The treaty is an important part of our history for both maori and all New Zealanders. We stood together in two world wars and several other international conflicts. Maori and New Zealand cultures are an important part of our uniqueness in the world and we need to accept that and stand together for the future of our children and generations to follow.

It will take 5 minutes to find and read the Treaty Principles Bill. So many people commenting about haven't even bothered to read it. It is written in plain simple English. For example, its last clause says the Treaty shall not be rewritten. All of the marchers and haka performers, they don't seem to have even botheted reading it.
@sarahrose41262 ай бұрын
You should go read the Bill and it's intent. You can Google " The Treaty Principle s Bill " and the organization that is pushing this bill has an entire website devoted to explaining this bill . It seems to me that the real intent of this bill is to take all power away from Maori organizations to ever make decisions for their nation , and place all Maori under the New Zealand governments complete control. This goes against the original Treatys intent which was to treat the Maori as equals in decision making , not as subservient servants to the Crowns decisions. Seymour is using pretty fancy words like , " democracy " and " equality " when talking about this bill, when in fact the intent of this bill is to strip the Maori of those very rights.
@michaelnewzealand18882 ай бұрын
One thing that would be useful is to explain how the bill in any way at all would take away maori culture the language art history or any of those things that you mentioned. The proponents of the bill say that it won't and those who oppose the bills say that it will but I haven't heard any goid argument for why it will. For example why would it affect anyone speaking Te reo? You don't even need to agree with the treaty of waitangi for that to be the case. There are many foreign languages I heard a group of staff at the BP service station today speaking Chinese and we don't have a treaty upholding Mandarin speaking.

The fact is Act are not trying to change the wording of the ToW, or the settlements that have been agreed to since. What they are saying is that we need a national debate about the "principles" of the ToW that we hear so much about, but that are not clearly defined. So lets discuss and define them. TPM and others have no rational argument against this process, hence the name calling and bad behaviour.

It's become obvious now that looking into the Treaty Principles is not a solution to the problem at the moment. We must look at the Treaty Tribunal members themselves and what is coming out of there. This has caused all the division, unbalance and trouble throughout the country. Problem 1, Why are 20 tribunal members allowed to interpret the Treaty the way they want to? Problem 2, about 14 are Maori and are strongly bias towards their own people, this is clearly an injustice for NZ. Problem 3, after solving 1 and 2 then we look into the Principals confusion, foreshore and seabed misinterpretation, the different versions of the document, and all the different interpretation by many people through the years, also all progress and development for eg when the Tribunal was set up about 1975 and the way they interpret it now, it is has clear as MUD, also outdated and not a legal document. The mistake Seymour made is that politicians must never go near it this document is not a political football that you kick around.

The Treaty Principles being a construct of the Waitangi Tribunal and sitting Gov in 1975. The Treaty Principals have never been defined so have been grossly misrepresented and misinterpreted at every turn as to control the narrative and never put at risk the milking of the Tax Paying Citizens of New Zealand. This repugnant rot must end as it holds this country back from reaching its full potential, disincentivizes the achievers in this country who then leave, incentives a portion of our community who only ever put there hand out instead of up and contributing. Why would you want to define the Principles when it wouldn't be in the interests of a portion of our community when they can ride the gravy train and then the rest of us have to pay for it all...Its repugnant and must come to an end. So you're saying that you believe if a civilization is more technologically " advanced " than another race they have a right to invade another country , steal their lands , subjugate the other race to the invaders choice of governance , make a " peace Treaty " giving the other race certain inalienable rights to rule over themselves, but 200 years later , if it's no longer convenient to respect the less technologically " advanced " race , they can shred the original Treaty and tell the Maori they've lost all rights to self governance? Very well spoken Moana. I agree with some of what you said and disagree with some of what you said but if someone like you was in parliament articulating this kind of position it would be a lot better than any of the Maori Party members that I see currently. The point though of having a debate would be someone like you articulating your position and then someone like David Seymour articulating his position and having a back and forth conversation, rebuttals questioning and clarification and so forth that could give some beneficial understanding to people in the general public. And as you well know, the bill will not go past select committee stage and will be struck down at the second reading so there's no way it's going to come into law. That being the case I don't know why the maori party are so upset, they should be rejoicing that national and New Zealand first are not going to support it past the first reading. Also, if your view is correct that gives a great opportunity to inform the public.
