My cousin tried joining an MLM.. She had already put in like $500 for “classes” I was the one who was able to get her to see what a scam it truly was. All it took was 1 look at their website. They are ALWAYS just filled with repetitive jargon re-worded to make it seem different with NO contact info. And just like you pointed out, they targeted her because she is a single mother and at the time struggling to find a job. I was shocked, disgusted, and disappointed. I never thought it would be so easy for someone to fall for these MLMs until it hit close to home. They are so despicable!

I worked for "Vector Marketing" selling Cutco Knives (which were actually really good knives). I was only 18 and had moved out on my own at 17, and had very little guidance. After I purchased the test set, I managed to sell 7 sets of knives, and then my uncle explained to me what was going on. Basically they wanted you to sell your family friends then gave you no support. Long story short I had a friend of mine buy 25 full sets of knives, got my commission check, and then he returned all of them. My boss (his name was Ryan Davoren, drove a wicked nice car, sharp dressed, good looking, total asshole) called me and left a voicemail SCREAMING when he got word of the return, and called multiple times a day every day for weeks. My buddy got his money back, we split the 2500 dollar commission check, and the other people who bought the knives actually ended up keeping them and still have them 15 years later. It ended up as a win win for me.

I got roped into going to a MLM company’s like 2 hour long recounting meeting. And they were like “you can get 10% for every sale, 5% for recruiting other staff, and this and that….” And then later they were like “there’s this really cool elite club you can join called the Thound’s Club, and that’s when you make over $1000 for the company every day for two weeks and you’ll get this…” and like wait a minute. 10% of $1000 is $100. So like… you would be making $100 a day in this ELITE club. Which, assuming you work 8 hours (which I doubt anyone works that little in an MLM and actually earns money) is only $12.50/hour. Which is…. The minimum wage in my state. And is pretty shit wages in general, especially if you have hours of unpaid overtime to actually get to that point. Like… y’all just predators.

The thing with scams like this is that the obvious scammy-ness is itself part of the scam. It helps self-select for gullible people, since anyone who falls for the obviously scammy ad will be less likely to question the scam later on, and so less likely to waste the scammer’s time.

not to mention' like people like charli damelio, she is really genuine. i never liked her, but she accepted me on her private account and wow, she’s so surreal. like there’s a teenager, a 17 year old behind all of the hate that she gets. and I never understood why she got hate, so I asked the haters and they never really gave me a justified answer. charli still goes to school, and all she does is post dumb tiktok dances like every other 17 year old. i didn’t even know she was a competitive, flexible, dancer like me, I just thought she posted dumb tiktok dances, but when I learned that it made me think a whole new light on her. dancing is her passion, just like me, I didn’t even know she did dancing competitions when she was younger, but she did. i do not think people know how hard dancing comps are, we train for a whole year, pushing ourselves to limits to try to make our choreo as complex, but not too complex where we get judged too hard for the skill, and we train day and night until we are so sore we can’t walk. & it all leads up to two minutes on stage, two minutes, that can change our life, we either get a horrible score, or a great one that moves us up in the ranks. i saw charli’s comp videos and it’s amazing, her choreo is amazing, her skill is amazing, and I can really tell when she said she was dancing since she was 4, she really was. the only reason people hate her is because she has “hype”, which is the dumbest thing I’ve every seen. all of the horrible people chad chad does videos on, I go to their tiktoks and i see not one hate comment.. but when I go to charli’s page, who just spreads positivity and has been in zero scandals and just shows her haters love, I can not go in the comments without seeing either one really dumb fan page or a hater, and it’s really sad, she has no genuine fans. she’s a 17 year old who just loves to spread positivity and dance, and I do not see not one person hyping her up.. I find it so sad. like her private account is so.. sad. like I never realized it until now. charli also donates a lot of the money she does receive, and she does deserve the money way more than the preadators, racists, and homophobes that have a huge platform on tiktok, take advantage of it, and gets no hate. charli doesn’t delete not one hate comment, and the people on tiktok that actually deserve the hate, delete all their hate comments. like I just wish people would realize how pure charli is. when zoe Laverne was her age she told her haters to die, she cheated on her bf, she said the n word, and gaslighted people saying she was in a mental hospital bc of her haters, and now when I go to her page I see “why did we ever hate her” just because she’s pregnant.. like it’s disgusting. people need to give the genuine creators, charli, and other ones too some love, and stop taking them for granted. some day, charli is really going to be gone because the hate is going to get to her, and some day, the genuine lgbtq and poc supporters on tiktok are also going to be gone because cis white straight males are getting to their profiles and bringing them down. we really need to show creators that deserve it love, before they’re gone.

Considering it's an MLM, I assumed they meant they made, like, 10 cents last week. I see so many people falling into these schemes, and I want to feel bad for them. But, at the same time, they immediately try to get their own downline and will use some of the most despicable tactics to do so. Supplement and essential oil MLMs have to be the absolute worst ones. I am surprised I didn't here the words "empowering women" and "boss babe triple pink diamond supreme" or whatever.

For those of you worrying about how to tell if something is an MLM, see if they make most of their money from recruiting others or from the product. A business will be selling a product/service, MLMs make money from their employers.
@leahdavis94343 жыл бұрын
And if they claim to be making most of their money from product but they only advertise how to recruit or how you can make so much for selling for them, check how much product "consultants" are required to personally buy. They inflate the numbers by making them buy like $300 of merchandise every month

My Aunt joined an MLM because like one of your sisters, she's got 9 kids from two marriages, and she was struggling to take care of all of them, and so she thought it would help her, but obviously it just made everything else way worse for her :( We've been doing our best to help her and her kids, and we've been baby sitting some of them at a time to like give her a break because she's struggling a lot.
@genericsocks7542 Жыл бұрын
I’ve always wondered how someone gets to that position. If you are not incredibly wealthy, why in the world wouldn’t you be using protection?!? I get that stuff happens and one kid might pop out. But when you have 3 or 4 or 6 kids already and you are in the middle class I don’t see how you can continue to mess up and get pregnant when you know FOR SURE that you will be raising all these kids in poverty due to your own negligence. Not to mention you have to go through the agony of pregnancy and childbirth over and over again. Anyway, I don’t mean to completely shit on chad chad’s sibling and your aunt but I have never been able to understand the thought process behind that many kids. There’s no way you can parent all those kids effectively either even if you were a billionaire.

@@genericsocks7542I know this is old, but I live in Texas and there are a lot of fundamentalist Christians who are taught to believe it’s up to god how many kids they have. Also, I get the feeling that they're inflating their "income". Sick dude, you may have sold $20,000 worth of insurance last week, but I feel like that isn't your actual income. Like if you work at a Mercedes dealership or something I'm sure you can sell over $100,000 in cars in a day, but that doesn't mean that's your take home. Insurance has to have a pool of money to actually pay out sometimes so most of that money they are "making" has to end up as capital for the business...unless it's just a full on ponzi scheme.
@Defenestrationed2 жыл бұрын
You can 100% make a shitton of money in MLMs and some of them aren't exaggerating (well, that much). The people in the top like .1% of MLMs do make bank off of the people they recruit (and the people those people recruit, etc., etc.).
@lugoorstar2 жыл бұрын
the thing is that they make a 70-75% premium beforehand. so if you sing 20 people and all 20 buy insurance for 9 months at 1,000, you will get 15,000 dollars in one week!. the problem is that you're not an "agent" you're a *broker* and if any one cancels the insurance plan that you made whith *a real insurance provider* you will pay every single cent that the clients were supposed to. so meanwhile you can make 15,000$ in one month you can also loose up to 1800,000$ in between the duration of the pla if the same clients refuse to continue whith the plans for any reason. that's why the top people just wait for the people under them to make money, because they have nothing to loose that way, unlike the real workers.

I was looking for real work opportunities. They wouldn't straight out give me their company name. They try to invite you to coffee shops and highlight all these benefits, but they are so vague.
