my theory is that they don't get their flowing mane from age or from magic , but from the amount of magic ,they are using at the time for example : celestia and Luna are moving sun and moon all day and night so they always have flowing mane twilight's mane only flows when she moves the sun and cadence's flows during the changeling attack when she defeats the changelings I'm sorry for mistakes I'm not English or American or whatever 😉

Remember on the first episode. When nightmare moon turned back to Luna, her hair was flat and not waving. I think you have to earn it. She didnt earn it and neither did flurry heart. Plus in the flash backs Celestia's hair was just pink.

Cadence should have her flowing mane by now considering Luna was younger then her when Cadence was an allicorn before. So Cadence should have had it, but she doesnt, so I think you have to earn it and Luna and Tia have more than earned it.

Popping in here it's proven (by the comics) when Celestial was pink when she was younger, but we still don't know the reason why her hair color changed to rainbow-like colors. And for Cadence my small theory is that due to her past she doesn't have wavy hair and let me explain Cadence was adopted by Earth Ponies when she was young and I highly doubt that the Earth Ponies would have anything about learning how to fly (making this her background story canon in the episode Three's A Crowd) and then having to become to learn how to do magic and learn how to fly must make it hard to get by.

When Princess Twilight drank the potion Zecora gave her, she saw a flashback. It was the flashback of Nightmare Moon's banishment. In the flashback, we all saw that Luna's hair, or mane, and it was wavy and sparkly. In season 1 episode 2 however, she transformed back into Luna. But her hair wasn't wavy or sparkly. You stated that the cause of Celestia and Luna's hair waving and sparkling was because they were much older than the other alicorns, but it doesn't seem that way.

To have floaty hair you need two things: Alicorn magic and you have to be over 1000 years old. Cadence and Twilight don't have floaty hair because they aren't over 1000 years old. Maybe that is why Luna had in the season 1 episode 2 other hair, Celestia had Lunas magic and her hair stopped flowing. As she gave up her magic she didn't lost her magic 1000 years. I think it takes time to get a flowing mane to a normal mane. Just a theory, but it would make scence why Twilights mane in "Twilights Kingdom" didn't flow.

If Shining Armor was an alicorn then she might have been full alicorn without receiving her wings or horn or either. Wait now that I think about it Princess Cadance was a pegasus first so either way Flurry Heart would have a 50/50 chance of being an alicorn.

So stated baby ponies take on genes from not only parents but other family members (Mr and Mrs cake are earth ponies and their twins are a unicorn and a pegasus because they had ancestors that were a uncorn and pegasus) And if Big Mac and Sugar Belle get married, well EVERY APPLE IS AN EARTH PONY... so this would break tradition and give the couple a 50/50 chance on having Earth or Unicorn babies. So since Cadance was changed into an Alicorn, and married a Unicorn (and since Twilight is also a new Alicorn) it gave Flurry the 50/50 chance of being born either as a unicorn or an Alicorn. Judging by everyone's shock I think they expected a baby Unicorn.

Let me suggest something: The mane might be something that only occurs in born alicorns when they reach a certain age or power level. Twilight and Cadence are both made alicorns, and while Flurry Heart is a born alicorn, she's also the offspring of a made alicorn (who was a pegasus) and a regular unicorn, so while she does have the alicorn gene and the traits from Cadence, she's not pure-blooded like Celestia and Luna. Cadence, Twilight, and Flurry Heart might never get the regal, flowy, sparkly manes that Celestia and Luna have because they're not full-blooded unicorns. Two are the product of alicorn magic and the third is the offspring of one of the made alicorns and a unicorn. "But, Finns!" I hear you say: "What about when Celestia said that Flurry Heart is the first born alicorn in Equestrian history?" Good memory, dear audience, and this brings up other theory. The theory is that Celestia and Luna were born before the creation of Equestria. If you remember from the Hearth's Warming episode, it stated that unicorns governed the celestial bodies, but it took a lot of them and it was a great effort to do so. So where were Celestia and Luna at this time? My guess is that they were in another land where alicorns are born and live. They came to Equestria for whatever reason and became the alicorn gods they're known as today. So if Luna and Celestia weren't born in Equestria and only immigrated from another land, then, yes, Flurry Heart is the first alicorn born in Equestria.

I think the reason Twilight's mane didn't change in "Twilight's Kingdom" is that the power she harboured wasn't her own. If power level is what causes the sparkly wavy mane (I think you're half right, and it's a combination of age and power level), it must have to be that alicorn's own power, not extra power given to them by (an)other alicorn(s).

Mind Stormer no no so you know how twilight was born a unicorn and cadence was born a Pegasus well when Celstia(Im not sure if luna helped very sorry) so Celstia added Pegasus geans to twilight and unicorn geans to Cadence for flurry im not to sure maybe she was going to be a pagasus but Cadences Unicorns geans turned flurry heart into an alicorn so no they were not all created in a lab

Like their mane changes as they age due to the exposure from their higher power/magic over time and eventually seeps into their mane and tail.

It does actually have to do with age. If you look to when Celestia was younger, she had a regular pink mane just like how Luna's man was blue in Part 2 of Episode 1, Season one. As Celestia grew older, she got more colors in her mane and it started becoming wavy. Luna won't get more colors in her hair like Celestia because she is the ruler of the night and night doesn't have many colors like the morning would.

You're forgetting that Celestia and Luna's hair was normal when they were younger. In a lot of the times that they show the past whether it be when Twilight drank the potion, or just a memory, celestia's hair is just pink, and luna's is just blue, with no waviness to it.

If twilight and the crystal heart spell is canon, cadance was a Pegasus, shining is a unicorn. If Pegasus cadance had a kid with shining, it wouldn't be an alicorn, because cadance doesn't have alicorn genetics, BUT now that she's an alicorn, when she has a kid with shining, she gives flurry her Pegasus genetics, and shining gives flurry his unicorn genetics, and cadance's altered genetics allow flurry to be an alicorn.

I think what happened is in the second episode, when the mane 6 defeat Nightmare Moon, she was smaller purple and without a flowing mane (what else is new.) I think that’s what happens when a princess gets defeated by the elements of harmony, they loose some of their height and color and mane style, then it comes back in a few months.

you have to be a certain age to get ur hair to flow. Celestia has been princess for over 1,000 moons and so has Luna. it just took a bit of time to get her hair back wavy when she was reformed with the elements. thats y cadence and twilight don't have wavy hair.

I still think it's a symbolic representation of their powers. Celestia's hair represents rays of the sun and Luna's looks like the night sky. None of the other Alicorns have specific elemental powers like that. Twilight's hair looked like that for a time when she had Luna's and Celestia's powers because, well, she had their powers.

My headcannon is that it's something that they consciously control. We've seen that their manes stop moving in the show, and our answer is that it was an animation error, but it only happens when they are tired and/or stressed. Moliminous pointed out in his A Royal Problem that Luna's mane stopped moving after she read the news article. Because she was tired and stressed out, she lost concentration of her mane. The reason I think they do it is to show their power, and their positions as rulers of Equestria. And why not? It would explain the errors, and maybe they'll explain it to Twilight when she takes over Equestria. It is actually a cool theory, I think.

However when she used their magic to lower the moon, her mane started to flow again 3) When Celestia was beaten by Chrisalis, her mane stopped flowing 4) when Luna was purified, perhaps she was magicless so she reverted to child form to regain her magic more efficiently (it is in fact a very often used trait in anime) So, my synopsis is that: 1) they have a lot of magic that constantly flows from their body causing the mane and tail to flow, and Twilight as an element of magic was capable of fully hiding the symptoms 2) magic of moving stars/planets symbolises the flowing time, so perhaps flowing mane is a cosmetic representation of their purpose. When they're weakened or beaten they are not capable of doing so so their manes stop. So to speak, the cycle of day and night stops.

In the book, journal of the two sisters, it said whenever they first raised the sun and moon, a transformation occurred which gave them their cutie marks. I think it has to do with magic from the sun and moon. We've seen magic in ponies, it's not impossible to have it in nature or anything else.

Celestia and Luna have wavy manes for one simple reason... they're both sisters, thousands of years old. They're taking the place of their once ruling parents, which means it's genetic. No other ponies in Equestria have wavy manes, and since they're both sisters and Cadence doesn't have a wavy mane, it's a big possibility

I tend to think it is sort of two part. An alicorn gets the potential for a self waving mane as they get older (probably a powerful unicorn would as well, except the amount of time needed to develop one may be beyond normal unicorn lifespan). However the mane only actually WAVES when the pony who it belongs to is using strong strong magic. That would explain why Twilights started waving when she got the powers from the other three and when she had to raise the sun. And why Cadence and flurry heart don't yet, not only are they too young but they aren't doing spells as massive as the sun and moon rising. And to answer the obvious question "why then do Celestia's and Luna's wave ALL THE TIME; what if "raising the sun/moon" also means "keeping it on it's track through the day/night, so it doesn't go too fast or wobble" That is, what if they are feeding magic into the raising spells PERPETUALLY; it's a spell they are casting NONSTOP 24/7 (if Equestria is on a round planet, presumably the moon is up on the opposite side of the world, so that would explain why their manes still wave when they are on "offtime" (like Luna during the day) and they may be such old hat at it by now they can literally keep it going "in their sleep" If it DOES need to always be on, they both simply must have learned to multitask.

I think it's a mixture of things that gives an alicorn a wavy mane - the power the alicorn has, what their cutie mark is ((what their signature magic is)) and how old they are.

Moliminous,.. For a BRIEF moment, when Twilight had all of the Alicorn power of Celestia, Cadence, and Luna, she DID have wavy hair.

I think the flowing manes and tails are a result of manifestation and control over one's magic, wisdom, skills and talents. 1. Princess Celestia: She was a student of Starswirl the bearded and the ruler of Equestria. She has lived more than a thousand of years in Equestria, a period of time long enough to learn how to control things from magic to harmony. That's why she gained her flowing mane and tail much before Luna became Nightmare Moon. We did see that Celestia took over the place of the group of unicorns that used to raise the sun before Celestia's arrival, one of them being Starswirl. It clearly indicates that Celestia was much more powerful than Starswirl. (They can be compared to Starlight and Sunburst. Sunburst and Starswirl have a lot of knowledge. A LOT! But Starlight and Celestia can control their talents. Though Starlight is much behind Celestia. After all, she is the student of Celestia's prodigy.) 2. Nightmare Moon: She was the more powerful, controlling and dominating form of Princess Luna. No wonder, she had this flowing mane and tail. 3. Princess Luna: Having lived as long as Celestia, she too did get enough time to manifest her true talents and skills. But after returning from the moon, she didn't have the flowing mane and tail because she still had to learn a lot from Celestia's experiences. Though she was awesome at raising and lowering the moon, her experiences in the dream realm gave her the right to get her flowing mane and tail. Also, controlling Tantabus made her even more powerful than Celestia, and that explains why she has more sparkling mane and tail, and she's the only pony with sparkling hooves and transparent mane and tail, except Nightmare Moon. 4. Mistmane: She's obviously the most talented pony to have ever existed in all of Equestria. She has such a nice composure and her control over everything was way beyond perfect. She was manifested by everything required for the flowing sparkling mane and tail, even before she visited the finest magic school. 5. Princess Twilight Sparkle: She got the flowing mane and tail, only when she acquired the all powerful alicorn magic of Princess Celestia, Princess Luna and Princess Mi Amore Cadenza, or when she used Celestia's and Luna's powers. Also, when she's manifested by her own magic- The magic of friendship, through the use of the Elements of Harmony, she and her friends sometimes get that flowing manes and tails. A few honorary mentions: 1. The Cutie Mark Crusaders (when they got their cutie marks) 2. King Sombra (and his shadow form as well) 3. The Changelings (of course when they change forms) 4. Cadence and Shining Armor (manifestation of love magic during thier wedding) 5. The Daybreaker (in the dream of Starlight Glimmer) 6. Stygian (engulfed by darkness) 7. Tantabus (in Luna's dreams, when it becomes powerful) 8. The headless horse (in Scootaloo's dream) (It didn't have a head, and therefore, it didn't have mane, but it did have a tail that looked exactly like Luna's tail.) Also, Starswirl the bearded and Twilight were not as talented and powerful as Mistmane, Celestia and Luna. For Starswirl, it can be explained by the fact that he needed a group of unicorns to raise the sun and his time travel spell was also very inefficient. Celestia and Starlight were better at these things respectively. As for Twilight, she is good at the magic of friendship and that's what made her an alicorn princess. But she still has a lot to learn, as seen in the episode "What about Discord?" where she became 'The Princess of Jealousy'. That's why Celestia asked her to stay with her friends, just as Luna stayed with Tantabus and Cadence stays with Shining Armor in the Crystal Empire, the kingdom of love. And finally, I have no idea why Starlight Glimmer doesn't have a flowing mane and tail. The only hint I get is from the episode "Every little thing she does". Her 'Fiducia Compelus' spell was quite terrible. Oh, and these are only my theories. You're free to disagree. There's something more that I noticed. The only two ponies that are not alicorns and have the flowing manes all the time are Mistmane and King Sombra. And there's one more thing that's common. It's that both Mistmane and King Sombra are the only unicorns with curved horns. And there's a great evidence of magical manifestation in King Sombra. It's that in the episode 'The Crystal Empire' when Cadence was growing weaker and her shield was wearing off, King Sombra tried to take advantage of the moment when the shield was absent for a few seconds and tried to infiltrate the empire. But Cadence reinforced her shield and as a result, King Sombra's horn broke but soon enough he was able to regrow it, unlike Tempest, who needed to power of the four alicorn princesses in the Storm King's staff to regrow her horn. He was even able to block the powers of Shining Armor completely which seems to be so impossible, unless you have Chrysalis's throne or you are Discord or Tirek. (It's something that even Starlight Glimmer can't do, though her cutie mark magic and Staff of Sameness thing is amazing. She can alter other's talents and remove their cutie marks making them weak, but completely blocking the powers of any pony as strong as Shining Armor takes a lot of power.)

well i think that it cant ave anything to do with age because when twilight ad a flashback when she drank the white potion it showed celestia and luna fighting when she became nightmaremoon. but when luna was saying how their can be only one princess in equestria, she had a flowing main and this was before the time she had regular hair

I think this theory makes a lot of sense, but I want to put another point to it. In season two, A Canterlot Wedding, Cadence's mane was wavy after reuniting with Shining armor and knocking the changelings away. After that, all we see is her mane as normal, I just wanted to put that out there, the fact that Cadence's mane was also once wavy, but then returned to normal after.

I would agree with the age thing,but when Celestia and Luna gave up their magic to twilight to hide the magic from Tirek. Their hair became static, nor did their age change. THOUGH I would say it would have to deal with not only "age", but maybe their magic wisdom which they gained through years and years of experience and knowledge. Twilight can wield only one element from the Elements of Harmony at a time (through the help of her friends which makes her most powerful) while Celestia and Luna could have possibly been able wield all of them together in the past before Twi and her friends came along. Celestia and Luna are literally the manifestation of Equestia's Natural Balance in their world. Maybe? It's cool speculating anyway even if their isn't a definite answer.

My theory is that it depends on magic. When luna stops being nightmare moon, she is weak and has plain blue hair. When twilight has celestia's power, her hair flows. Cadence isn't really stronger than Luna and celestia, so her hair dousnt flow much, but it does when she defeats chrisalis. Flurryhearts hair dousnt flow because although she has lots of magic, she is young and dousnt have her full potential

How I interpreted Luna's strange age reversion in Season 1, as the Elements of Harmony going through and 'fixing' her problem. That is, the source of her evil was her jealousy of Celestia. It's possible this jealousy started very early on, as we haven't seen much of their past. Well, besides the two parts we've seen of their past that is. Discord's reign and Luna turning into Nightmare Moon. So, what the elements did was strip her of all her powers and this caused her to take a form that fitted that. As she 'grew up' in the metaphorical sense, the elements gave her her magic back. Essentially, she wasn't aged back, she was just forced to take a younger form. Is it possible that you're interpretation is the correct one? Yes, but it's just as likely as mine being the right one, or both, or neither. We don't really know. At least, until there's a canonical reason why Celestia and Luna both have fancy wavy hair.

I think it's because they generate so much magic that they have to release the pent up energy. Twilight is the element OF magic so her body is better equipped to contain her magic without expelling it. Celestia and Luna NEED to use their magic, like all the time, so they cast a pretty much constant spell that makes their hair wave.
