He's not overpowering batters in any sense. How many of those outs were stung line drives with EVs likely over 100 MPH? It's a fun story, and who doesn't love a fun story? But I wouldn't go looking for a long-term MLB career from a 27-year-old rookie. Still...you never know, right? :)

Actually, I read that Gilbert is the 4th pitcher to do so. Gonna research that now. Edit: Yes, four pitchers accomplished this, two in the 1890's. Bumpus Jones of the Reds threw one in 1892 and was the only one of the four to do so in his very first appearance, the other three had appeared as relievers previously. Also, Jones' no-hitter was on Oct. 15, the latest in the year one was ever thrown. Ted Brittenstein of the St. Louis Browns thew one on the last day of the 1897 season, Oct. 4. This was the old Browns of the American Association, which folded after the season. The Browns, however, resurfaced in the National League as the Cardinals. The other pitcher from the modern era to accomplish this was Bobo Holloman in 1953 for the OTHER St. Louis Browns of the American League. That was his only year in the Major Leagues. His no-hitter was similar to Gilbert's in that his stuff wasn't over-powering. Browns owner Bill Veeck descibed it as such: "the quaintest no-hitter in the history of the game," saying that Holloman’s pitches were "belted" all night, but he was saved by luck and outstanding defense.

I was at this game yesterday it was such a good experience seeing the first no hitter that the dbacks threw in their own stadium.

Gilbert threw amazingly and deserves the spotlight but the defense deserves some respect for this game too, they were also top notch.

i’m almost more impressed he pulled this off with a cutter heavy game. almost daring one of the best hitting teams in the league to hit it

A bunch of well hit balls right at people. Those fielders couldn't have been positioned any better! Congrats.

First major league start, why not throw a no no. Super cool not overpowering any players just by location. Family must be so proud

I wonder if more and more rookie pitchers will consider throwing no-nos now. This could be the start of something...
