Always great content here, and lots to be learnt. Choosing the 24 frames/second frequency for cinematograph creation, in the late 1920s, was more of a sound-related matter. The former cadence (16 fps) was not fast enough to allow for reproduction of the higher sound frequencies (above 10000 Hz or so), and something had to be done. Then, sound was (for some film-strips) recorded via an optic track on their right-side near the punched holes. And the faster the film is driven the better image and sound are synchronized (16 fps was kind of slow), and you also can record more (sound) informations during a given period. It was also hard for a camera operator to maintain a steady 16 fps pace throughout, and going up to 24 fps gave them some more room to reach a better accuracy as they were rotating the handle manually. Let's always remember the brothers Auguste and Louis Lumière, engineers and co-inventors of the "cinématographe Lumière". As a twist of words, "lumière" [lu-mee-err'] means "light" in French, which couldn't be more appropriate ! And let's not forget the man who seeded the idea : Etienne-Jules Marey, inventor of the "kinétoscope" (litteraly, observer-of-the-movement). He wanted to study the movement of animals, whether birds, horses, dogs, humans, and found a way to record sequences of photographs. He didn't go further, as his machine was sufficient for giving him a precise view of how movement was created by leaving creatures. But it really was the ancestor of the "cinématographe" in all its aspects, machinery, processes. All these genuises must be remembered, even in our digital ages. Without them...

Well done! The film grain example you said you downloaded looks like "real" film grain. The problem I've had with just about every digital film grain is that it's only black and white. That's fine for emulating B&W motion picture film, but it doesn't work for emulating color motion picture film. Why? Because the three layers of color film grains contain color, once it has been developed. The same thing happens when the projection print is made. If you stood a few feet from a cinema screen when the film was project onto it, you'd see a jumble of grains, in yellow, cyan, and magenta, not black and white.

I'm using Filmic Pro (24fps - 4k) I was doing a close-up with a macro lens, but then when I watch the image in the computer, it looks than every shoot I took (24fps) seems to be quite cut, the movement is not smooth, it looks like it was shots within a lot of shots... it looks like robotic. I don't know if its the lens, if its my movement with the camera, maybe you can help me :) Thank you !!

Many of these "qualities" pertains to the love some have for film photography too. I try to explain to them that some of that doesn't come from just applying a filter. Go out and buy an old film lens and adapter and you'll get some of these qualities right out of the box.

Hi, friend. I like to record videos with my LG-V30 Smartphone which is fantastic, even if it is from the year 2017, it has a fully manual video recording application out of the box, it even records in LOG mode. However, the LOG mode is only for the main camera, the wide angle does not have a LOG mode. That is why I am interested in recording with Filmic. My problem is that being a Variable FPS recording, the result is bad with Filmic, with a maximum that can be 25 and a minimum of 6, this makes the playback look jerky. This does not happen to me with the native application of my Smartphone. Does this happen to you too? Any suggestions. Thanks.

Simon, would you consider reviewing the upcoming Xperia Pro-I after it comes out? Seeing as how your channel is all about making movies with smartphones I'd be very interesting in seeing what your thoughts are on this new Xperia Pro-I coming out. The Xperia line has been promoted has being made for those serious about videography and photography and this upcoming Pro-I model especially so. I know that you've focused on Samsung and the iPhone but is there any chance of you extending that great analysis and insight over to the new Xperia? Thanks for your videos! 😃

I would love to but if I don't get sent these things for free, it's quite an investment. You don't get extra information, you just get 6 extra frames (that you don't want). You will cause yourself frame rate issues. Which 6 frames will you remove to go from 30 to 24? You can't do it without causing loss in smoothness.
