Күн бұрын

The recent Shohei Ohtani/Ippei Mizuhara gambling scandal has reignited a decades old debate: does Pete Rose belong in the Baseball Hall of Fame?
Pete Rose is one of the most controversial and well-known figures in sports history. MLB's all-time Hit King bet on baseball, including betting on his own Cincinnati Reds while he was player-manager and manager of the club. Beyond that, he's lied about his actions for decades, never repented, and potentially committed even more heinous acts beyond the gambling.
This video is why I think he should NEVER be allowed into Cooperstown.

@@kenw2225The problem is Rose is ehy Rose is not in. Rule number one should be protect yourself at any cost. Legally speaking of course. Rose failed to do that. He was followed for over a month. The man at one point had a deal that would keep him out of prison, forgive his gambling debts, and eventually let him in HOF. He screwed that up. And we are talking 6 figure gambling debts. Rose had some associates of less than stellar character behavior wise. After having gone throught that already with Black Sox scandal they did want to take a chance of it happening again. The mob was still around at this point. The repeated lying by Rose did not help. Rose thought he was above the sport. That is not to say MPB is not in its own way hypocritical. They knew he had a major gambling problem for decades and did nothing. Granted when Rose started playing to gamble you went to a bookie. Also no Gamblers anonymous either. For Rose to get even a chance to get in he has to release a public statement apology to the fans of baseball in general and not to the commisioner of.

Pete Rose *did* bet on his own team, and that’s what I feel is unforgivable. I grew-up in the 70’s & 80’s. I saw Pete play at Wrigley Field several times and he was a great ball-player that we ALL respected, even if we hated him. It’s a shame.

Bet on them winning. Who cares about that? In fact, I would encourage players to do so, because it would make them even more motivated to win. It gets pretty boring even for the players by game 162, especially if you aren't a playoff contender. Plus it's an addiction, much like how we're realizing that drug addicts shouldn't go to prison. They should've sent pete as an inpatient to some rehab for a year then put him on indefinite probation and let him back in MLB provided he continues to pass those probation conditions.

I love the example about how Rose’s managerial decisions would be influenced by his gambling. Who knows if he intentionally saved his best relievers for a game he had a wager on, sacrificing the games that he didn’t have money on. The fact that Johnny Bench said he shouldn’t be a HOF should tell fans that Rose is not a good person

So, what if he didn't bet on his team, and he still did the exact same thing... would it be wrong then? Let's say he didn't make a bet, but still saved his best relievers... does that make it wrong? If so, then you are essentially saying that the REASON you do something makes your act of doing something right or wrong. I could donate all my money to charity, but its only a good thing if I did it out of pure kindness? If I did it to get some sort of tax relief, then it doesn't mater? Smfh, this is ridiculous thinking. Especially for a sport.

@@FourFriends-gk8lz There is no way you can prove that he ever bet on his team as a player or that he ever bet for his team to lose as a player-manager. In fact, there is no way you can prove that his betting altered the outcome of the game. And since you are the one making the claim that his betting affected the integrity of the game, the burden of evidence lies with you. The issue is that people want to use Rose's betting to redefine what is integral to the game. Just like when the Hall of Fame rules were changed in 1991 to keep people off the list. "Integrity" is just a smokescreen to control the perception of the game. Otherwise the MLB would have already banned steroid users from being in the Hall of Fame, and they would have been banned from the entire league altogether like Rose. Because steroids actually do affect a game, unlike betting on your team to win. Not to mention the use of illegal substances to alter the spin rate of a pitch... that actually does affect the game. Anyone making an argument about the integrity of the game regarding Rose should 100% have the same views regarding steroids and illegal substances.

We as a society have to separate artist from their art or we will have no art. Majority of the greatest artist in history whether illustrators, athletes, musicians, filmmakers, writers; have done horrendous things against their fellow man OUTSIDE their time creating the times art they birthed into existence. You cancel the art because of the artist, you cancel the majority of all art already in existence and the art yet to come. If the artist hasn't been canceled, statistically speaking, that just means their cancellation is waiting on their inevitable future crimes against humanity and fall from grace. Reminds me of that old Star Trek episode 'The Enemy Within' where a transporter mishap separates Captain Kirk into two halves: his good, kind decent side and the dark, impulsive depraved side. Immediately, his empathetic pacifist good natured persona is a weak ineffectual leader without the other more aggressive, passionate, dark impulses of man side. And the dark side goes running amok the ship paranoid, raging, several murder and rape attempts on his crew and just complete sociopathic savage on the rampage. Spock assesses that it is Kirk's unsavory side, the aspects of his personality that he finds ghastly and repulsive the very qualities that make him such a great, successful leader of men and Federal starship. That same metric can be applied to artists across all mediums and time. Cancel the artist, but not the art. Doesn't stop the music, movies, books or highlight reels from still being awe inspiring or sources of entertainment. Pete Rose the player should be in the Hall Of Fame as a player. He's not being inducted as a manager or for Pete The Degenerate Gambler. No. The player. To deny the reality he wasn't a game changer force of nature in his day is censorship and a collective lie asked of us all that I and nobody should sign off on Barry Bonds same thing. He was a Hall Of Famer before the steroid era. Everyone Practically was in steroids and competed at the same level. The steroid era saved baseballs ass. After that disastrous strike lost '94 season, baseball lost bitter fans for two and half years till the McQuire-Sosa home run race brought everyone back. It was exciting and they still had to make it actually happen.

How is it possibly not racist to create a term for just one "race" (that term itself is also an invention ironically). Whites are simply "American." Not POC. Given the professional sports leagues are advertising and endorsing sports betting nowadays, it's very hypocritical to keep him banned from Baseball and another thing that's very jarring is that a vast majority of the players that have been enshrined at the Hall are notorious drunks, womanizers, drug addicts, wife-beaters, murderers, and other incorrigible and bottom-feeding scum of the earth but they get a pass and Pete doesn't and most likely never will (while he's still alive, anyway). Either way, Pete screwed up big time and may be a churlish, brooding, bitter, foul-mouthed, and unrepentant scumbag as a person but he should be honored for his accomplishments and it's very sad that he's not there even though he has no one to blame but himself for it.

@@neonfroot True. I never thought of high-profile celebrities and public figures including Pete Rose were anywhere close to being worthy of hero-worship nor seen as infallible superheroes because they're flawed human beings who have good and bad tendencies like the rest of us. However, what makes the difference as far as whether they're decent, honorable, and respectable people or bottom-feeding scumbags whom aren't worthy of such honor is if they behold and exhibit values like honesty, humility, decency, respect for others, and accountability for their actions. With all of that being said, leading by example is what truly makes a person worthy or unworthy of such respect. I never put people in positions of authority including preachers on a pedestal either and had no problem calling them out on their shit either which many of fellow Christians including my family members disliked greatly and considered rude, insubordinate, and disrespectful but the same time weren't above badmouthing those people themselves and preached about the importance of honesty as well how much they abhor liars and hypocrites.

Rose vs. Ichiro: Rose, through first 15 MLB seasons: 2966 hits Ichiro, through first 15 MLB seasons: 2935 hits On his way to the hits record with 4,256, Pete Rose batted .325 in 1981, at age 40, with 140 knocks, and could have easily added another 60, if not for the players strike that season, which eliminated 55 games. From ages 36-40, Rose continued to bat over .300, and had 935 total hits. Without the 50+ lost games in '81, he could have cleared 1,000 over that span, which is remarkable for the latter stages of a lengthy career. In comparison, Ichiro's career was average at best after age 36, and he hung on to get his 3,000 career hits. His days of batting .300 were long gone. But he did have an all-time great run from 2001-2010, after entering the major leagues in his prime, at age 27. Rose though, along with Ty Cobb, remains unrivaled as a MLB hitter, over a 20 year period. Go look it up ...

Pete's gambling goes back to when he was a kid. Reading "Charlie Hustle: The Rise and Fall of Pete Rose, and the Last Glory Days of Baseball by Keith O'Brien" It documents how Pete was gambling way before he even put on a Major League uniform. As a kid, Pete used to play dice and other gambling rackets on his block. Pete's father also bet on horses and took Pete to the horse track with him. His accomplishments will always be overshadowed by his gambling.

I still think Rose should be reinstated, your points have not done enough to dissuade me. If the league doesn’t believe in the “Integrity” of the game of baseball enough to not make billions off of betting and tramp stamp gambling sports books logos all over, then why should they care about letting a gambling addict be associated with the league. Also, a lot of your situations that you cover go into hypotheticals. “I’m sure he bet against his team at some point” or “He would have bet against the Reds if he was in deep enough”, except it doesn’t matter, as they’re both hypotheticals. If after 35 years, they can’t find any evidence that he bet against his own team, then that shouldn’t even be a talking point. Also, the MLB could have gotten Pete some help with his addiction, if they cared so much. I know they don’t necessarily owe it to him, but if the MLB and other major sports leagues want to keep gambling addicts from ruining the sport, then a good idea would be to get them professional help, since these people are addicts. Overall, regardless of what you think of Pete as a person, there’s no question someone who was that good of a player deserves to grace the Baseball Hall of Fame.

I agree with most all the points made here, exception being the Fosse play. There are more reasons PER should not reinstated. History has NOT exonerated Rose. With all that's changed in the gambling landscape since 1989, Rose betting on baseball is still 100% outlawed by MLB. His use of illegal bookmakers is also STILL outlawed. Even if you don't agree there is an integrity issue to induction into the HOF, there is a practical one. At this point, the only thing that could be done is to hold a separate vote and, if elected, place a plaque with the others. There couldn't possibly be a standard induction ceremony, any other inductees would have their moment turned into a circus, not fair to them and not to mention PER only real interest in HOF is the $$ that come from membership. Lastly, why do folks care so much about a deplorable person? There are some injustices that just aren't worth the trouble because the subject has acted in such a deplorable manner. Let's find someone worth fighting for. If you believe in redemption, how can we ever know he's worthy of redemption having like so many times for decades?

Thanks for the video. Pete Rose admits now (and it took awhile) that he bet on baseball, that he made a huge mistake by betting on baseball and has apologized to the baseball establishment for his wrong doing. Having said that, he is a stubborn man and it took way too long for him to admit his misdeeds. However, he played the game like his life depended on it and he is not a scumbag like Barry Bonds, who used an illegal substance(s) to destroy baseball's record book. Bonds and Lance Armstrong are the worst examples of human kind in sports. Whether Pete belongs in the Hall, they should create a wing for cheaters, with Rose and Bonds headlining the first induction ceremony. This sounds weird but "just be honest about the cheating" and put them both in the Hall. ⚾

I fully believe that the MLB making money off of gambling sponsors is a massive point of hypocrisy. The owners don’t care about the moral aspect or if games are fixed so long as the money keeps rolling in. For them to take in billions while punishing any member of the MLBPA for trying to do the same is clearly hypocritical; gambling is not an issue that you can go halfway on, because it will inexorably lead to games being fixed.

But Pete gets no sympathy Pete lied for years and years saying he never did it and you're right off him what he wanted all he had to do was it admit he gambled he wouldn't do it. If Shohei Ohtani bet on baseball and his interpreter took the fall is speculation and of course people are gonna say they covered it up because that's what they wanted to be to justify their opinion. so as I said do I feel peach should be in the Hall of Fame absolutely do I feel sorry for him no.

The only thing I disagree with is the associations with gambling companies not being hypocritical. It IS hypocritical. You can't be telling your own employees that gambling is wrong and then getting into bed with DraftKings and Pro-Line and whatever other company pays you enough. It's like a parent telling his kids that drugs are bad and yet that parent allows Pablo Escobar to do coke deals in their garage.

Casinos don’t let their dealers gamble. Is that hypocrisy? It’s not about gambling being right or wrong, athletes are allowed to bet on other sports legally. It’s about the integrity of the game being upheld. And fans gambling doesn’t affect the game, but team employees and especially players gambling does.

I like your channel and your analysis, but I disagree on Pete and the HOF. Sure Pete is and was a jerk. So are lots of guys in the HOF. I also don't care if he is ever reinstated by MLB to manage or work in any capacity. But the HOF adopting their rule to exclude him was a bait-and-switch. He never would have agreed to the ban had that rule been in place. Indeed, I doubt whether Bart Giamatti would have gone along with that had he lived. Further, Pete was never going to be a HOF manager, just like Tommy Lasorda was not a HOF player. Pete was banned when managing. Banning a player from the HOF for the actions of a manager is wrong, even if that manager is the same person. Shoeless Joe was never banned from the HOF despite his banishment for his involvement in the Black Sox scandal. He simply didn't receive the necessary support from the voters. MLB is doing this not out of principle but out of spite. Pete is an unrepentant jerk who will shill anything for cash. But he was also a transcendent player that deserves to be enshrined. Or at least have a chance on the ballot.

They tolerated what they legally couldn't stop, but vehemently opposed all sports betting until they realized how much money they could make. Even their tolerance had a financial angle (NFL injury reports). He should get into the Hall after he dies. MLB should tell him on his deathbed that he'll never get in, and 5 minutes after he's declared dead, the HOF should announce a change of policy permitting him on the ballot.

Point 1 is one of the maddening things I have ever seen, made by ESTABLISHED legacy media folks. As a philosopher and a teacher of critical thinking, it makes me really depressed, tbh. It's "inconsistency by vibes" WHICH IS NOT AN EFFING THING. Not only does the permissibility of fans gambling not transfer, but it's even more rational for a sports league, with a vested interest in sports books, to combat match fixing. Casual bettors will not bet on your sport if they believe it's fixed. Casinos don't let their table game dealers bet on any table games for this reason.

Before watching this video, I believed Pete Rose belonged in the Hall of Fame. After watching this video and doing some deep thinking I came to the conclusion that Pete Rose deserves to be in the Hall of Fame. I understand why some of the points can be unconvincing but not betting against your own team as a player but betting on them to win is a convincing argument. His stats prove it as he is the all time hits leader and has the most 200 hit seasons. He also won three world series including a world series mvp. He never bet against his own team and I also read his autobiography where he makes it clear that he was someone who hated to lose and hustled all the time. His on the field accomplishments are enough to get him in the hall of fame and I still believe he is deserving of it. This is my opinion and I understand if other dont like it. Pete Rose is one of if not the greatest hitter of all time and it's a shame that he hasnt been inducted into the hall of fame.
