The amount of people playing soccer is huge in America but for most people it’s their second or third sport so they don’t focus development as much as the others. It also has a general connotation as being a child’s sport with most people having soccer be something they play in primary school and then switch to more physical sports.

Btw, I lived in Honduras and went to the game of the two rival teams of the city I lived in. I stayed away from the sections of the die hard supporters though. The two sections of the rival supporters were separated by an entire empty section, and there were cops in full riot gear, shoulder to shoulder, and both sides of the empty section keeping the fans apart from each other.

Football/soccer is massive in the US as a game played by kids all over in many or all the suburban areas. There's even the term "soccer moms" which refers to the parents of kids who play soccer as well as little league baseball etc... It's also absolutely massive in big cities within the Latin immigrant communities (along with volleyball). It's simply not one of the major pro sports and the best players in the world that play internationally play in the Euro leagues etc. I'm not at all a big soccer fan but I watch every world cup and have been to a soccer game for the first time and loved it. It's way better live. As a hockey fanatic i can say it's similar in that way. Anyone and everyone who doesn't know about hockey who attends an NHL game will think of the game differently and love it. The thing that is important is that soccer and basketball are low expense games. Pick up a ball and either shoot some hoops or set up a net and try to score some goals. Hockey and football require equipment and it's costly. When you're a kid and growing, having to constantly replace equipment with new equipment as a kid gets bigger can become far too expensive. However in Canada hockey is just like baseball in the US. It's just what kids play.

Soccer has always been popular here ever since i was a teen in the 90s, but only on a local level, such as in parks or schools. American Football, Baseball, and Basketball are the top 3 sports on a national level. From what i've seen, it's like how basketball is popular in the UK, or in other European countries. Soccer is finally making it on the national level though. I've been seeing the MLS on the national broadcast stations over the last few years.

The problem with American Soccer is that the best athletes, which the country produces, tend to gravitate to other sports instead. It is slowly coming around and the National Team is making some strides but they still have quite a way to go before they can actually expect to compete on the "World Cup" level.

When he said "if you're a freedom loving patriot: soccer" he was being sarcastic towards america. Oh and that game you were talking about with Green, that was 2010 and it ended 1-1. You could say they won 1-1... because they really weren't supposed to have a chance. But England played so boringly in that tournament, lucky for you the trend's been going up since 2012

One of the reasons that football/soccer doesn’t appear as big in the United States is because the big networks have a hard time airing the games. The constant nature of soccer means that there aren’t any breaks for commercials. In most other sports there are lots of breaks. This makes it very expensive to air matches uninterrupted. Historically this has resulted in professional matches being ignored by major networks in prime time.

Curiously, more people in the US play soccer recreationally than any other sport (both in schools and as adults). As you mentioned, it's just not pushed commercially at the professional level as much as other sports like the NFL, NBA, or even MLB. Couple this with a lack of professional development like European clubs have from youth level and you can start to see why there is such a gap despite the resources being available.

That's why America and Canada need more immigrants because purebred (purebred meaning being in the country for at least 5-6 generations) natives of that country are apathetic to soccer and if you see most soccer leagues in those countries you'll find American and Canadian kids for sure put those kids are mostly from first- or second- generation immigrant families (the communities who have a real passion for the sport).

It was the first game of the group stage of the 2010 World Cup. US beat England 1-0. Also, the growth of soccer in the US over the last 10-15 years has been extraordinary. Soccer is more popular than baseball with Americans 55 and under. NBC signed a massive deal with EPL worth hundreds of millions of dollars and the ratings are making it well worth it. Pubs are packed on Saturday and Sunday mornings watching the Premier League and other European leagues.

Trust me, many Americans realize the faults of both ourselves, and the absurdity of some things our fellow countrymen say and do. And take the piss; we make fun of it. There's also a pretty strong Anglophile pro-British streak in American society, even if it's among a minority. That the Oversimplified guy says these things is pretty normal. On the "If you're a freedom-loving patriot you call it soccer" thing, I think he's an American being sarcastic. He comes across as liberal or left-wing or whatever you want to call it, and in the US, the right/conservatives/Republicans have pretty much co-opted the term "patriot" and its derivatives to describe themselves, making more liberal people (in the minds of the conservatives) unpatriotic. It's BS, of course, but it's a thing they do. And of course, from the conservative/Republican POV (not everyone, but the loudest people on that side over the last generation or two) all foreigners are lesser because they're not Americans. So it sounds to me like this is just someone more on the leftward end of the American political spectrum doing an eyeroll at the conservatives. Re: football/soccer, just as a data point, soccer started to become more popular in this country when I was in 6th grade or so, when I was 11. I'm 57 now. Most of the kids at my school were kind of insane about soccer. At older ages, though, it fades behind baseball/football/basketball. Ice hockey has become more popular in the last 25 years or so, but not *quite* up to the big three. Soccer is more popular than it was in the past, but not by a whole lot. I don't know that it'll ever catch up, at least not within the next generation or two, unless something happens with American soccer that catches and holds the attention of a few million more people. If that happens, then sure, Americans *could* become a powerhouse in soccer, if we started devoting time and money and resources, and pushing kids as hard from a young age in soccer as we do now in b/f/b, and devote enough resources to professional soccer to attract the best athletes. I don't see that happening in the foreseeable future, though.
@Szolrykor
@Szolrykor 3 жыл бұрын
You missed some bits on the left-wing/liberal side of things, particularly the ones that just outright condemned patriotism and characterized it as ignorant jingoism and baseless pride in a nation built on slavery and hate and oppression and stolen land, etc. etc. Hardly a case of conservatives simply "co-opting" the term. I think the Oversimplified guy probably is American but the quips seem a lot more like ones a foreigner would make about Americans as a whole. Safe to assume that's what they're supposed to be, given the context. Especially the fat thing, it doesn't really strike me as something an American liberal would go for.
