Habitat Hints: Bush Honeysuckle

Most of the honeysuckle control measures I see discussed are only practical on a small scale. Too labor intensive for large properties with serious infestation. I’d like to see more info of the equipment and manpower needed to control on large scale (hundreds of acres). Forestry mulchers, grapples, heavy duty rotary cutters etc…

Currently whittling away at a pretty large stand of bush honeysuckle. I found a really good way to treat the stump with chemical without making a mess. get a bingo dauber, dump 3/4 of the dye out, pour the concentrate chemical into the dauber....shake it up. now you treat the stump and mark which stumps you've treated. I like the red dye best. Squeeze the bottle a bit as you daub to release a bit more per strike. works great on big and little ones.... the bottle is generally high-vis, so you don't lose it. the release mechanism keeps dye in, so you can keep it in your pocket as you are in there cutting.

You sure that’s a honeysuckle and not an autumn olive? The video was really fuzzy and heparin for me to tell. Apparently autumn olive is also invasive in MO, but at least you can eat those berries. Can giant ragweed be used to knock back and control bush honeysuckle? The reason I ask is because that's what I used to control the growth of Bush honeysuckle around my porch this year and it worked great. The obvious trade off is that giant ragweed is a sometimes major pollination irritation. Giant ragweed oil was used as a medicinal by native Americans. Harvest in late Sept or early October. The honey suckle vines crawl up the ragweed which dies and can be cut off at the base and pulled out. You may need to recut the ragweed stumps to avoid a pungee stick effect . Some of those ragweed stumps are sturdy and razor sharp. Be careful. Long sleeves respirator gloves eye protection. These plants came to play. Personally I like them both. Ragweed and various honeysuckle remind me of my childhood in richee rich land. Money honey. Coffee and beans. Tabasco hotsauce is comin' for me.

Why doesn't MDC control the Bush Honeysuckle on the lands MDC maintain? So many places are overgrown with this plant.

Likely due to limitations in manpower, equipment and finances.
