After the collision at home plate that you see at 3:20 seconds, Baseball changed the rules and there would be no more collisions at home plate. I think the runner might have to slide to avoid the collisions, and the catcher cannot block the plate anymore, it's complex but there is no more collisions at home plate. The catcher at 3:20 was out for the season and maybe missed some of the next season. Great player.

I think they can still have these if they implement correct rules. First would be the principal point of contact must be below the head. If the point of contact is the head its an out. Including in that if the play is determined to be intentionally targeting the head its an immediate ejection and substantial fine. Second would be if the catcher is determined to be in a position where they cant reasonably protect themselves and the runner still hits him its an automatic out.

Posey was severely injured in that collision. He was out for a year, and is the main reason why they changes the rule on these sorts of plays. It’s called “the Buster Posey rule”. It’s funny you say that catchers must be the crazy ones. Catcher is my favorite baseball position, but I hear that’s not the norm. I think they have to be one of the smartest players on the field. They’re calling pitches and are in constant communication with the pitcher. They are also watching everything that’s going on in the field, and are instrumental in trying to stop base stealing. Catchers are very often the ones who end up as managers later on in their careers.

They call the equipment the catcher wears " the tools of ignorance " because catching is the most physically demanding position plus they take a beating from foul tips and the collisions at home . There was a running joke that if two catchers shook hands it took a plumber to get their hands apart because a catchers fingers are all bent and crooked from being broken so many times

3:20 when Buster Posey got hit by the baserunner, his leg was Badly broken... he was out for the rest of the season... I believe there was a rule change after that hit... i lived in Milwaukee right near the staduim at that time, and it was all people spoke about until football season.

On one hand you have the injuries to the catchers and the runners that are avoidable, but both are in the heat of the moment and are not worried about avoiding injury as much as they are outplaying each other. On the other hand, it's a bit more fair to have the catcher not squat on home plate because if the catcher is, where does the runner have to go? That's like if a soccer/futbol match after an attacker maneuvered past every defender and was against the goalie, it turns out that the goalie built a wall out of his team's gear that's blocking the goal entirely. It might seem different, but it's pretty much the same. In order to get to the point where they can score, they have to literally go through the opposing team. That doesn't seem safe or fair. Baseball isn't hockey so it makes less sense that you have some guy squat up on the goal.

The sad thing about the collision at 2:52 (the older clip) is that it happened during the All-Star Game, which literally doesn't mean anything or have any stakes. The runner, Pete Rose, was notorious for playing with maximum effort at all times and actually hurt the catcher Ray Fosse pretty badly in a play that didn't matter

My favorite play of all-time. Also, it did mean something. This was when the bonus money for winning made a difference to a lot of players income and pride of winning mattered. In the parade that today's all-star game is, nothing matters.

2:52 this one was Pete Rose colliding with catcher Ray Fosse and he hit him with such force that Fosse had permanent shoulder pain/injury after that. It's the most infamous home plate collision in history I'd say.

If a catcher is legally or illegally blocking the plate, it is permissible for the runner to barrel the catcher over provided he does not deviate his path or target the catcher. Also, if a runner chooses to run on the fair side of the line when racing a throw to the plate, he can do so to disrupt the throw

catchers masks are typically held on with a few elastics meeting at a point behind the head. they're not hard to get off but they stay on while serving their purpose of keeping a pitch / deflected pitch from hitting them in the face.

i can't stand watching a video called "the most violent plate collisions in history" when it doesn't show buck martinez having his leg break while blocking at home plate and then making a double play by throwing to third, not getting the out but having the third baseman throw back to home and buck making the out with a broken leg at the plate. so many of these highlights don't have that play in it and it genuinely makes me mad.

Buster Posey's injury at 3:20 is the reason that home plate collisions have largely been outlawed in baseball. He was on pace to become one of the greatest catchers of all time but the amount of concussions and leg injuries he suffered from home plate collisions knocked about 5 years off of his career and he had to retire early. As exciting as home plate collisions are, the risk of losing your best players for the season isn't worth the reward of 1 run in a regular season game.

He retired early due to being in constant pain even though he put in one of his best years before bowing out around 31 or 32. He has 3 titles and changed a franchise so he might be a hall of famer. Other random facts... Brian Jordan was a linebacker in the NFL and Adam Dunn was 6'7 260 and I'm pretty sure at least 2 of these catchers had to retire due to concussions... probably more

2:59 was an All Star game! Pete Rose ruined the catchers career for bragging rights! The following video was the major factor for changing the rules at charging the catcher. Buster Posey’s legs were broke after that play

Daz you came off very arrogant with the "softening up the sports" quip when there are a number of studies from retired guys showing the blunt trauma and brain effects from how things were before certain rule changes across our american sports leagues. They've done a fine job maintaining the integrity of the games while making them safer overall, these guys are superior athletes but they're still humans who have to live life after their careers are over. Food for thought, you still got football hockey and boxing/mma if you wanna see guys physically dominate 😂
