Just like her dad, Moana losses someone too. Right before she leaves the island, her grandmother passes away. However, unlike her father, Moana does not let her grandmother’s death instill fear in her/demotivate her. Perhaps this was also apart of the test?

So you're saying the ocean... killed Moana's grandmother... to test Moana's will. Or at least knew Tala was going to die? I somehow doubt it. Also, it's very different because Grandma Tala's death had nothing to do with the ocean, so her dying shouldn't have affected how Moana feels about going beyond the reef, whereas Tui's friend was killed from drowning at sea, actively making him fear the ocean. These two instances are very different, so I just don't see it. And again, I'm pretty sure the ocean didn't plan on Tala dying to test Moana.

It's a bit odd no chosen one ever reached Maui (we know because Maui says he's been stuck there since stealing the heart). Did no one ever pass the test, did they get lost searching for Maui, or did they try to restore the heart without Maui? Navigations skills don't appear particularly important since Moana managed it, so everyone must have failed the test. It's pretty sad 😅

What if Chief Tui’s best friend was the chosen one and he convinced Tui to join him on his journey with his shiny rock. It resulted in his death and that’s why he screams at Moana over the heart because to him it was just a rock that lead to the death of his best friend.

I think they are truly a chosen family. I have long thoughts that grandma Tala, Chief Tui, and Moana we’re all chosen. I think grandma tala is telling the stories to equip the next generation the same way she did for her son who tries to downplay the stories to keep everyone safe. When his friend died, I think he had resolved himself that it could not be done and instead he would just attempt to keep everyone safe by hiding their history and keeping everyone inside the reef.

The journey was going to be rough. Moana didn't take anyone else with her to the reef and so had no one else to lose. Though she did get stuck and could easily have lost her own life.

I agree that the chief's trial was harder, but I also think that killing the chief's best friend was the ocean's way of warning him (and future generations who hear the story) that the journey must be made alone (and animals don't count I guess)

I'm surprised this theory took so long. Me and my last ex came up with this when we watched it the first time. But we don't just think it was Moana and her dad, but just their bloodline in general. It explains why her grandmother knows so much about it too. (Edit) It wasn't even her dad who made the decision to NEVER go past the reef. It explains that even when the dad and friend tried, it was forbidden then. I think every generation was chosen and tried. But once faced with that possiblity of death, backed down, until Moana.

During my rewatches of this movie, I had this thought that Moana had come from a line of people chosen to return the heart of Tafiti. Moana’s grandmother; obviously with her knowledge and connection with the ocean, Tafiti, and Maui, and Moana’s father; who also had an urge to venture onto the ocean much like Moana. This is just speculation, but I think that it was Moana’s ancestors that had some sort of hand in Maui stealing the heart of Tafiti. The ocean may have chosen Moana’s bloodline to be trusted with this task as a redemption of sorts right alongside Maui. Perhaps it is the royal bloodline that caused this? And maybe Moana’s grandfather was even tasked with returning the heart, and then Moana’s grandmother was subsequently involved with it.

I really like this theory. It presents a stronger case on why Moana was chosen. I find that too often we assign too much value to "chosen ones" being the only chosen one, particularly from factors not in their control (like family lines, special abilities, or convenience of opportunity). I've been seeing a bunch of theories floating around that try to address how special Moana was in order to be chosen in the first place, meanwhile this is a nice, fresh take that actually follows one of the subthemes of the movie; You don't have to be something special. You don't have to be Maui of the Hook; you can just be Maui. You don't have to be Moana, chosen of the Ocean; you can just be Moana. And if you choose to, you can do great things.

I absolutely agree with this theory and held this believe since my first rewatch of the movie. What always sold it to me was the sentence "This is just a rock!". My God, I thought, he knows the stone! And then everything clicked into place. I'd even go so far as to say that Tala was chosen before him but couldn't complete the quest and maybe even got injured trying, hence the cane.

I have long had a theory that every chief before Moana has been prompted to take the Heart back to Te Fiti, and only the last three generations (Soba, Tui and Moana) have ever attempted to answer the call (Soba died in the attempt, Tui lost his best friend, and Moana finally succeeded).

Wow this makes so much sense, especially since it was Tala who showed Moana the boats. She was probably the last chief and was also chosen, but failed in some way. She probably encouraged Moana's dad to give up his dream at the time. I think as she got older and wiser, she realized she was wrong, and that someone *had* to go, even if she couldn't anymore. This is why she encouraged Moana so much to go, even though she likely wanted her son to stay on the island when he (Moana's dad) was chosen in the past.

What also supports this theory of the ocean only providing help until you help yourself, Is when hei hei was able to drown in the water the first time Moana had to rescue him almost losing her boat. Every other time after that the ocean saved the chicken and babysat him. The ocean only forcefully kept Maui on the boat when Moana had successfully reached him by herself. And finally the ocean shows the greatest help of parting the waters at the end is when Moana successfully shows the greatest amount of determination in getting to the inner land.

I've theorised before that the chief was chosen before Moana, it made a lot of sense. My question for you today is: Was grandma chosen before her son, and if she was then how/why did she fail in her attempt to return the heart? How far did she get to know so much about the heart? The chosen one status seems to travel along bloodlines after all. And if it's not in grandma's bloodline, then was her husband? How/why did he fail? How far did he get that grandma knows so very much about the specifics of the heart? It's very difficult to learn so much detail about something that's been considered myth for a thousand years at least, especially in such an isolated place where the only knowledge is handed down in a primarily vocal or picture form where words and interpretations are easily lost or obscured (going from what see purely in the movie where there's pictures to help tell stories but nothing in terms of written word)

This is not new. I don't know if they did this one previously, but others have. This was one of the first theories to emerge from fandom. This also explains why grandma realized the significance of the stone and knew she had to save it. It also explains why dad was so set against the idea of a quest to replace the heart.

I always assumed this because the number of rocks that denote the chiefs on the island doesn't make sense if they only started prohibiting people from leaving the island with Moana's father's generation. It shows that people were discouraged from leaving even before that and therefore the scene with Moana's father shows him defying that rule with his friend. I feel like if this weren't the case, then the scene doesn't really add to the story besides showing loss. Disney didn't spell it out here, but I think they did intend for Moana's father to have been the previous person to attempt the feat of restoring the heart.

Hei Hei was supposed to go on the voyage, because he also was a Chosen One, given a calling and an important purpose. Hei Hei was given a compulsion to keep trying to grab rocks in his mouth, because it was going to be important in a future event, which was twice when Hei Hei grabbed the Heart, once swallowing it to try to protect it from the Kakamora and again later grabbing it, to keep it from being swept out to sea, when Moana was trying to evade Te Kā to return the Heart. Moana had the compulsion to go out to sea, not knowing why; and Hei Hei had a compulsion to have absolute focus on nothing but putting rocks in his mouth.

I love how much Encanto has reawaken the Epic messages of Moana! 💃🌺🌴🌺💃 Question: Was Moana the first female chief of her people? And could a male have replaced the stone? I think that it required a female to replace the stone because a male removed it. Specifically because of the trauma of what Maui did and couldn't recognize the entity of his actions. (Reminds me of the scene in Maleficent where her wings are removed! 😡😭😭) If she was the first female leader, that would make sense that all before her were destin to fail. Another point, it took the loss of resources to finally open her father's eyes. This is a mindset Maui also demonstrates when talking about his motivations in his achievemens. (You're welcom) The entire focus is about "I, me and mine first" without understanding how everything is connected and the ability to see past the needful self.
