So about six years ago I bought a little 864 sq ft 2 bed 1 bath prairie ranch house with an attached 624 sq ft garage/shop on a 1/3 acre in a sleepy West Texas town for $11,000. I’ve spent about $17,000 fixing it up so far, and probably another $15,000 to finish it to my plans. I’m 61now and this was exactly what I wanted: a small house with no mortgage or lease payments that I could fix up when I had the money, and just live in debt free when I retire in a few years. It’s not much, but it makes me happy. When I bought it I had just come out of a financial disaster in which I lost all the money that would have been my retirement savings. So I readjusted my expectations and it’s working out pretty much as I planned. God bless you and best wishes.

This came out really well. My wife and I are thinking of doing something like this in the future. We're currently looking for some land in a more rural part of the state. Once the kids are grown and out of the house, we won't need anything approaching the size home we have now. Quite frankly with as much as it costs to do anything now regarding building a home, something like this is the way to go! You've taken the sort of mobile home that gives "trailer parks" a bad name and turned it into a beautiful home. I am quite impressed at what you were able to do with that single wide!

My brother remodeled my 1986 mobile home. He took out the bad parts of the floor then put marine plywood throughout the house. 32 sheets. He rewired and replumbed everything. The insulation had settled so he put in new insulation- higher R value than original. We put new drywall, new toilet, sink and bathtubs in both bathrooms. We checked discount, damaged and retailers for parts. He had some plywood left so he built new shelving in the lower kitchen cabinets. Cabinets are the cheapest built items in a mobile home. It was literally a brand new mobile when he was done. My developmentally challenged sister and I lived there almost 3 years after that. Due to circumstances beyond my control I had to move. The small town where we lived started fining me daily for "abandoned dwelling" d

abandoned dwelling. I tried to sell the mobile, getting down to $2,000 for it. I finally gave it to a young couple with 3 children. They had been left some property. Habitat for humanity is a great organization. I always donate to them when I have something that they can use. I see people on tv and KZbin remodeling and they take a sledgehammer to the cabinets that are perfectly good, and could be a great addition to someone who is on a budget. It makes me feel sad that there is such little regard for something that could be reused and then ends up in the landfill.
