The vinyl reissue of 'Play' is available to pre-order now: moby.la/playand...
Music: 'South Side' by Moby, from his 1999 studio album 'Play'.
Director: Joseph Kahn
More from Moby:

/ mobymusic
/ thelittleidiot
the 'southside' video is supposed to be an over the top, extreme quasi-parody of your standard hip-hop video. it's supposed to be ironic, me in a bentley with champagne and models. i'm a skinny little white kid, the irony is supposed to be that in the video i'm a fake-fur clad, gold tooth wearing, debauched rock star.
i mean, me break dancing? i think it's funny...oh well.

@@danielbenavides3337 The story is a tad different. He actually liked her vocal, but couldn't come up with a decent mix of it on his own. So it was kept off the initial album release until a friend of his came up with a mix he was satisfied with. Here is a quote from a "Play" retrospective Moby did with Rolling Stone on its 10th anniversary... "Gwen Stefani came into the studio while I was recording Play. And this was when the first No Doubt record was doing really well. So I couldn't figure out why she'd want to go into the studio with me. She was a big rock star and I was a has-been. She came into the studio, she recorded the vocals and she did a great job. But my mixing skills are limited. I couldn't get a mix with her vocals that worked. I tried and I tried. So the first album version didn't have her vocals on it. I went back to it a year later and handed it off to a friend who was a good mixer, and he was able to actually do a mix with her vocals that worked. So, that's why there's two versions."

I remember we visited California from the UK in May 2001 and my late father purchased this album on CD for our car rental. I remember it was so "appropriate" driving around LA and this playing and up to our drive to San Francisco by the coastal road. Later on it used to remind me of m now wife in a snowy Chicago driving around in a car with her friends. Compared to now, the 2000's seemed so much better.

Some songs in the 90s especially rock songs didn't have a physical single...therefore is not eligible to chart. A good example is Don't Speak. It was number 1 in airplay for 16 weeks but didn't chart because it was never a commercial single. The artist wanted people to buy the album. Nowadays...a major artists releases an album and all the songs chart no matter if they're a single or not. And artists know the game they'll release an album with 20 songs or more. Drake is one who plays the game.

1. Southside is one of my favorite songs. It has a perfect beat, it's in a lively major key, great vocals, not overly complex message ~~ I'm bored but would rather be out with my friends partying/dodging danger. I think I once called it "a perfect song." 2. The fact that you incorporate cardinal directions into the lyrics in different, progressive phases appeals to my OCD. 3. I love the fact that you're fighting your gold tooth the whole time. Thanks Moby!

Lyrics See myself in the pouring home See the light come over now See myself in the pouring rain I watch hope come over me Here we are now going to the east side I pick up my friends and we start to ride Ride all night we ride all day Some may come and some may stay Here we are in the pouring home I watch the light man fall the comb I watch a light move across the screen I watch the light come over me Here we are now going to the west side Weapons in hand as we go for a ride Some may come and some may stay Watching out for a sunny day where there's Love and darkness and my sidearm Hey, elan Here we are now going to the north side I look at my friends as they start to ride Ride at night we ride all day Looking out for a sunny day Here we are now going to the south side I pick up my friends and we hope we won't die Ride at night, ride through heaven and hell Come back and feel so well

Thing is, listening to it now, it hits a lot harder after current events come up. “Here we are now going Southside. I think of my friends and we hope we won’t die.” The chorus paints a perspective of going out and hoping nothing bad happens. Honestly, I loved this song then, love it more now.
