I had an interesting thing happen to me this weekend. I try to spread positivity in the World. If I see a baby, I say how cute the baby is, etc. I was in a store and I saw this woman in this beautiful outfit. I complimented her and she said, "I'm not going to join your MLM". I had continued walking past her because the item I was looking for was further down the aisle. She then felt embarassed because she then knew, I wasn't trying to share an opportunity. She apologized, and I told her that I was an anti-MLMer too. She asked if I followed any anti-MLM creators on KZbin. I said yes and mentioned you. She watches your content as well.

In my experience as an immigrant, English is taught in schools of upper class in many countries. I grew up in Cuba but went to Chile when I was 24. All of my "rich" friends had kids in bilingual schools from kindergarten up. Speaking English is definitely a privilege and very well perceived. My case was a bit different, I wanted to learn because I love speaking different languages. In Cuba I had a teacher since I was 10 that my grandma paid so I could learn. My grandma always said speaking English could open many doors and it did. My first job in Chile (Spanish speaking country) was in Customer Service at a big company that needed someone that handled English and Spanish correctly.

As someone with PCOS, I would highly encourage anyone else with this condition to try visiting an endocrinologist, not just a gynecologist. While gynecologists can help mask some PCOS symptoms by prescribing birth control to regulate periods, endocrinologists specialize in hormone levels so they know more about the unique problems PCOS brings. The first time I met with an endocrinologist I cried tears of relief at finally meeting a doctor who explained why PCOS made it so difficult for me to lose weight rather than the run-of-the-mill advice I'd gotten from every other doctor to simply eat less. Truly a gamechanger.

As an Argentinian the Mexican story hit a little bit too close to home when they talked about missing people. Argentina had something very similar happening abour fifty year ago. People would go missing due to the military government that we had and an organization calles Madres de plaza de Mayo (Mother's of May square) was born, whom to this day are trying to find their children and grandchildren. It's sad that México is now having to go through something similar.

This skinny fiber reminds me of pills that were quite popular in the early 2000s. It was literally a capsule with fiber particles inside. When the capsule melted in the stomach the fibre was released and grew to x amount it's size thanks to the water you had to drink with it. Like one of these fun towels that are pressed into funny shapes and that unfold when it comes in contact with water. Just with edible fibers. It wasn't harmful, because it was only something that fluffed in the stomach and gave you a full feeling, but it didn't do anything else. It had no nutrients or other effects. Still, I totally agree that a paediatrician shouldn't support something like that for a teenager.

About the second story, I come from the same background as the girl who wrote and sent the second story. I was also fortunate to have very privileged upbringing and can confirm everything she shared. I’ve lived in the US for 22 years. The class divide in developing countries is astronomical. There’s very few instances in which the “high and low” classes converge, and almost never in a social setting. Even MLM companies fit into one or the other and it’s true that MK doesn’t exist in high society (maybe when it first came to Mex but I can’t remember.) MLMs are definitely not a huge thing and the reps are not that aggressive in my experience. Fun fact, my mom still has an orange pitcher and a couple other items she got at a Tupperware party she attended 40+ years ago (I’m 48). I’m glad this story brought some awareness to a little aspect of the social and economic lives, and the accompanying tragedies of so many countries like Mexico. There’s always somewhere out there willing to help spread the message. I’m married to a doctor and stay home, and have been close to being sucked in a few times. In respect with the moderator I’m going to guess she’s not completely aware of how the MLMs really work and she was just trying to make the “searching mom” feel reassured and empowered, in my opinion. Thank you for all you do. For those who pray, please pray for the missing ones and their families.

I couldn’t help but think how much more advantageous it would be to sell locally sourced products. Whether it’s bought wholesale from a coal factory, nor handicrafts, foods, etc. Heck, half of those products are likely made in Mexico! That way any capital isn’t being sent to some big American corporation, and the money goes back into the local community. That would help empower local communities, improving the lot of everyone there, making them less vulnerable. It just makes sense, and I do hope someone from the organization sees that.

Seeing that skinny fiber bottle brought back all kinds of memories. I ordered this crap because a friend of mine said it was working for her. I got 3 bottles (that's how many you had to order). The pills did NOTHING but make me feel sick all the time. After a couple of times taking them, my husband said no. This is NOT working. I threw them in the trash and never looked back. I have gained a lot of weight over the years due to medical problems. However, I am working on it with diet and exercise. In the last 6 months, I have lost 30 pounds. I have a lot more to go but I am feeling happier and heathier doing it the right way and not trying to lose all the weight in a month. Thank you for all you do. You are a wonderful person. Selling either is something shameful. Now here in the US when someone approaches me with Monat or something similar I say "oh so you are in a business like Avon and Mary Kay! No thanks I actually like good quality products" and they get super embarrassed to be linked with those brands and their poor quality of product and business model

For the influencer marketing thing I think : a) makes them look more legit b) reach a ton of people at once, more than most reps ever could c) play on parasocial relationships (people might think their favourite influencer is involved with the company and likes the products, which again would make it seem more legit and "desirable")

Story#1: I know Amway is the most successful MLM if all times, and after listening to this story, I understand why. They are not cultish. They are a full blown cult, complete with a religious service to boot! With so many products to buy Amway could easily become 'the way of life'. The mandatory brainwash sessions, the pressure to follow the crowd, and the isolation they put you into if you don't follow them, all of these just cemented my opinion. My mother was in Jehovah Witness many years ago (thank God she's out now). This story brings back memories.😬

One of my individual's mother kept asking if she can send me a link to her video. I didn't get the email (sent her my personal one) so she texted me the link. She had just been on a vacation with everything paid for to Mexico and it all sounded a little sketch. I clicked on the link and it's for Legal shield!! This is so awkward but I guess I will just let her know it's not something I'm interested in...she is the sweetest lady and is a bit older since my person is in his fifties. I don't know much about it, but I hate that she may have been taken advantage of. I watched maybe 30 seconds of it and said wait, didn't I just hear this name earlier? 😅 so thank you! ❤❤❤

When I accidentally joined an MLM I 100% relate to the cults "encouraging" you to attend every meeting/webinar/whatever in order to become "succesful". They also said that: "If people say no, it means a temporary no, like 'not now'." Aka They encourage others to keep on trying to recruit others until you convince them to say "yes" ;-;

The Mexico story is heartbreaking. The last time I went back to Mexico to visit my great grandmother before she passed, a decade ago, I noticed her apartment was decked out in Mary Kay decals and products. She was in her 90s at this point, couldn’t really walk down stairs anymore, and had had to move into this smaller Mary Kay apartment, I don’t know if because of financial reasons or accessibility reasons. I didn’t ask questions back then but it makes me sick to see how common it actually is for Mary Kay to take advantage of vulnerable people like that in Mexico. I had no idea it was such a rampant thing. I can’t ask her anymore but I just hope my great grandma dropped Mary Kay sometime in the last 9 years of her life

HOLY SHIT. That is Beyond illegal. I agree with your fundamental point (have had friends who lost weight due to physical illness told to keep doing whatever it is they were doing to keep losing), but seriously that is so so so so far out of line and not usual for a healthcare provider AT ALL. Is there any way you can report that provider?!

Prescribing it would be illegal, dropping an unrecorded side hint about something *maybe* someone could try, is just immoral. It would happen less if we could put an end to the systemic problem of medical fatphobia. That is where the anger should be directed. Luckily the doctor I have now doesn't ascribe everything to the number on the scale, but it is still unbelievably rampant.

My ex was in amway almost the entire 7 years we were together. I’ve been to one of those conventions. I’ve listened to those damn motivational CDs over and over and over. Not to mention, Rich DeVos is a founder of amway. His sister is Betsy DeVos. Google them if you don’t know who they are. Their family history is…interesting. There’s another guy associated with amway, Grant Cardone who is also a Scientologist, he showers nude with his equally nude 9 year old daughter. So. There’s that. My ex defended him because “amway is full of great people”.

The funny thing about Amway is the DeVos family (who owns Amway) own a ton of other businesses and do other jobs. Betsy DeVos was the secretary of education (and did a terrible job) and owns a bunch of private schools. If Amway was this great life-fulfilling beacon, the owners would only do that because it would be something they’re devoted to and passionate about. But they’re not fulfilled by Amway, so they run a bunch of other businesses. So the owners themselves aren’t even in the cult of Amway like all the people at the bottom of the pyramid are. If they aren’t drinking the Kool-Aid of their own company, why are you?

I needed foundation so there I was in one of those big stores (Michels? I think) when a woman approached me and began complementing me. I must have looked absolutely chocked. I'm from Sweden, we don't do small talk with strangers. Before I had a chance to say anything she started talking about her company and how good their makeup was. Me: stares in confusion. She: "blablabla work from home, extra money, time freedom". Me: *starting to be weirded out* "Thanks, but no. I'm more than happy with my current work and 6 weeks payed vacation. I really don't need a second job and I rather spend my free time working out than working another business"

Skinny Fibre brought back a memory. I am from the UK and there was a product like this sold in shops around the early 2000's. I don't know how well it ever did but at the height of Size 0, low rise jeans, You Are What You Eat fatphobia it didn't stand out amounts the general culture of the time where bottles of Slim Fast shakes were sold in the same chiller as Panda Pops. A girl in my school tried it but even as a teenager it seemed the two glasses of water it required you to drink before meals had more to do with feeling full before eating

The 'skinny fibre' pill sounds like a similar product to one juice+ sells which is some kind of plant extract that expands into a gel so it does technically 'fill' your stomach but the reason it's important to take it with a fill glass of water is because it can cause a throat obstruction if it doesnt flush down far enough! Safest thing is not to take it at all of course and I hate that the huns will never tell you the dangers, mostly because they dont know themselves 😕

I did the Amway thing for a bit - they had XS drinks, but not the power bars or popcorn yet. I could say so much, but yes, most of what she said is what I also went through. Additionally though, our Tuesday nights included prayer at the beginning of the meeting. I'm not Christian and was put off by that. When I asked the top of my Upline group why we had to pray since I'm not Christian, he told me that I had no morals without spirituality. I told him that I am spiritual, just not religious. He said they're the same thing, and when I pointed out they aren't, he deleted our entire forum thread and kicked me off the forum. His closed minded need for control was the last straw for me. Never went back.

Thanks! I wish you would also talk about employees of mlms. My cousin worked for AMWAY in import/exports, so not directly shilling products but supporting their operations. She is explicit in not caring about their evil because they paid her well and let her build a good life. The "if not me then someone else, so I should benefit." She interacted directly with the DeVos family and was always aware of them undermining public education and their very conservative platform. She claims to be liberal, but I guess her values then stopped at the paycheck. Although she supported them for a decade, she did leave eventually and now helps those facing food insecurity. I am really proud of her attonement but still annoyed that everyone only celebrates her success and never calls her out for supporting an objectively cruel company for so long, and the enrichment of the DeVos family that is in opposition to all the values we were raised with.

I have a meeting with one of the recruiters for a meeting to discuss ways we can get customers. And now, we ha e Melaluca really trying their luck with trying to sue because their reps screwed up and pitched their very obvious MLM to Hannah without doing their research on who they were trying to hire 😂. Even the reps failed to make a compelling come-back when Hannah pointed out they're not just some "shopping club" but a flat out MLM.

Even the US specific stuff seems to work. When Young Living rather recently came to Finland, the newspapers and TV were making news about this scam that provides medical misinformation. Seems like the journalists here are following anti mlm content. However Tupperware is a fairly well respected, established thing, Oriflame doesn't raise any eyebrows, and I've seen quite a few Partylite items for sale on Facebook marketplace. Also my retired aunt was recently in an mlm. I only learned about it from my mom though, she had bought something, but obviously my aunt wasn't trying to recruit everyone, since I even didn't know she's in an mlm (I don't know which). I think the older mlms are here much more product based. The same people have said about many other countries. So I guess that also makes less horror stories. Or perhaps people are more hesitant to tell them?

I'm late to this so it's unlikely anyone will see it, but I can explain the weekly meetings for Amway. The meetings are every week because that is where you bring new prospects to "see the plan" and then afterward there is another meeting for Amway IBOs only where they will talk about a new product, a book, a tool, a tip on how to be successful or give recognition to someone who sponsored someone recently, hit a new level etc. So the second meeting after is for motivational purposes for IBOs. Going to the first one every week even when you're already "in the business" is to create the illusion for new people that the person speaking is very successful and that there are a lot of people that want to listen to them. It's also to make sure there are reactions to their jokes or questions they ask. Since it's the same talk every time, you know where those are going to be.

if that's what it was, and nothing else in it, i don't think it's a big deal to take if you have trouble with binge eating (it's something a doctor recommend to me at one point, but NOT an mlm version - you can buy it in bags, not just in pills, and i sometimes mix some into fruit smoothies) what i mean is, if the doctor knew what was in it (and if it IS just fiber), that's possibly something they might have recommended or approved anyway, regardless of mlm psyllium IS safe for children, if used appropriately (it MUST be taken with water! it pulls in liquid, and if there's no water, and you take a lot, it could cause problems) a brand that sells psyllium is Metamucil Psyllium has been used safely in children and adolescents, and was shown to improve hypercholesterolemia (Psyllium Supplementation in Adolescents Improves Fat Distribution & Lipid Profile: A Randomized, Participant-Blinded, Placebo-Controlled, Crossover Trial) something else it could possibly be (another fiber supplement) is glucomannan Children: Glucomannan powder and capsules are possibly safe for most children when taken with plenty of water for up to 4 months. But taking glucomannan products without water, especially as tablets, is likely unsafe. These products might cause choking and other serious side effects when taken without water. (WebMD)

Paying for traditional forms of advertising even including sponsorships and KZbin ads are for legitimacy as well as to open new markets or expand in markets with lower saturation. I've always assumed they're in the US? But could be totally wrong. I get ads for scam products, sometimes a motivational speaker or some shady stuff (I guess those are because I also watch atheist content and Weird Reads With Emily Louise who makes deep dives into paranormal and new age stuff). But then I also get legit ads for local companies, as I'm not from the US, so those are very country specific. The algorithm also isn't as good as they say. Like I'm an atheist watching atheist content, but because they often talk about spirituality and religion, it seems I'm getting classified as a person interested in spirituality. The same with a deep dive into a new age scam makes the robots think I'm into new age. So the robots are unable to recognize context. They also don't understand sarcasm, irony or such nuance. Which means anyone watching anti mlm can be classified as having an interest in these companies.

Hi Hannah, big fan of yours! I was just watching the video and when I heard the story with LegalShield, I felt the need to leave a comment here. MLMs getting into influencer marketing has been happenning for quite a few years now. I'm from Romania (but I'm pretty sure I've seen other European influencers doing this) and quite a lot of our most-known influencers have partnered at some point with Avon, they even sponsor quite a lot of important events from the social media world as well. I'm not sure if this is from the fact that, here at least, MLMs don't have the same bad reputation as in the US (especially ones like Avon, Oriflame, Herbalife, Amway etc.). Almost all of us grew up with the Avon and Oriflame leaflets and our family members would even send us to school with them to ask classmates if they want to buy anything (and don't even get me started on the idea of convincing our moms or aunts to become Avon reps just so we could have a discount for the products, or even dreaming of doing this ourselves). In here, the focus on recruitment isn't as big or maybe it's just done in a different way that somehow isn't seen as badly as it should be. However, I don't believe that these influencers don't know what they're promoting (especially the ones who are always saying loud and proud that they research the companies that they partner with), so I try to unfollow them whenever I see MLMs on their feed or even message them to let me know what type of company they're supporting. Anyways, I think this is a bit of a longer comment than I expected and I hope it makes sense, I just stopped eating and started typing as soon as I heard the story so I didn't have any specific idea that I wanted to share :)))) keep up the good work as always!!
