It seemed that Tony wanted to maintain this mythical-like, invincible image that people painted of him, and it inevitably backfired. His highly unusual training, insane cardio, quick recovery from gruesome injuries, unnecessary weight cut and the "type of guy" memes all made him appear inhuman to people, and he fed into that. The Gaethje weight cut was an example of this. Altogether it led to him having one of the worst falloffs of all time.

I’m 54. I boxed amateur from 7-17 yrs of age. Brawls and street fights teens through early 30s. I haven’t been in a fight now since probably 32. In my head I still believe I could take on anyone. Reality I’d probably get my ass kicked bad! It’s not even ego, it’s just a visual belief in the mind but the body won’t respond the same way it used to. One kid got the best of me in 9th grade and to this day I still want that one back and visualize it. It’s pride also. T has 7 of those now in a row he lays awake at night running back, wanting back. Just one win and I’m back! It’s scary. There is something there that doesn’t allow us to let it go or face reality until it may be too late health wise. I’m nobody but if that’s how I feel at my age, it’s gotta be even harder for these world class athletes who been at the top.

Love this post. Had a similar upbringing. I started boxing at 16 because I was playing hockey, and I was told that if I wanted to advance to higher levels, I had to become an "enforcer" because of my physical style of play. After advancing to a couple of unsuccessful years of semi-pro hockey, I moved on to kickboxing around 20 years old. Bounced at local bars until I was almost 30. The last fight I was in was when I was 29. (At a half century now.) What you said about the relationship between the mind and body is soooo true.... Dead-on, bullseye‼️ I'm 50 now, kickbox for fun at a nearby gym, and still "feel" like I could go 12 rounds with any guy from the street... when in reality, that's not remotely true! 🤣 It's easier said than done... I can't imagine how hard it's been for Tony, seeing as he's been at the highest possible levels! Getting old is a bitch! Time remains undefeated! 👍🏾💯🧠🎯👏🏾

Super happy with that. Can live with that. Can and will DO that till I'm f'ing 90+, and I would only wish and hope that people like y'all and me have something(s) you can dig into - HARD - for... Well, "forever." 👍 If I die today, I'm truly okay with deeply, deeply knowing what I was made of, on an extremely insane level of total reality - and I'm super glad I never went into professional fighting after wrestling, when the UFC started in 93. 6:15 good point. They are called commissions and at some point won’t sanction these fights but it doesn’t yet seem bad enough to expose legal liability. This is where Tony is one of the first guys “too tough for your own good” isn’t just a cliche. He really is. Unfortunately for this to happen he’s going to really need to get massively smashed. Ironically one of the best case example of this is from New York and then refusing to license a former champion in Bob Fitzsimmons. If they can do it over a century ago, they should be able to work it out now. Though I still don’t think we’re there yet but I agree that’s what this will take. He does have a right to make money and he’s making conscious choices to fight. The other side of this is ppl aren’t appreciating what taking fighting away from him will do to him mentally. I know runners who physically were forced to retire from sprinting around my severely 30s just bc it’s a tough grind in Europe and they fell apart. It defined them. They’d rather risk losing bad and injury bc they fear the mental anxiety of no longer doing the one thing they thought they were useful for. It’s legitimately sad. That drove them more than wanting to win hence why they couldn’t hang them up on their own. This happens a lot in boxing too see Evander, James Toney, etc.

Obviously , Tony is not an elderly person but this feels like a similar phenomenon. It’s like the people who believe they can climb Mount Everest but physically they are not up to the task and they end up dying on the mountain. It also could be something like your brain is sort of shielding you from the reality of your physical abilities so your mind can continue to function like it has been. It is a short term assured protection in exchange for a long term unknown risk. If this is the case, his mind is not functioning very clearly and he desperately needs to stop fighting. I’m not a neuroscientist or brain doctor these are just my speculations.

Even if Tony isn't fighting for the UFC he'll still continue fighting some where else. I can see him going till hes 50 cause he just won't give it up. He hasn't won a fight since 2019 and taken brutal losses. It's hard to see.

It’s sad. We all meme’d on Tony, but now we’re begging for him to step away. He has one of the most impressive, and certainly the most violent streaks, arguably in UFC history, but definitely in lightweight history. I think the problem is, he thinks he has something to prove to himself. I hope he either wins, or if he does lose, it’s a decision that he doesn’t get hit too much. Tony, please, retire after tomorrow. You are loved by EVERYONE. It’s time, Tony.

Doesn’t happen to everyone… nobody loses 7 in a row an keeps their job. And of course he’s in denial, rumor has it David Goggins is making him swim the entire river upstream.

Tony's situation is the worst because he took a lot of damage at his best and he is crazy so it's scary now

The answer is yes. A 15 minute long video was not required to answer that question.

it’s tony time⚔️😇

This was a question worth asking in 2021 after he got dominated three fights in a row. It’s not even a question now.

How is this video 15 minutes long when it should just be tommy going "yes"

I’m a huge fan. He looked so good that first round with Chandler. I was rooting for him so bad. It’s so heartbreaking to watch him fight and lose throughout his drastic decline. I don’t want to watch him fight, it’s scary and sad and totally unnecessary at this point.

I think the only way i wanted to watch tony fight again would be something like nick diaz. That workplace been a fight that i would've watched but honestly tony is still one of my favorite fighters but it kills me now to watch him make the walk

Tony is extremely coherent in this presser, more than several years. I think the weight cuts were really hurting him. I’m betting on Tony and will get trolled for this when he loses.

The double weight cut he did before the Justin fight wasn’t the smartest move either.

I think that’s what fucked him

Without a doubt that ruined his career he was not the same in the Justin fight too slow and drained form the double weight cut
