an out call at home plate an inning later, so they did have the opportunity to challenge if they had wanted.) The Dodgers won the game 8-4 (which was played recently on August 13, 2016), and Reddick made a nice catch battling the sun later. So all in all this play wasn't important to the game.
