I got last year's version and it was awesome. Looks like they packed more content into this iteration, and kind of reminds me of my childhood playing Triple Play 2000 and Bases Loaded GB. And yes, I will always still call them the Tampa Bay Devil Rays

Also want to mention that you zeroed in on both some of my highpoints and frustrations with this particularly iteration. I actually love the overhaul of the RTTS mode which makes you select a player archetype, even if I believe the caps and starting points on most of those archetypes needs to be balanced a little more. I love that progress actually comes from game play instead of allocating points, even if the in-game algorithm that awards and deducts progress needs a complete overhaul. So, I would call this year's version positive progress, even if it feels it was a few Q/A revisions away from being fully ready.

I've loved baseball for as long as I can remember, and most of the reason for that is that my dad took the time to explain the game to me, so I wasn't bored with it as a child. I played in Little League from the ages of 5-12, and then played softball for another 2 years. Now I have the privilege of helping teach the sport to my nephew and oldest niece, who are in tee-ball this year (speaking of which, they have a game tonight). Even though tee-ball is far from the final product, the kiddos already love it! They don't really play video or computer games, though, other than learning programs and, on occasion, Minecraft. I think my brother tried to play a baseball computer game years ago, when he was a teenager, but the gameplay was so awful (to an actual baseball player) that he didn't play it for very long. For those who think baseball is just boring, full stop, I have to pose this question: If it's so boring, why does it work so well at capturing the focus of children with ADD and ADHD? This has been a personal observation, and my psychologist confirmed it as well. It isn't the only team sport to do so, but it definitely is effective. At least half of my niece and nephew's team is made up of kids with varying neurological or social disorders. Baseball is a good outlet for these kids. (P.S. We've lived in AZ since ''96, and still have Game 7 of the 2001 World Series on tape! Oh, how wonderful that moment was...)

After action report: The kiddos both hit well, but their fielding needs work. My niece dances too much in the field, instead of watching the batter and fielding the ball. She throws like her arm is a catapult. My nephew occasionally spaces out and needs to be reminded to field the ball when it comes to him, but his throwing is at least on target. The still had fun, though, and they're making improvements! We're also, as a team, working on how to be an attentive team-mate, how not to play in the dirt, how not to throw dirt at each other while waiting to bat, and how to keep our fingers out of the backstop so they don't get squashed by a stray ball. I'm sort of "team aunt," so it's mainly my job to keep an eye on them while they wait to bat. It's a process.

I'm more of a hockey fan myself. Hockey is controlled chaos. There is a degree of planning and strategy involved and on-the-fly positioning and coordination are both possible and necessary... It's just speed, violence, and improvisation. Baseball is very much a chess match.

Super Mega Baseball on PS3/PS4 is my favorite baseball game. It's way over on the arcade side rather than a realistic and licensed sim, but it's very satisfying to place the pitches and time the swings.

My main concern with getting the game is that past MLB games completely butchered player progression. My RTTS player was facing pitchers with 80 MPH fastballs by his 5th year in the majors. Most of the top prospects were pushing 30 and would lose all their ability after 1 year. Is MLB 18 any different?

Razor have you looked at Out of the Park Baseball? It's a balls-deep sandbox baseball sim where you can be commissioner, general manager and/or manager, setup your baseball world and do whatever the hell you want! That could include contracting the Dodgers ;-).

I’m more into motorsports (Forza) and gridiron football (but I haven’t played a Madden game since Madden ‘17, and that was only because it had been a decade since my last one), but I’m glad to see a good baseball game for once. I haven’t played The Show series, but when I get my PS4 I’ll have to give it a look. I’ve always been a fan of the Rays ever since I was a little kid and they still called themselves the Devil Rays.

You're right about user input having little affect on the game. I still feel burned by The Show 15 because I could never make it to the show, no matter how well I pitched. At least in MLB 2K5 I knew my fuck ups were my fault. Can anyone who's played 18 tell me if they've finally implemented HBP ejections? I was getting rocked and the idiot manager wouldn't pull me so I started plunking batter after batter. I turned it off for good after about ten headshots yielded neither an ejection nor a call to the bullpen. Hell, no one even got called to warm up! So much for that "sim" aspect of the game.

I knew you were a baseball fan but I didn't know to what degree,my dad introduced me to baseball since I had memory,he is a raging Oakland fan and I remember the diamond backs winning that world series because NY pushed for game seven and then the following year the athletics won 20 games in a fucking row and my dad was glued to all 20 of them,I even got to play his old computer game on the old windows PC. Good times in baseball,I think I have never been happier nor seen my dad happier than when we go enjoy a baseball game together literally right in front of my house. it's a shame that after the hurricane Triple A baseball has seemingly died in Puerto Rico, OH YEAH! then there was that time my dad whent to see Reggie Jackson in his retirement game in NYC LIVE! by complete coincidence!

Personally I like the game a lot. But there are a ton of issues in road to the show if your running to grab the ball when the opposing team bunts you can be running right at the ball and your character can miss the pickup of the ball. Something you have no control over can cause your attributes to fall. Which I find ridiculous... Also your team never bunts in road to the show. We were in the 9th inning of the world series down by one point. My player is on 3rd and we have no outs. So you'd think you'd take a sacrifice bunt to get the tying score across the plate and go into extra innings to win the game.... But nope your team always gets struck out or goes for massive fly balls which automatically get caught by the other team... It's just frustrating.
