Ever been to a corner ball game at a farm auction? Not sure if it is still ever happens but 35 yrs ago when I was a wee lad farm auctions among the plain sects in eastern PA (Amish and Mennonites) were a family affair for all relatives and others. If it was grandpa's retirement auction the daughters and daughter in-laws had the food stand. The teenagers or "rumspringa" got a good corner ball game going in the barn that drew crowds rivaling the actual auction. And us kids, we would bounce at will between Dad and the uncles at the auction, the wild game in the barn, the nearly empty farm house (furniture got sold too) and when we got hungry mom or aunts in the food stand would always hook us up. Wonderful memories.

At the auction it is still fun. But when everything is gone and empty it gets tough. Our neighbor didn't want to go into his empty stable anymore after the cows were gone...

Well, imagine if he passed the whole farm to a family member and then he would have to watch how they would sell everything way bellow theyr value. Interesting comment you made about how the farmer feels @2:50 and I can tell you personally from seeing my dad go through it and while they are all smiles on the outside inside they are crying. I'm not saying something you don't already know but farming isn't a career, its a way of life. It's different too when selling stuff to family. With family you know your work and your legacy will be respected. It's tough even if you think you're ready to sell out. Because that whole time you're asking yourself WTH am I doing.
