I've never been in jail, I've never done time, because I follow the law. That doesn't change the fact that many of the laws we live by today are inherently racist. Maori people have had of 3 million acres of land STOLEN. Land they were cultivating, land that was fertile and prosperous, land that was feeding their families and gaining wealth, STOLEN FROM THEM. Not only STOLEN, but that THEFT was then legislated and that THEFT made LEGAL. Imagine that, if the crown came into your house, kicked you and your family out, told you not to come back or you will be killed and then legislated what they'd just done to make it legal! Thats what happened to Maori! We were robbed of our land, we were robbed of our wealth, robbed of our self determination, robbed of our rights under the law, robbed of our identity - a whole generation who were put through an education system that punished them for speaking their native tongue, forced to change their names to more understandable English names because the immigrants couldn't understand them. We ARE, HAVE BEEN AND ALWAYS WILL BE VICTIMS. Shane Jones believed that before he got his cushy 6 figure salary. @@november50 3 billion dollars later and no change...the maori elites are squandering the money and it's not filtering down to the real need. it is a big fraudulent free ride on the gravy train at everyone else's expense blaming everyone else for the problem but themselves.

It's about time someone said that in parliament. Under the treaty, maoris have a responsibility to behave like good, law abiding citizens. Maoris are "overrepresented" in the prison system because they are not meeting their treaty obligations. They need to stop leveraging their race and bad decisions against the rest of the nation for more resources and more leniency for their bad behaviour.

ssshhhhhh... treaties (inc this one) have only 1 side having obligations apparently.

Spot on Shane Jones. I was a Probation Officer for 20 years - you're spot on. There has been a focus on reducing Maori offending for decades - but nothing changes... the focus absolutely needs to be on the victims. The only people who benefitted from Hokai Rangi were the management - money for sitting in meetings quoting their whakapapa..... the staff got more cultural supervision than the inmates!
@sclark90113 ай бұрын
All this woke emphasis on maori whakapapa but ready to schidt on their very own earopean whakapapa when it suits them and there's a freeride on the gravy train. not they don't reject the coloniser's money and technology and Harleys, kfc, hoodies and free government housing and dole free money....did i mention colonisers money???
@LawdyMay3 ай бұрын
Why does "colonisation" only affect some Maori and not all? Could that be because it's the latest excuse to justify those behaving badly?
@rahowherox11772 ай бұрын
in the same way childhood abuse only effects (in terms of future imprisonment or cyclical abuse) some of the victims and some do good... ie, it effects all, but some can overcome it to the point where you wouldnt know.

Well said! and we have the exact same issue in Australia. What's terrifying is law enforcement are too scared to enforce the law in places like Alice Springs as it will inflate the numbers further, which means its perfectly fine for young Aboriginal kids to smash up the CBD every night and intimidate non-aboriginal people. .

Thank you Mr Jones for speaking up, unfortunately too many others will find that he said offensive but it's the truth. What happened to you as a child is not your fault but as an adult your growth is your responsibility and there is plenty of support out there, opportunity and privilege.
@evelyn21783 ай бұрын
They have a victim mentality and blame it on everyone but themselves, don't want to go to jail, DON'T commit crimes. Why haven't the parents raised their children correctly, money will not make them commit less crimes. They need to take responsibility for their own selves, but NO, they blame everyone for their issues. How many of them re-offend, many do, it becomes a life style. Stop making excuses for them, they get so many opportunities in life but piss it up the wall.

You don’t ‘plan’ a prison population, it’s not meant to be a mirror of society. You don’t go to prison for being a law abiding citizen.

My ancestors immigrated to New Zealand with hardly anything, they could barely speak english, their culture was not british, but adapted themselves to make the most of the opportunities this country provides to become fully independent and give themselves a comfortable lifestyle. Many Maori need to stop the argument of colonisation and the crys of victimisation because it just fuels racism.
@cheeks70502 ай бұрын
Maybe it's the Māori's job to reduce their over representation in prison, rather than the state's.
