Hey there, I’m a doctor. Tea tree oil does show some evidence of having antibacterial/anti-inflammatory properties (many people use it for acne for this purpose). However, it is also a commonly known skin irritant that can cause contact dermatitis. It has also been implicated in having estrogenizing effects used long term (i.e. breast development, vaginal bleeding in prepubertal females, breast development in males). It is also very dangerous if ingested. This is the nuance lost on MLM essential oil peddlers who tout these oils as a cure all with no side effects.

I've tea tree oil a few ways (for acne, nail fungus, etc.) and I haven't had problems with it, but it didn't do anything either. However, I tried to use it in place of deodorant (it's a fairly common substitute) and it burned horribly. I can't imagine trying to put it on an open wound, and especially not on a child's open wound.

Thankfully, YL essential oils are not very high quality so any kid Princess put the oil on was probably ok. Most essential oils are skin irritants and should NEVER be placed directly on the skin. Just like they should NEVER be ingested. I like using a bit of rose in my hair (I like the smell), but it is thoroughly diluted in jojoba oil so that it is safe for my skin and hair.

Former MSN- & MPH-prepared public health research nurse. This isn't just an issue for MLMs, doctor, but also one that applies to the general public due to a lack of health literacy and a (largely superficial) substrata of preventive care via folk remedies. Being a JIPMER and St Joseph (Beirut) graduate, you'd think that I'd mean fellaheen out in the middle of nowhere or the dangers of Ayurvedic remedies, but I'm actually more shocked about it back home in North America. The audacity of marketing and stubborn arrogance of the undereducated, overconfident public leads to billions being spent on attempts at preventive care and therapeutic care that only harm. Even if the substance itself is harmless to one person, it may not be to those around them, to others to whom they may recommend it, and it is never harmless in terms of money wasted and ignorance reinforced. Access to care and proper primary prevention are both made more difficult by the essential oils, homeopathy, and "exotic" wellness industries (eg, botânicas, "Eastern medicine", detoxification trends, Ayurveda, &c). If healthcare is a war, they are the enemies' war profiteers.

I see this was posted a year ago so I don’t know if you will see this, but as a Black educator I just want to say, you did a fantastic job explaining both micro aggressions and implicit bias. I actually teach an entire lesson on both subjects- which often time show up at the same time, with my group of high school students who are mostly BIPOC attending schools where majority of the staff does not look like them. So these are things they are facing daily and are important lessons to give them language to go with what they are experiencing. I know that you use to be in education yourself and just wanted to say 👏🏾👏🏾 YES!

The only "light bulb" that went off was a reminder of my terrible experiences with aggression at the hands of POC growing up in the Bronx. I got called tons of names for being White as did my sister and my nieces. We lived in NY and were the minority in our area growing up, and racism, cruelty and hatred was on full display. One of the worst things was that a lot of this happened in my Christian school where we were being pointedly taught to love one another. One of our Hispanic neighbors threw water out her window on us when we were just leaving the building. I can't tell you how many nasty names we got called in Spanish, too. Anyone can be racist whether they are Black, White or Asian. If you're hateful, you're hateful. That's a choice one makes with the full consent of their will and not anyone else's fault.

@@user-gd2ys5tu8d Please allow me say how sorry I am that you went through this needless torture while you were growing up. No one should have to experience what you did. I did thank Hannah for explaining what micro aggressions are and the lightbulbs going off are not those exclusively to non poc. In contrast to you, I was one of only four black kids in my entire graduating class of hundreds of kids in my Catholic elementary school. The neighbors in my neighborhood from age 5 to adult, those neighbors actually made a petition to the seller of the house to not sell the house to my parents (white mom black dad), in addition they tried to pool their money to buy the house so we couldn't purchase it. Thankfully the seller sold the house to my parents. Growing up bi-racial meant for me that I did not see my parents as "White Mom" and "Black Dad'. They were just Mom and Dad and to some extent I didn't really see that we were all different colors. I know that a little hard to believe that someone does not see a person's skin color but in all honesty, that was my experience in my younger years. My parents went through hell having just married one year after civil rights were established and I can't begin to understand what they went though. I just mention these things to illustrate that we ll have some experience with racism on some level. At the end of the day, this is not a contest to see who had it worst; pain is pain no matter what color you are. I hope you've found some healing in adulthood. Bless you.

My understanding is that you should never ever put oil on a burn blister. Products designed to treat burns help the affected areas cool down. Oils hold in the heat and can actually make burns worse. This is what I was taught in my Red Cross first aid class.

@user-gd2ys5tu8d

Yeah and how these aggressions can also happen by POC to White people, too. I grew up in an area of NYC where Black people were the majority population, and also Hispanic people mostly from Puerto Rico. NY has its neighborhoods and is vastly diverse. Thing is, even though POC are the majority in many many areas of NYC, they still exhibit racism and hatred towards others. Like the friction and hatred between Black people and Asian people in the area which is quite famous. My family and I got called a lot of racist names and attacked for the color of our skin. My sister was so terrorized and intimidated that she tried to tan her skin with those self tanners and went to the beach to bake herself to look darker and thus be more accepted. She almost died from those things because they blocked her pores and she swelled up very badly and was in so much pain. I don't think anyone should have to change themselves in any way to suit some stupid prejudices and bigotry of anyone else. I decided, after seeing how much my sister suffered trying to be accepted by the POC in her school who made fun of her for being White, that I would not try to change anything about myself for anyone, ever. I don't want to try to please people who are so cruel and evil. They don't deserve it, and I will not deny myself and who I am. No one should. No one needs to change their natural color or hair or body in any way to suit anyone else.

Straight up, the first thing I thought when Princess was walking around with an empty stroller in Walmart, was that she was fencing. When I worked retail for a large department store, we were taught to look out for fencers, aka people who shoplift from stores and then sell the stolen merchandise for profit. One of the common tactics we learned to watch out for was women with strollers but no baby. Often the stroller was a ruse: wrap the stolen merchandise in a blanket, put it in the stroller and walk out. Once we had well known fencer come in with a stroller, and when security searched it, they found the entire baby seat as lined in tin-foil, which, if the merchandise was wrapped up in it properly could stop sensors from going off. I'll bet you anything this is what Princess was doing.

It is common first aid knowledge that you never put oil of any kind on a burn. I'll quote just one website (Medline): "You may put a thin layer of ointment, such as petroleum jelly or aloe vera, on the burn. The ointment does not need to have antibiotics in it. Some antibiotic ointments can cause an allergic reaction. Do not use cream, lotion, oil, cortisone, butter, or egg white."

Sometimes the line between a well-intended compliment and a micro-aggression can be very blurry. I have curly hair, and people with straight hair would often say “Oh, if I had your curls, I’d--” and I have to stop them. I thank them for admiring my curls, but natural curls don't behave like fake curls. They’re difficult to style and easily frizz. They look at me confused and I’ll have to explain that it can take anywhere from 15 mins to 2 hours to style/tame natural curls the way they want. They may think they’re giving me a compliment, but what they’re actually saying is “Why don't you style your hair fancy every day?” or “Why aren't you controlling your curls better?” Only once I go into detail about how to get the “simple style” they’d want with my curls do they say “Oh, thank God I don't have curls. That’s way too much work.” I’ll then say, “But I thought you wanted my curls?” They’ll then respond with “I didn’t know how much work they were. I’d rather wear a wig.” I don't usually take offense, but it can be frustrating to constantly be complimented and insulted at the same time. “Your curls are lovely, but-“ is not the compliment many seem to think it is.

The camp story is WILD. I think the nurse lady is doing that Christian thing where you "speak over your life". And basically try to manifest what you want by pretending it's already real. That explains the empty stroller. She probably doesn't have a baby but is "sowing the words of faith" that God will give her a baby. I'm a Christian (catholic) and religious person so no slight to anyone who believes in God provides because they do. But the prosperity gospel (which is probably what this woman believes) is very culty and MLMs are RAMPANT in them.

I don't know about microaggressions because it sounds like sometimes it's just ignorance and ignorance does not necessarily mean there's anything negative intended. We can't bemoan people somehow being aggressive when they are simply not informed at all and have no experience with a person or thing. They're looking at it from a place of ignorance or poor education. Then there are those who are passive aggressive and who MEAN to be hurtful with their little nasty advice, but not everyone.

My roommate was a kendra scott campus rep (gem), a vs pink rep and a bumble ambassador - they were just collage programs to raise brand awareness and she would do give aways of merch and sponsor parties. She never made a commission on anything but got sent a ton of free stuff. We were both shocked to find out Kendra had an MLM arm.

My mom was always into MLM and "alternative" stuff. We went to so many fairs and parties where people were saying they had the cure for everything. When I started taking my prescribed anti-anxiety medication, my mom was afraid it would hurt me. Because these types of people had filled her head with "medication bad! use oil/crystals instead!" It's not her fault. She grew up in a time where medications were largely unreliable, full of bad side effects, and largely unregulated, and it made her very afraid of even taking over-the-counter paracetamols. Which these MLM type people jumped on and preyed on to the max ofc!

My husband worked in a call center for Tahitian Noni. He worked in the middle of the night and took calls from Germany and the UK. The longer he worked there, the more they pushed up-selling to the customers, especially talking them into auto-shipments. He ended up losing that job because when they downsized the team, he didn't have the same sales numbers as others. He said the job was listed as a customer service job, and selling to people who needed help felt icky to him. They would give him "bonuses" in the form of free Tahitian Noni products. Looking back, that is really weird.

Did you know that we have Young Living in Sweden? I was somewhat aware of what mlm entails, but when my former classmate from university started posting things about this business opportunity she had come across that I first heard of Young Living. My friend has this public instagram account where she posts everything YL related. I tend to sneak onto her account when my curiosity peaks. I noticed that she had posted this zoom call she had with another YL rep. Oh the horror! I’ve never heard so many red flags in one conversation before. I honestly screamed “NO!” when I heard what these two said. I really have to transcribe the conversation and translate it sometime. They talked about my friend using essential oils on her newborn. How the other rep had to struggle to conceive, and finally got successful with IVF, and how wonderful it would be to plug YL products to people in a similar situation. And how this other rep has used YL oils for their healing properties and due to the positive affects they claim that the oils have on people’s health. And how this rep’s own kids now chooses to use essential oils instead of medicine. It sounded like this was fairly young kids, but I can’t remember an actual age being mentioned. Does this sound like a horror story in the making perhaps?! 😅

Ok, I work in a burn specialty unit. Do not put ANY unapproved products on your burns. They can make it soooo much worse. Even with the products available to us and all our knowledge, we have to be careful of which topicals we choose for various patients and types of burns. If you are burned, get the burn under cool (not cold) water within 2 minutes, then keep it clean. If it’s small, some neosporin and bandaids will be fine, but if it’s a large burn, or on face, hands, etc., go in and be seen by a medical professional.

Just insult after insult after insult...it would have been hard not to have a few words not appropriate for the ears of children. Thank you for that succinct and informative summation of microaggressions, by the way. Very good explanation, and I'm sure those sorts of comments get tossed off in MLM spheres all the time. Edit: I'm a nursery manager (plants, not tiny humans), and when i heard the 'magic ingredient' was oleander, I shrieked. That is indeed a major skin irritant! In its raw form, that plant is hugely poisonous and can absolutely kill people and animals, though it's very beautiful, hardy, and its flowers smell like marshmallows. :-) Plant it, enjoy it, and DON'T use it for anything on or in your body - this means you, MLMs!

That camp nurse should have been fired. I worked at a camp (20 years ago, now), where we had a nurse and two first-aid providers. If our nurse or either of us first-aid providers had refused a child medication, or tried something other than what was proven and necessary, we would have been let go. It's literally a liability issue, which the camp may have figured out with 'Princess.' Also, my daughter has beautiful, super curly, hair (3C according to the stylist). It's not "problematic" in any way, it has to be taken care of, like everyone has to do no matter what kind of hair they have. Sorry, the hair thing is super offensive to me and I would have been beyond livid at that woman.

I told her I didn’t think I knew that many people who would be interested since the products are on the pricey side. She said “start messaging people you’re friends with on social media even if you haven’t talked to them in years”. I told her I didn’t feel right about that. Messaging someone you haven’t spoken to in years and asking them how they are doing makes them feel really special, and like someone has been thinking about them, and then when they found out the only reason you messaged them was to sell something can be a serious let down, and it actually hurts people feelings, Ive been there before, and I said I can’t do that to someone else, and her only response to me was “this business isn’t for you then”

I am always thinking about how these people worship Mammon and how God says that a man cannot serve two masters. He must choose between God and mammon. They've made their choice and it's interesting how none of them seem to have any conviction or guilt about how they have turned their backs on God. God said He would provide, and not to worry or "spin". Yet these people not only spin, they try to maliciously destroy other people and their greed is limitless. It's pretty much satanic in how selfish it is. Satan preaches selfishness and disregarding others. Jesus teaches loving others, sharing what you have and being trusting in God as your provider.

The only useful thing I ever received from a Young Living seller was about lavender, but not the way you might think. We had gotten bedbugs after buying a storage unit and sorting through some of the boxes in our house. Nightmare. Never, ever bring items from a storage unit into your house unless you thoroughly clean and inspect every nook and cranny. It took us 4 years and finally 2 $1000 heat treatments to get rid of them. I honestly have PTSD from it now. Anyway, my niece's mother sold YL and she had their book on her cabinet. I flipped through the index for anything about bug repellent. At this point, that had become habit as we had tried everything. They actually had a mention of bedbugs, suggesting lavender. I picked up some essential oil from Walmart and mixed up a standard spray with maybe 1.5 cups of water and about 30 drops of oil. Then I attacked the bugs. The solution literally made the bugs explode. Nothing else I tried did that, from chemicals marketed for bedbugs to diatomaceous earth, or even other essential oils. Only lavender. We went through so many bottles before we were able to find a reputable exterminator who offered limited guarantees. No idea what in the lavender did it, but it worked. I loathe the smell, unfortunately, and now the association with that scent is even worse, but maybe that tip will work for someone else. Think about it, though. If it will cause a bug to explode, what does this do to people who take it internally? O_o

It's important to note that even when an essential oil does have scientific backing, you have to use it properly and at the correct concentration as they can cause chemical burns. I personally believe in many natural remedies, but I would NEVER apply essential oils to an open wound unless I had thoroughly researched it beforehand and lacked other alternatives.

Hi Hannah, I love your videos and because of all your information I am now researching more companies before I buy a product right away and no longer will buy from MLMs,( and there seem to be a million distributors in our small town.) That being said, I agree whole heartedly, that oils should not be used instead of medicine. I feel like they can be a good addition, for example some have a very nice and relaxing effect, such as lavender. I personally use Peppermint oil to aid in digestion, sore tummy, helps with heartburn and migraines. But I also will take medication if needed. I always try the Peppermint first, but I also take perscriptions and would not stop those without my MD saying so. There are companies that sell high grade oils that are not MLMS. I have read articles that Egyptions as well as many other cultures did use oils in the past because those were all they had, (I believe young living took that point over the top to try to get the religious sect to buy) then, so I believe oils can help, but would never depend on them solely. Also I wanted to point out that people on disability are very vulnerable to getting involved in these companies, ( because many don't feel good often) and the people recruiting have no idea that by joining a MLM , you can jeopardize losing your benefits. Most, if not all people trying to recruit have no idea about this or they point blank lie. I actually knew enough to ask questions, but it was in fact, young living that my friend tried to get me to sell. I joined because I wanted the oils as a discount. Someone ended up turning me in and thank goodness I could prove that I was the only one who bought and it was a small amount. Anyway sorry this was so long. Thanks for listening. I should have submitted a letter, but the truth is I thought you might read this sooner. Thanks for all you do. Tell the kitties Meow and congrats on your pregnancy.
