Hey everyone! So this one is my fault but I completely forgot that UFC on ABC Sandhagen vs Nurmagomedov was this weekend and we technically should have done official predictions in this podcast episode, especially since there are some solid fights on that card too. I'm trying to see if Rob can do a separate video later this week but if he can't (which is likely since he's getting root canals done), then I may do a separate predictions on my own. I really do apologize - again, this one is on me. Let me know your thoughts. Jonny

There is a large similarity between how Belal pressured Leon and how Strickland pressured Adesanya. These precision counter strikers cannot cope with a high pressure/high volume fighter.

You’re 100% right, particularly due to the fact that both are so low output, Leon even more so than Izzy. Another thing is that both are uncomfortable boxing in the pocket, Leon more so about the pocket thing, and just simply aren’t very good at boxing range

I think it comes down to Belal developing an AKA/Khabib style grappling system. Leon uses the fence to defend takedowns, and that works on traditional US college wrestlers like Colby and Usman, but Khabib's grappling style specifically uses the fence to get takedowns. It's also worth pointing out that Usman was dominating that second fight until he got caught.
@ciaranmck44693 ай бұрын
Well he did lose the first round but I agree with your first assessment. I think what also surprised leon was just the utter pace, I also seen dj talk about it and he said something along the lines of Leon is a sniper and a sniper needs time to get his shots off. Belal didn't give leon time at all and because leon isn't a great counter puncher he couldn't stop belal's pressure.

15:50 tbf, the number one criteria according to the scoring criteria is effective striking/grappling. It’s a vague term with a big description underneath on the criteria, but they use the word “impact” instead of damage, as impact includes damage, but also diminishing one’s spirit and energy a la a merab performance. They say immediate impact (a cut, a reaction from a strike etc.) should be HEAVILY FAVOURED over cumulative impact, which is where I believe the “damage trumps all” thought comes from, but heavily favoured isn’t as absolute as trumps. Do I give leon the 5th after all that? Probably, because he evidently wasn’t wholly diminished if he reversed the position and went to attempt to end the fight with elbows, which had immediate impact (the cut), but it all depends on how much the judges heavily favour things

Question for Rob: Your career overlaps with the evolution of leg kicks from thigh-targeting kicks to calf kicks. Which is more painful, in your opinion, and which do you prefer to throw more? I’ve heard that calf kicks are safer for the kicker, because if your opponent checks, the check is happening lower down their leg, instead of by their knee
@user-we1sv5ud3h3 ай бұрын
Some good points made in the comments. Just a few other things. Leon doesnt use head or lateral movement which is why he kept getting tagged, Belal from before the bell rang was already ready in the centre of the cage and he was just throwing his hand and jab out there to cross the void even if it wasnt the most powerful

I have to completly disagree - Leon was a disgrace against Colby Covington, and that fight actually was everything i had to see, to know that Belal had him. If Colby had pace and pressure he would have took Leon out of momentum, but he was too nervous and cautios. Belal fought like a dog in there, and Leon don't have that dog in him, when he feels uncomfortable he starts to make alot of mistakes and he don't get to start where he wants
@LB-eh7sr3 ай бұрын
Yeah it’s crazy how a win can just change everyone’s perception of that performance against Colby. It was terrible, Leon was content with barely coasting to decision victory. Low output, never once even close to finishing the fight against a one legged washed Colby.

This pre/post championship Leon talk is silly. He is/was the same fighter. Just like Adesanya, when you put pressure to snipers , you force them to defend instead of setting up their offensive assets. When they defend, they are on the back foot. That sucks the energy out of them because they aren't used to fighting that style. They are used to protecting their striking distance with fakes and overstimulating their opponents. Are you also in the camp that Izzy did not show up vs Strickland? I believe Strickland's style is terrible for Adesanya. Strickland checked Adesanya's leg kicks and did not back up. He would do the same in a rematch. He might get caught with a hook or cross but unless Adesanya knocks him out, Strickland beats him most of the time. Same thing applies to Belal vs Leon.

I would agree that Leon looked much different against Colby than against Belal. But i felt the Usman fights Leon didn't look too too much different to me. Bc Usman was doing the same thing to Leon until head kick, i felt Usman was clearly comfortably up on cards. And also Leon had a timely fence grab against Kamaru that maybe could have had an effect.. And the refs were on point, it seemed Leon was much more conscientious about grabbing fence in spots too. But just imo, idk if that made a difference or no.. Ofc Leon looked better in Usman 3rd fight, but I also feel there may be some age and injury for Usman just imo.. 9:28 exactly

Johnny, it's not "damage" but "effective striking". Effective Striking/Grappling shall be considered the first priority of round assessments. Effective Aggressiveness is a ‘Plan B’ and should not be considered unless the judge does not see ANY advantage in the Effective Striking/Grappling realm. Cage/Ring Control (‘Plan C’) should only be needed when ALL other criteria are 100% even for both competitors. This will be an extremely rare occurrence. Definition of "Effective Striking" Effective Striking/Grappling “Legal blows that have immediate or cumulative impact with the potential to contribute towards the end of the match with the IMMEDIATE weighing in more heavily than the cumulative impact. Successful execution of takedowns, submission attempts, reversals and the achievement of advantageous positions that produce immediate or cumulative impact with the potential to contribute to the end of the match, with the IMMEDIATE weighing more heavily than the cumulative impact.” It shall be noted that a successful takedown is not merely a changing of position, but the establishment of an attack from the use of the takedown. Top and bottom position fighters are assessed more on the impactful/effective result of their actions, more so than their position. This criterion will be the deciding factor in a high majority of decisions when scoring a round. The next two criteria must be treated as a backup and used ONLY when Effective Striking/Grappling is 100% equal for the round. I'd agree that effective striking should be causing damage, there's more nuance that is missed when simply stating "damage trumps everything"

I don't think Leon cutting Belal was anywhere close to ending the fight, if that cut hit standing up that most likely wouldn't even wobble Belal elbows are just sharper. What happened with Costa and Rob could've been a fight ender coz Rob was rocked pretty hard. A cut most of the time is superficial damage.
