But as a catcher, when the umpire falls down or gets hit, they are taught to give the umpire space and time so that they can get a second to gather their bearings. The play was live as well.

Yeah, back in the early 80's I and everyone else slid "cleats up" so you can have an advantage making it to a base safely. I do understand that the umpires are a type of innocent of bystander in that regard.

that type hit can really after my 5th year I started doing high school ball and quickly learned that I needed a serious upgrade on gear and went out and bought Major League Equipment and I use it for everything from 12U all the way up. and yes thanks for showing field issues now we need one showing the garbage we put up with from the crowd.

I umpired for 30 years accounting for about 2,500 games. It sounds strange, but getting whacked flush in the mask didn't bother me as much as a foul ball striking my arms or hands. That hurt like hell.

I was at a Yankees-Blue Jays game in 2005. There was a freak play where a bat broke and the jagged part flew backwards and made a large gash in the plate umpires leg. There was plenty of blood, as I recall. He had to be replaced.

when I was around 12 or 13 I hit an umpire in the mask with a fastball and while I didn't KO them I did give the guy a concussion, I felt bad about it, but the umpire was nice about it actually.I didnt have full control yet and I fooled the hitter (who swung and missed) the catcher and the umpire on the pitch

It used to be that the catcher could go out for a quick mound visit to buy the plate umpire some time, but they can't really do that with the limit on mound visits. Umpires will often dust off the plate or call for the ball boy to deliver some extra baseballs.

Knee injuries ain't anything to joke about, I know that much. Even mild damages to your knee over time can lead to getting your whole knee replaced with an internal prosthetic, in the case of my father.
