ElijaOxford, you have a lot to learn about MMA making a title like that. But like most, you are probably doing it for a view count. Gracie Jiujitsu isn't Jujutsu aka Jiujutsu (Notice the spelling) and it is sport. The Gracie's got their 'Jiujitsu from the Machado's. The Machado's learned from the Japanese but it was Judo and decided to call it Jiujitsu. So essentially, BJJ is not true Jujitsu. They got out of the UFC because the wrestlers starting learning more about submission grappling. They ducked lots of fights. Gene Lebell (RIP) tried to line up a fight between the best Gracie 'Rickson Gracie' and Gokor Chivichyan, not rules, no excuses. The father (RIP) Rorion Gracie (sp?) told Gene Lebell "We don't fight that kind of fighting" in those exact words, broken English. Gene Lebelle's World Grappling Federation comes from true Japanese Judo and Japanese Jujutsu long before there was BJJ. We're talking over 2000 years before. Nobody is better at Jujutsu "The true JJ" than the Japanese. The only reason Gracie JJ is popular is because they started up the UFC. Their win loss record is not that impressive. Rickson is the only Gracie worth a crap. Royce did okay... The rest, some skill... Suck ass at striking, good grappling but the muscle isn't there very much. If anything, the Machado's are better than the Gracie's are and the Japanese are definitely better the best.

Nice documentary, I train BJJ at Gracie Humaita, Royler Gracie’s brand. I wish I would have started earlier in my life. People debate fight styles all the time, there will never be one style of fighting that is king for every situation or person. If your ego could take it, I would recommend everyone at least try a few classes at a good Jiu Jitsu gym, you will be humbled every time. Especially all of the tough guys out there, go get some 😈

The funny thing is, Jujutsu (meaning the koryu styles of Japan) were effective for war and street self-defense. Judo (aka Kano Jujutsu) helps pave a way to make a modern system of Jujutsu. Gracie Jujutsu came from Judo and Jujutsu. Danzan-ryu Jujutsu came from 6 different koryu styles of Jujutsu and Judo. Plus Hawaiian wrestling, Chin Na (Chinese grappling) and Boxing. Small Circle Jujutsu comes from Danzan-ryu. And Jukido Jujutsu from various classical Jujutsu and Judo. I can go on and on. So many effective modern styles of Jujutsu. Danzan-ryu is one of the most effective. Mostly for self-defense. But no style is better than the other. It’s never the style, it’s always the user. How the user trains and prepares himself for combat is what matters. Also “Brazilian Jujutsu” isn’t a thing in Brazil. It is just called “Jujutsu” (or spelled “jiu-jitsu”). Because there’s nothing unique or “Brazilian” about it. Gracie Jujutsu is much closer to Japanese Jujutsu than many think and Chadi (the judo/jujutsu historian channel) actually made a video showing the details on it.

My only issue with the Gracies is that they haven’t evolved. The techniques in MMA work for a reason and it seems the Gracies are only interested in their selected techniques for self defense purposes. Current MMA techniques can be used effectively in self defense situations.

To say that they are the most important family in martial arts history is a classic Rogan exaggeration. To put it that way is to not recognize the thousands of years preceding them and their contribution. Now, are they the most important family of modern martial arts? That is probably not inaccurate at all, without them we would probably be left in the dark ages of martial arts to a greater degree....
