You have A LOT to learn about the defunct NZ police force and legal system IF you truly believe that. NZ has many political prisoners, who's only fault was being the victim of crimes, many committed directly by, in in conspiracy with our constabulary. This is a major part of our domestic violence, and gang, problems....

Amongst my friends, many of which are Maori are model citizens and would wipe the floor with many of us. I'm pakeha and this wonderful group of inspirational Maori people I'm involved with are amazing. I'm struggling with the problem we have in New Zealand and am aware that many have suffered systemic violence within their families however I am a believer that one can learn from their parents mistakes and avoid repeating those mistakes. It's a shame New Zealand has this dire situation but I believe it can and must be turned around. This debate here is just going around in circles. Shane Jones does touch on the crucial issues which honestly need to be resolved. This debate is obviously going nowhere.

I've never been in jail, I've never done time, because I follow the law. That doesn't change the fact that many of the laws we live by today are inherently racist. Maori people have had of 3 million acres of land STOLEN. Land they were cultivating, land that was fertile and prosperous, land that was feeding their families and gaining wealth, STOLEN FROM THEM. Not only STOLEN, but that THEFT was then legislated and that THEFT made LEGAL. Imagine that, if the crown came into your house, kicked you and your family out, told you not to come back or you will be killed and then legislated what they'd just done to make it legal! Thats what happened to Maori! We were robbed of our land, we were robbed of our wealth, robbed of our self determination, robbed of our rights under the law, robbed of our identity - a whole generation who were put through an education system that punished them for speaking their native tongue, forced to change their names to more understandable English names because the immigrants couldn't understand them. We ARE, HAVE BEEN AND ALWAYS WILL BE VICTIMS. Shane Jones believed that before he got his cushy 6 figure salary. He advocated fro Maori rights, he advocated for Maori to resist the Crown, now he's changed his tune. He'll change it back once his contract with the crown is ended. He is a mercenary, just like Winston.

Make no mistake. Shane Jones is a mercenary. He says what the Prime Minister and those above him want him to say. He doesn't believe any of what he's saying, he's saying it because because thats what he's being paid handsomely to say. The correction system is not to blame for the amount of maori's in jail. The correction staff are there to keep the prisoners safe, fed, inside etc. Like other comments, if ya do the crime ya do the time. All those supposed opposition mp's think about is the criminals. What about all the victims of the crimes?! They get treated worse than the criminals.

Your people committed war crimes and you shouldn't even be here. your people destroyed a culture, not long ago either, within my parents life times and long before that. your only the victims of a response your ancestors caused. its even weirder that the Pakeha today use the same excuses they did long ago when they were still doing the same thing. the fact that you cant see the pattern is beyond me, but it would explain why maori were able to outsmart pakeha despite the numbers.

It was a pretty big thing that happened. The myriad of laws, regulations and statutes created by the colonizers only had one desired outcome. To gain control of the land in NZ . Land creates wealth, inability to create wealth often leads to crime.. The colonizers were morally and legally wrong in their efforts to gain land. Europeans did this all over the world. Every westernized country now has disproportionate wealth and income levels between the original inhabitants and the European colonizers. SIMPLY how it is.

It's about time someone said that in parliament. Under the treaty, maoris have a responsibility to behave like good, law abiding citizens. Maoris are "overrepresented" in the prison system because they are not meeting their treaty obligations. They need to stop leveraging their race and bad decisions against the rest of the nation for more resources and more leniency for their bad behaviour.

Spot on Shane Jones. I was a Probation Officer for 20 years - you're spot on. There has been a focus on reducing Maori offending for decades - but nothing changes... the focus absolutely needs to be on the victims. The only people who benefitted from Hokai Rangi were the management - money for sitting in meetings quoting their whakapapa..... the staff got more cultural supervision than the inmates!

They have a victim mentality and blame it on everyone but themselves, don't want to go to jail, DON'T commit crimes. Why haven't the parents raised their children correctly, money will not make them commit less crimes. They need to take responsibility for their own selves, but NO, they blame everyone for their issues. How many of them re-offend, many do, it becomes a life style. Stop making excuses for them, they get so many opportunities in life but piss it up the wall.

My ancestors immigrated to New Zealand with hardly anything, they could barely speak english, their culture was not british, but adapted themselves to make the most of the opportunities this country provides to become fully independent and give themselves a comfortable lifestyle. Many Maori need to stop the argument of colonisation and the crys of victimisation because it just fuels racism.
