There are at least TWO Equestrias, and maybe more. The older one is where Celestia and Luna ruled together at Royal Sister Castle, near present day Ponyville, after the Crystal Empire went missing. The other is the newer and current one, where its ponies only know Celestia as their ruler, ruling in Canterlot. Crystal Empire is the former ancient Capital of the equestrians (aka Ancient Equestria). A series of civil wars, betrayals, deceptions, shapeshifters, and events caused a series of events that ended in its disappearance. When the Capital went missing, the Pony Kingdom/Empire that also includes other equestrians such as griffons, yaks, and so on… went into a breakdown, as each region started to wander on their own. One by one, the Ancient Equestria gone into pieces. Later, a group of three Pony Tribes managed to achieved an unpleasant stable peace, but even that peace later on ended up being destroyed as cold weather came. After a long travel to find a new place (which is probably their old place anyway), a lot of fights, and being frozen. The Three Tribes ended up agreeing to cooperate on building a new country named "Equestria", which probably was named after the old Equestria, either they conciously know it or not. The story is later on told in each Hearth's Warming Eve by current day ponies at Canterlot. Later on, to improve the relationship between the Three Tribes. Celestia was asked to be their 'Stranger King' or to be more precise, their Stranger Princess. The tale had no mention of Princess Luna eventhough it is in a Season 2 episode. It probably was moved from Season 1 to Season 2. But maybe the final editors of My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic wanted to make it clear, there are at least TWO countries named Equestria. So… Ancient Equestria had Crystal Empire as its Capital. With Sunset Shimmer possibly as their Queen. Old Equestria had the Royal Pony Sisters Castle as its Capital. With Celestia and Luna as their Princesses. Current Equestria had Canterlot as its Capital. With Celestia as their Princess. When the Crystal Empire returned, Celestia decided to move her Embassy back to the pony's equivalent of Xenogears' Lost Jerusalem (aka Earth).

King Sombra also wield dark Alicorn magic so his curse it was as powerful as to make the entire Empire disappear!

The Windigoes might have swooped in on the re-appearing empire because of the lack of unity at the time of the re-appearance.

I have always thought that the Wendigoes were the lost alicorn tribe. The time table for the Wendigoes first showing up lines up with all the alicorns of old vanishing. Perhaps all the pony infighting drove the alicorns mad and made them into the Wendigoes leaving only Celestia and Luna, fillies too young to be caught up in it, from going Wendigo.

JakeSpacePirate E The Journal of the Two Sisters implies their had been a civilization of alicorns before, but it disappeared without the journal explaining the disappearance. Leaving just Celestia and Luna. There are also various statues and pieces of art in pony ruins that show alicorns that preceded Celestia and Luna. All these alicorns vanished without explanation before Celestia and Luna came under Starswirl's care. They were fillies when they came under his care, assuming they reach adulthood at normal rates the alicorns disappeared no more than a dozen years before Starswirl took custody. And we know he took custody while the founders mentioned in the Hearth's Warming play were all still alive and trying to form the united nation.

I had the same idea that u had about the crystal empire with the windagos I also caught during the crystal empire episode part one when the mane 6 were running to the empire sombra made the same noise as what the windagos make when they hear ponies fighting

Except Wendigos are clearly a Sirens, and they were already banished during the fall of Cristal Empire. Also sealing empire was contradictory to Sombra goal.. though there is a explanation for that. First of all check who really have curved horns. It was strong clue that he wasn't real.

The Traps for the Crystal Heart in Crystal Tower / Crystal Palace at Crystal Empire, seemed to meant for King Sombra, and King Sombra did NOT build them. Because Twilight Sparkle basically has a lot of similarities to King Sombra, the trap mistaken her for King Sombra. In short, the builders of the trap wanted to trap Sombra. They used the Crystal Heart as a bait, and in the same time it also still powers the Crystal Empire in a Low Power mode. Once Sombra taken the bait, the trap quickly encased Sombra in dark crystals. Noticed on how weak Sombra is to the Crystal Heart, and how the dark crystals could hold him. So when Sombra heard the alarm, he knew that he better be quick on reaching the Heart, or else it would be fully incased in dark crystals. Celestia doesn't exactly know on what happened to the Crystal Empire, she only hear: Sombra was defeated, he cursed the Empire, then the Empire vanished. Or maybe cursed, vanished, and then defeated. But they blocked out the image of his attackers, implying those two were ANOTHER PAIR of 'Alicorns'. Twilight Sparkle seemed to be a thousand years old or older in her current incarnation, based on Princess Celestia's question: "Did you remember it ever existed at all?" Though some could also hear it as "Few remember it ever existed at all." That being said, I don't believe that Twilight is directly related to Sombra, but she is indeed related to him in some ways or another. It has something to do with the unused concepts for Sonic the Hedgehog (2006) / Sonic '06, cancelled in 2005, but released anyway in 2006 in half finished form. 'SEGA & Sonic Team' unofficially worked on My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic & Equestria Girls, plus other things. Mephiles the Dark is King Sombra's Sonic equivalent. Shadow is still unseen yet. Twilight had no equivalent in the final '06, but part of her designs ended up as Blaze. Twilight was supposed to be Silver the Hedgehog's twin sister; Silver's MLP variant? Flash Sentry. Their mother? Sunset Shimmer. Parts of her showed up in the final version as Sabrina, Elise, Iblis, and so on. '06 was supposed to be about Shadow and 'Sunset', ala Star Wars' Anakin and Padme. So… Shadow and 'Sunset' twin children, who are Silver and 'Twilight'.

The reason the inhabitants of the Crystal Empire feel 'like it was yesterday', because it was indeed yesterday; they time travelled into the future, ala Brigadoon. Notice also when Princess Cadance and Shining Armor arrived at the Empire, it was already pretty much cleaned out of King Sombra's influences; it got no nasty dark crystals and so on. Cadance is good, but NOT _THAT GOOD_. And also the so called 'traps set by King Sombra' seemed to be designed to TRAP KING SOMBRA instead. So I believe it actually goes like this. After King Sombra was banished, there are this group of ponies, which includes a pony whose form was copied by King Sombra; that pony is 'Shadow the Pony'. They cleaned up the Crystal Empire from King Sombra's influences, and then sent the Empire into the future, in the hope that things would've stabilized by then. It does show up from time to time, ala Brigadoon. Because 'Shadow' resembles Mephiles the Dark… er, King Sombra and vice versa, people thought it was Sombra who cursed it to disappear. Crystalings, Changelings, and ordinary Ponies seemed to be related and probably once part of the same race. Crystal Ponies or Crystalings can be seen as the 'robotic race' of ponies. But they probably originally planned to be holograms who CAN NOT LEAVE the boundary of the Crystal Empire. (Translucent Holograms, like Star Wars' telepresence conversation; not unlike Star Trek: Voyager's The Doctor) Currently the Crystalings seemed to be like the Mimeosomes (aka Mims) in Xenoblade X. With New Los Angeles ≈ Crystal Empire and Lifehold Core ≈ Crystal Tower / Crystal Palace / Crystal Heart. The Mims are cloned based on a pre-existing database. Its pony equivalent seemed to be the Crystal Heart, or the Allspark in the Transformers movies (see also TV series' Vector Sigma). See also Mariya Ise (aka Scootaloo:s Japanese Voice Actress) as Lynnlee Kuu in Xenoblade X.

I wonder if the Windigos are sent by some higher power, prehaps a pony king or queen, whose existance has been forgotten over time, maybe their Celestia & Luna's parents yet they are unable to directly act for some reason or another. As for Sombra and the Crystal empire, I believe Celestia purposely had all references to it hidden away to protect her rep, same with Luna as Nightmare Moon, thou with Luna I think Celestia likely had it made so that Nightmare Moon was viewed as a different pony in order to protect her sister, yet the truth comes out when Nightmare Moon is punified and revealed to be Luna. Remember History is written by the victors and they tend to have a habbit of rubbing their victory in the faces of the losers to remind them that they lost the battle/ war or whatever it was they lost.

Celestia hide from ponies fact that they did make a deal with Tirek brother and neutralize his dark powers by making them part of elements of harmony (plus she herself use element of magic). Also Scorpan was technically creator and legal ruler of Equestria and demonic invasion happen recently, just after mass mind-wipe everyone was convinced that it did happen thousand year ago and Chrysalis wasn't Sombra wife. Also Scorpan was backstabby nerd walking in the company of a dragon if someone doesn't know that yet.

The following is a possible background story for Crystal Tower (/ Crystal Palace) and the Crystal Empire. It was based on the original Macross TV series, the DT Eightron TV series, and the Xenoblade X(Cross) game.. Long ago, there was once a race of ponies. In an attempt to escape their current dire situation, they decided to move away. To travel, they use something which I will label as the "Vessel", aka the Crystal Tower (or Crystal Palace or what ever) in the present/future. (It's tempting to say this Vessel is actually symbolized as Clover the Clever's Horn in the Hearth's Warming Eve play. Tempting, but still lacking of data) However, there is not enough room aboard for all of them to live comfortably, as matter in fact, there is not enough room at all, even using a space compression feature (bigger in the inside than in the outside). So they turned themselves into pure crystals, and afterward store their conciousnesses inside the Vessel's Heart, aka the Crystal Heart. The Heart acts as the storage area for their conciousnesses, Crystal Matter storage, the Vessel's Engine, and also the Vessel's 'Main Computer'/'Caretaker'. After their trip. (Long, short, it is unknown) The Vessel landed on the northern region of modern Equestria. It then buried itself halfway into the ground. (like Macross being submerged halfway by its crater lake after Space War I) (Unless it landed somewhere else, before it was moved to its current position. It has shown it is capable of moving to another dimension when it went missing after Sombra was locked. So it has Space Folding capability) The Vessel then started building a small town around it (ala 1978's Superman's Fortress of Solitude). After that, it starts releasing/recreating its occupants one by one as Crystal Ponies. The Crystal Ponies due of the constant care by the Vessel, that acted as their Caretaker, they ended up becoming quite docile, spoiled even. To those Crystal Ponies, there is no world beyond the boundaries of the Crystal Empire, and there is no need to explore it. But some ventured outside the boundaries of their comfortable enviroment, and decided to live out of the land outside. Slowly overtime, those pioneering Crystal Ponies evolved into Earth Ponies, due to their new enviroments, and also due their new foods. Some of them ended up as ancestors of the current day ponies in Ponyville. That is why in a flashback of ancient Crystal Empire, a Crystal Pony looking like Apple Bloom (aka 'Opal Bloom') can be seen. It's tempting to say that the Hearth's Warming Eve play is actually about an Interstellar War, and those six frozen ponies are actually in fact put into statis inside the Crystal Heart, with the Crystal Tower being represented by Clover the Clever's horn. But… The issue is that, the Crystal Ponies are quite monotone, unlike the ponies described in the play, but that might be due to differences in acting style and/or the current Crystal Ponies are just too docile. So tempting, but need more data. That being said, while some Crystal Ponies are the ancestors of the current day ponies, they are NOT the only ancestors… Crystal Empire being a Pony Production Place might be the reason on why King Sombra in the alternate present managed to push Equestria's army to a brink. His army have NO SPECIAL FEATURE; but if he can build an almost infinite army, his strategy would be based on a country's stamina. So capturing the Crystal Empire is like capturing Star Wars' Kamino and its clone factory. There are other clone armies though, liks the Changelings and 'the Pinkies'. 'Opal Bloom' (the flashback Crystal Pony version of Apple Bloom) was seen because Apple Bloom was based on a red head concept of Macross' Minmay Lynn. An illustration of it can be seen, as the redheaded Minmay is wearing a Nyan Nyan Chinese Restaurant yellow delivery unifofm. Her yellow cap uniform survived as a yellow beret in the 1984 movie. See also the Lunar RPG series. Other Minmay variants include ponies such as Twilight Sparkle, Rarity, Cheerilee, Maud Pie, and more.

"The truth about Sunset Shimmer's family" & "The truth about the Crystal Empire". Sunset Shimmer's family ≈ Crystal Empire? Could it be that Sunset Shimmer is closely related to Crystal Empire? She debuted inside the Crystal Palace / Crystal Tower, from a Magic Mirror that was moved there from Canterlot. Perharps unlike the comic, she departed from Crystal Empire instead of from Canterlot? Also why human Twilight Sparkle ('Sci-Twi') came from Crystal Prep Academy, that world's equivalent of Crystal Empire? Instead of some other exclusive or pricy schools? After all, Canterlot High School itself is no The Simpsons' Springfield Elementary. It is also implied Sunset Shimmer is Twilight Sparkle's real mother. With human Sunset probably is involved closely with Crystal Prep. Then with the appearance of Day Breaker, it is possible that Celestia attacked the previous ancient Twilight, who was probably her own big sister. But where is her human version?

Unless Princess Celestia lied or done a 'Obi-wan PoV', she never had much knowledge on the Crystal Empire. It seems much of her knowledge on it are based on hearsay. The two 'Alicorns' defeating King Sombra are often seen by some as Celestia and Luna, due to their body shapes along with the Sun and Moon symbols. But why had them as dark silhouttes? Was there something more shiny behind them? Or were they 'evil' back then? Or was there a hidden story plot? Notice also the smaller one doesn't seem to have much magic, but contributed only once they fired upon Sombra. Nevertheless, when the Crystal Palace / Crystal Tower released its magic, both Celestia and Luna felt as if somekind of burden have been released upon them. So it seems that there is indeed something that the Two Sisters are hiding. As if they had commited a major crime, and not by an accident.

Xenosaga's Kukai Foundation. Stargate: Atlantis' Atlantis city ship. Xenoblade X's Lifehold Core & New Los Angeles. There're probably more, but those will do for now. So Crystal Empire is actually an Ancient Capital, possibly of the ancient Equestria the Great, that is also known as the Crystal Empire. A country that consisted of ponies and other equestrians (e.g. griffons, yaks). After the Capital went missing ala Xenogears' 'Lost Jerusalem' (aka Earth), the entire kingdom went into pieces as each faction went on their separate ways. After it returned, they want to Make Equestria the Great Again! MEGA! Crystal Empire is also a vessel, capable of moving not only physically, but also beyond time and space! King Sombra was based on Sonic the Hedgehog (2006) / Sonic '06's Mephiles the Dark; the keyword here is "Faust". (See The Simpsons' "The Book Job") What is missing is My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic's Shadow the Hedgehog, aka 'Shadow the Pony', whose form was copied by Sombra/Mephiles. A censored and covered up part of Sonic '06, is that the game was supposed to be about the love story of Shadow and another hedgehog girl, who is actually Iblis, aka Mephiles' partner on becoming Solaris. pbs.twimg.com/media/Cp9fgNHUEAESVRd.jpg Of course in the end, she travelled back in time, wiped out Solaris, created a 'grandfather paradox', but got reborn as a normal pony… er, hedgehog. When she thought Shadow was executed for Mephiles/Sombra's crimes, out of anger and sadness, she basically cursed the entire kingdom by turning into a 'Demon, I turned into a raging she-demon'. A lot of things in history are pushed away. Such as the fact that Colombus caused the Native Americans to commit mass suicide, or how George Washington ordered soldiers to shoot other soldiers that were rebelling because they weren't paid (the soldiers were crying as they shot their friends, and Washington only said it was "an example"). Most history is written b the victor, or by generals or presidents. Looking at history written by the citizens is how you learn what is closest to the truth.

But then again America wasn't formed a thousand years ago and has been recording it's history as history. Equestria is at least a thousand years old and I think ponies were rather slow in inventing things to keep track of their history. I'm betting that is why the tales of Luna, the Windigos, and the Crystal Empire faded away. They weren't recorded as history, but were passed down as "Word of mouth." and eventually maybe ponies just stopped truly believing or caring, and just said they were tall tales or legends. Honestly any legend is probably a truth disguised as a lie in Equestria.
