Condolences to the families and Ms. Sarah as well. I was abducted from a shopping center parking lot by a man with a knife, driven to a remote area, tortured and sexually assaulted on 12-26-73 at 20 yrs. old. I was extremely fortunate to survive. As Ms. Sandra experienced the Troopers didn’t believe me either. I was admitted to the hospital for awhile then released. When the detectives drove me around I was finally able to locate the remote area he had taken me to and some people in the house where he had had first parked the vehicle had ID’d the fur from my hood of my coat and his vehicle. The detectives left me alone in their car in the dark while they spoke with the residents. They then returned to the vehicle and one turned to me and said, “We didn’t believe a word you said until we spoke to those people-*we thought you just got in a fight with your boyfriend....* I had no idea at all my credibility was ever in question. My heart was completely shattered. I will never, ever, ever trust or go to the police again for anything. I’d rather die. My assailant was executed years later for the rape and murder of a number of other young women. No, his execution didn’t feel like “Justice” to me at all but hey, I’m just a victim.

I'm sorry to hear your story and I've heard too many like it. There is several cultural problems with police that cause them to be ineffective at best. They are trained to believe everyone is lying and they are also conditioned to not get involved unless they have too. I spent most of my life around law enforcement, including in my immediate family and even the best meaning officers are mostly ineffective at best. Sadly a similar situation is affecting the medical industry, the days of doing the job to help people are over, they don't trust their patients to tell them the truth and believe their stories. If you try to be your own advocate they feel their authority and competence are being questioned. Our society is quickly losing the human elements and compassion. I'm happy you were strong enough to peservere through tragedy and evil, but sad you had to.

From what I remember reading about this case earlier, the farm Sandra was taken to was not abandoned, but rather was owned by a local farmer that one of the brothers worked for. Basically he had taken Sandra to his place of employment. Which is why it was not unusual that he happened to be driving by days later when he was spotted and detained by the police. He worked there.

My parents were buying an acreage rent to own from the Seversons. My mother told me that their daughter was invited go go along with her friends to Gitchie that night. But, she had homework and her parents told her "no." Who knew that having homework may have saved their daughter's life??! The old saying was "I've got the itchy for Gitchie." It was the party place. No park ranger, no closing, no gates. Now it's all blocked off, overgrown, sad, and haunting....

The shelter was built by the CCC in 1934. But there was no caretaker for it , so it started getting wrecked pretty soon after that. It was declared a historic site and there was a movement to restore it about 20 years ago. But it doesn't look like anything ever came out of that.

@@davidvankirk607 Yes. We've got a lot of them in New England. A lot of our beautiful state parks were established by the CCC. Teens - under supervision - worked on creating the parks. The boys were given $5 a month and the rest of the $ was sent to their parents during the Great Depression. A lot of the stone buildings and fireplaces are still used today in the parks.

That type of stone shelter was common in the parks where I grew up in Illinois. They would have timber framed roofs and open wall areas with a fireplace and benches or table inside. Meant for picnics, etc.

My family, as kids, much enjoyed visits in one in Sagamore, Camden Maine. Staying at the Camping part, we'd picnic and hangout in the CCC rustic rock and timber shelter on rainy stretches. Have a campfire in the big fireplace. Put dry seaweed on it: made sounds like popcorn popping as the seaweeds' flotation air bladders popped. Pretended the shelter was a Viking lodge or Pioneer lodge...

That building with the fireplace was the Park Pavillion. It offered a place to gather under a roof, with picnic tables, and you could have a nice fire and warm up the Pavillion. Yes, it was a rock shelter with a fireplace. Gitchee Manitou was an Iowa State Park. My folks and I used go there for nature walks with the dogs. Kids had beer parties there just as they do today. The graffiti is sure colorful, I remember when there was NO grafitti there. I went to school with Mike Hadrath, he lived a block away. I remember his empty seat in speech class at Washington High School. There was no mention of the event by the teachers at the time, certainly NO counselors were present for support.

I grew up in South Dakota about 90 miles from Ritchie Manitou and have family that lived in Rock Rapids at the time. It was rural South Dakota/Iowa, people never thought something like that could happen in that area so the kids had much more freedom than they did in other places.

My town had 3k people, the school district was the largest in the state in terms of land area, but had the fewest students. My graduating class had 72 people in it. Mostly farm kids, of which I was technically one. Lived on a farm, but had horses and hay. Most had dairy cows, angus, or grapes.

I remember the news report about this case. Even though I lived in Illinois, it was national news. I was twelve at the time, almost 13, the same age as the survivor. I was convinced there were men out there with deer rifles who would get an idea to do the same thing and I became afraid. I used to like to go to an out of the way spot with my friends to hang out, but we stopped doing that after hearing about what happened in Iowa. That poor girl has my prayers.

Between the poverty stricken ghettos and the brainless "progressive alternative sexual lifestyle" champions, I'd say it's more prevalent there than rural communities. This place is about 30 minutes from my house and I had no clue of this incident until sandy, her husband, and Sandra came to my town to talk about her story, and I got a signed copy of her book

This was fascinating - I've been watching your videos for years now but the way you retold this story and recreated the scenes had me riveted. I grew up in the country too and remember hanging out in places like this as a teen - no realizing how dangerous they could be. You should definitely do more of these TrueCrime videos.

I remember this. I was in the 5th grade. This happened about 60 miles from my home town in NW Iowa. We traveled to Sioux Falls SD many times as I had many relatives living there. Was big news at the time as these kind of things didn't happen there. The stone structure with the fire place was a covered open shelter for gatherings. Common in that area at many parks.

This is the time the brothers got caught. They obviously did crap like this before. I grew up as a teen in the late 80s early 90s and people used to get away with a lot before cameras, cell phones and dna. I imagine the 60s and 70s were insane with people like these brothers running around.

The fact that THREE brothers automatically went in on this! They'd all recently been in jail, but to think not one of them stopped it? And all three were no strangers to local lawenforcement. Imagine that. I grew up around a few like that, and they managed to stay in trouble long enough to get awarded Indiana's famous 25 to life " habitual criminal" sentence. Maybe it's time we need a habitual criminal death sentence, since these types of MORONS never learn. It's way past time.

I was sick to my stomache by what happened to this girl. Then, of course, the police don't believe it??? Men can be bad, and I mean scary.
