She was obviously there to learn and she soaked up his advice. Wonderful improvement over 5 mins. Fantastic teacher!

It seems like she's the only student that could understand what was instructed and didn't care how silly she looked. I think this kind of brilliance is what made it possible for her to improve incredibly in just a few minutes. I also think she understood what a rare chance it was to have Thomas Quasthoff as your teacher, even for a few minutes. Amazing.

I knew he was a wonderful person when I got to hear him years ago in a Kennedy Center recital. He was just becoming world famous at the time, his English was assured (if with one or two "false friends" from German like saying "actual" to mean "current"), and his manner with the audience was so charming you'd have thought he was already at the end of a long career. After a loud ovation for his brief opening number he said, "Please, you act so excited, and we have a bunch of numbers to get through... But thank you!" Later, when he got to a more obscure set of pieces he said, "Tell me, did they give you the translations for these songs in your programs?" We indicated yes, and he said, "Oh, I see. Forgive me, I'll stop talking."

My favorite thing about Quasthoff is that he just tells students the most simplistic way to improve. There’s no “imagine you’re a tree in the wind” crap. Open the vowel. And we heard the result. And he’s also dead pan fun “my many years as a mezzo soprano.”

I wonder wether he was joking or serious...he started singing at 3 years old, so he must have had some years as a mezzo soprano ;-)

They have good teachers, otherwise they wouldn't have gotten there. He is able to notice a few things and point them out. It's possible the teacher already said this but the information didn't get absorbed. Sometimes they need to hear it from a different person or in a different setting.
